Marshall Plexi in a pedal! Carl Martin Plexi Tone Overdrive and distortion pedal with a Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty and an Orange OR80 Half Stack.
We’ve gotta get this channel up to 100k! I remember how pumped I was when I first found your channel years ago. A true diamond in the rough of RU-vid. You’ve answered soo many questions I’ve had throughout the years. Especially in regards to finding what amp and speaker I’m looking for at particular times. You’ve quelled my curiosity many times and saved me money. Your videos are priceless to me and have helped me find the sound that I’m looking for while also dispelling any preconceived notions I might’ve had toward certain products. What you do means soo much to many of us in the guitar community and I just wanted to let you know how much you are appreciated. Thank you Mr. Segeborn.
For me this is without a doubt the best "plexi" pedal. I´ve tried many but I always come back to this one! Everybody talks about Wamplers and all the american companies when the business is "marshall plexis" but this Carl Martin is a gem!! I adore this pedal!!! I used to play it through a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 and I had a magnificent rock sound !! Fat, authentic, lots of sustain, ballsy, what a tone. Sometimes at night I dream with this pedal...
Thanks Johan for an excellent product demo showing us exactly what the pedal can do and all the varied settings, a good quick review of a product with no talking apart from your introduction and showed us the exact features quickly & professionally and it wasn’t all about how well you can play! Nice Amp rig you behind you, Amp heaven!! A guitarists dream room!! You’ve just convinced me to go and buy one after a few months deciding, you’re demo video got me & persuaded me to invest. Thanks again Steve 👏🏻👏😄
Hey man, well done on 50000 subs. You are one of the most underrated channels on RU-vid, and you deserve to have ten times that amount. Love your work mate....
Wow that Orange has such a HEAVY sound with the right pedal! I think you cracked the code for me on why I couldn't get the band Boris tone I heard on some of their LPs.
I had this and quattro at the same time. the distortion/overdrive didn't sound as good as the plexitone. the analogue echo was good but not worth keeping for that. compressor decent but not tweekable. still if i could only have one pedal it'd be either captain coconut 2 or quattro.
Tip... if you don't like the clip on tuner on the guitar headstock use it on the amp handle , you will be able to tune the guitar through the amp...Cheers from Baires... I'm a loyal follower of all your insights , thanks for your time doing loaded videos with sounds and related things...
Another great video Johan - nothing new there haha. Consistently good mate 👏👏👏. Btw have you tried the Harley Benton British Truetone pedal? Marshall in a pedal also.
Very cool ...shines with either or Hi or Low but seem to struggle to balance both - few strange harmonics, but got a great bite...nailing the sweet spot would be well worth the time - great tones as always Johan
Hello, Johan! "Carl Martin" is my favorite company, but "Korg" doing the work not bad too. Realy "Plexi-sound" with some Orange pepper inside!:-) C.U., thank you for the nice presentation! Zigfrid
When you have boost all the way up and drive all down most time, I think, that most of the sound we hear is from the Orange, because the boost knob realy cranks the amp up from my experience. Is the pedal able to get good sound at lower volumes using the drive knobs as well? And I love your playing btw, i could listen to it all day long. Thanks! :)
Im using this pedal on my Vox ac15c1x and I tottaly agree. I have that boost knob crancked and then adjusting another knobs. Getting much better results.
Thanks for showing some Orange love. Pedal sounds great through this rig. Would you be able to demo a reverb unit through the Orange's send/return? Maybe an older Fender unit or the like to keep the vintage feel. Interested in hearing that potential. Cheers.
I'm using a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret into the front of my Plexi reissue and have a fabulous time getting legendary iconic woody coolness. Cheers!
It is great! I owned the same plug attached model. The power cord wore out and like a dummy, I sold it. I bought the small compact version that just is a single channel, no boost and it wasn’t the same. I definitely would own another If I didn’t use a high gain Marshall.
Are those specially made shoes designed to withstand the stomping you do in your recording sessions? They must be quite durable, at least the left shoe! I've never heard this pedal before but it's got my feet stomping just like yours!
Hi very interesting, I would like to get one if these plexi pedals in front of my Origin 50H in order to get a pkexi tone at human volumes. There are also italian pedals Formula B super plexi, and Nabla 1987 seems they are preatty good too... regards.
Rockett Animal is great also, it models 68 plexi sounds. I have one and clone of this plexitone and love them both. Very good pedals if someone needs old plexi sounds, these are good also at low volume at home. With strat plexitone is very nice! You should do one video With strat also.
