There aren't many 'market' vegetables that love the Florida summer heat and humidity. But that doesn't mean there isn't food to be grown! Every yard, at any time, can be an edible yard.
Okra, peanuts, sweet potatoes, moringa, cassava, chaya, longevity and okinawa spinaches, cow peas, butterbeans, garlic chive, sugar cane and many more, aren't adverse to the Florida summer environment.
All those listed and and then some, are tucked in throughout our garden and chicken yard in North Florida.
This year, we expanded our row garden system (back to the roots), as we found it impossible to grow cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, etc. within the permaculture system.
Our row gardens are abandoned after every season, so the soil can regenerate. This also eliminates the nematodes getting out of control, attacking our corps.
When we started out we had nothing but large pecan trees with grass underneath. Now, almost 8 years later, it's an edible 'jungle' paradise with annual and perennial food and pollinator plants scattered throughout. I mention a lot of them in the video, but of course forgot to mention a whole lot as well. :)
To witness the return of an eco-system (albeit on a small scale) is mind blowing and immensely satisfying. So many birds! Skinks, toads, lizards, butterflies, but especially the enormous variety of insects we now have.
We still battle stink bugs (for lack of natural predators), and the occasional surge of army worms. But due to the increase of nesting birds, the army worms seem under control most of the time.
Happy growing! :)

So pretty. I had a food forest in North Florida! Jacksonville. It was so lovely. I'm in the appalachian mountains homesteading now. I miss the tropical food forest plants.

Oh, Jax is a nice place to grow you could even do bananas for lack of hard freezes. What plants are you missing? First thing I would plant in the Appalachians are raspberries. And lots of apple trees.

I just happened to find your video by accident and I am absolutely fascinated with how you have your property set up with your garden. I just love it. I hope you do another video this year of your success or failures so that I can learn from you I have two acres of land and I would really like to do the same style of gardening on my property that you do so I'm looking forward and hoping you do another video thank you so much for sharing your garden with me.

Aww, thank you for your nice comment. It's a permaculture 'garden' with raised beds for annuals. 2 acres are a lot of land to grow beautiful things. Best to join a local permaculture or gardening group to get ides of WHAT will grow with ease, especially perennial fruit trees and shrubs. Local extension offices are great help as well. Fair warning: Once you get started, it's hard to stop. :)

Beautiful food forest! Great job! I'm in Niceville, FL and the cold snap this year, down to 18, really did some damage to us. Sorry to see your Satsuma didn't make it. I love ours, it did really well last year. That's really cool about the Anna apple. We've been thinking about an apple and were going to go with Gala or Fuji, but the chill hours are a little high. Everyone told us that apples need another pollinator, so it was cool to see that yours is producing without one. We may try going with Anna, even though we don't know what it tastes like. BTW, I've read that Flordacrest is the top recommended peach for North Florida, so you may want to check into that. We just got one this year to try out.
@homesteadinginnorthflorida
@homesteadinginnorthflorida Год назад
It really was an odd winter. We had it much colder up here, before, just not 5 nights in a row. That took a toll. I was determined to give this Ana apple a pollinator. Had ought Dorsett years ago, sadly it didn't make it. Turns out it wasn't even needed. But would be interesting to see if there is a yield increase with a pollinator. Thanks for the peach tip. FLKing is definitely a bust. I'll keep my eyes open for a Flordacrest. 🙂

@@homesteadinginnorthflorida we have bananas, moringa, ginger, turmeric, hamlin oranges, grapefruit, meyer lemon, guava, blueberries, mulberries, avocado, loquat, kumquat, tomatoes, peppers, mint, oregano & rosemary. Sounds wonderful, eh? NOT SO FAST because nothing but the herbs have produced anything in the last two years. 😭

@@ittybiddyfarm oh no, that's a bummer. Are the citrus still small? Any other reason nothing produces? That gotta be frustrating. I hope it turns around for you quickly.

did you need a permit to build your homestead? and did you build it yourself or is a licensed builder mandetory? we have land in okeechobee 1.5 acres. wanting to build something.
@homesteadinginnorthflorida
@homesteadinginnorthflorida 12 дней назад
Our home is a 1908 farm house. :) But yes, if we were to built today, even a garage, permits would be needed. You should contact your local building department (things change based on county/city), and they will give you a permit application that will state everything they need before you can break ground. Despite us being very rural up here, it's not even allowed to live permanently in a camper.