I tried the Radial Tonebone Plexitone pedal, but I did not care for it much. The distortion I was getting with an Ibanez Tube Screamer TS9DX mixed with my amps (Peavey VTX Classic) built in distortion was much fuller in tone.
Johan, I have a Radial Tonebone Hot British pedal with a 12ax7 tube in it. I think it may be even better than the Carl Martin plexi pedal. Have you tried the Hot British pedal with a real tube in it?
I think the hot rod Deluxe has a Celestion A type speaker in it which is American sounding. If you put a Vintage 30 in it, it will get a more British tone, especially with this or similar pedals. Cheers
I was mesmerized by the vibrations on the pedal in the corner as you played....LOL.. I'd like to hear this pedal through a cleaner amp to see what it can do. Playing it through the Orange was really nice, but the Orange kinda gets it there on its own, then shaped by the pedal....I'd like to see if it can get close to a Plexi on something with less. Maybe a Fender or Hiwatt ?
Yeah, just by pushing the front of the Orange a lot of the gain comes from it. I’ll see if we can find a clean, high headroom amp too for future work. Cheers
Yes. I have a really old 5F6A Fender Bassman. It shares some similarity with the JTM45 build spec but takes a LOT of volume to get any drive out of it. I'd be interested to see if this would get me to the plexi tone in a way I can play in clubs.
Yeah, thats what I always wonder about pedals...they are trying to get you to a tone you want, but some times, depending on the amp you have, that isnt really always a possibility. Going from a pretty nicely "gained" amp, through a plexi pedal may work really well, but if all you have is a very clean, headroom amp, like a fender or a Hiwatt, it may not get you that plexi tone, but something else. Might not be a BAD tone, but maybe not plexi like its being sold as....as most of us know...not all pedals play well with all amps and vise versa..This vid was good because if your searching for that golden plexi tone, chances are your going to also be dealing with an amp thats closer to that tone then say a Hiwatt. Just needs a touch of something to get it there...Lets face it, I didnt by my Hiwatts to play plexi, and I didnt by my Marshall to play Hiwatt...};-} But its fun as hell to try....LOL
I have one and use it with a Hiwatt DR-103. Glorious. The PlexiTone was actually designed by a guy who went by either "Rid" or "Vasshu the humanoid typhoon" over on the Seymourduncan forum using a 200w Hiwatt as the testbed. He said it was specifically voiced to sound as accurate as possible on the Hiwatt. Here's the link to the discussion thread: www.seymourduncan.com/forum/showthread.php?71953-Carl-Martin-Plexitone
Johan Segeborn please do it ASAP. It really is a plexi machine, it actually have a real plexiglass and the same channel configuration. You can control the normal channel and the high treeble channel gain and balance the overdrive sound. Great RU-vid channel, cheers from Brazil
It sounds awesome but could you maybe switch to an SD1 or TS9 etc during the demo so we can hear how the rig sounds with a commonly used drive pedal. Not a criticism, just an idea. Thanks for all the great demos.
The Carl Martin pedal is good but I think that the Blackstar HT-dual is better at getting the plexi sound. But i need your ears (or what is left of them) to be sure. It also has an ISF control that can be used to get an American or British sound. It is not an uncommon pedal so you should be able to borrow one from somewhere.
G'day Johan, I have been wondering this since I have seen yer first video. Ur a lucky guy to be able to play through all that gear + the volume you can play it on. My downstairs neighbour sometimes (literally) comes knocking @ my door when I'm just walking around my appartment :') thus I'm in a headphones prison atm.
i wanna see you play a goldtop into that marshall wall, while it is standing on the balcony. you wear nothing but the les paul. we need some mics placed around the city, to see how far we can get the sound to travel. lol. congratulations anyways :D
it's a good pedal, i had one for 4 years but i sold it because it only works well with amps with very pronounced midrange. It's pretty useless with Fender style amps, the V shape eq of the amp doesn't help to get good distortion with the plexitone. Only with my Mesa Nomad it sounded good ( with my Princeton and with my Soldano it was orrible ).it deserves a 3 band eq plus a presence knob, also it's too big and the power cable is a pain in the a%%.... In my opinion the GURUS doubledecker or the Zvex Box of rock ( incredible dynamics ant tone shaping ) are way better. Anyway beatifull demo as always
