Maybe the Most Dangerous Hike in the World

We've done a lot of hikes, but this one may be the most dangerous hike in the world when it comes to day hikes we've done. The Hardergrat in Switzerland is similar to the Brienzergrat and Brienzersee, though it's a ridge line hike; one of the most dangerous hikes in the world with 25 KM of ascents and descents and death memorials along the way.
The route will take you about 10 hours, and we recommend you climb from Brienz towards Interlaken. This will result in a nice chill forest walk at the end; you'll just need to take the coal powered steam train up the ridge and buy a funicular ticket down near Interlaken.
It's an amazing day hike, take lots of water and food, and be ready to have a fantastic time.

*EVERYONE SEEMS TO THINK WE SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS HIKE BECAUSE IT WAS A BIT DANGEROUS. WE'VE DONE SOME OTHER DANGEROUS THINGS, LIKE THIS VIDEO WHEN A GORILLA GRABBED ME IN THE JUNGLE* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oh3wFdhQA3I.html

When doing a 'dangerous' hike, 99% of the time you will be fine even if you have very little experience (like you guys). The difference between life and death comes down to those times where you get unlucky because a rock is unstable or because an ibex comes out of no where and you get surprised etc. Experienced hikers can react better in those type of situations. Yes you may think 'we are military...' but my uncle was in the Swiss military for 25 years and did over 1000 hikes... yet he was one of these memorials on this hike because a large rock lost its grip on the mountain. So saying if you can walk one foot and that time ('most of us have done this for many years') is just extremely ignorant. You guys made it out of luck (as would over 99% of inexperienced hikers). But this Video gives makes it look like anyone could do this hike safely... and thats a very bad message to send!

@@mattfreind7020 I have to agree with you. I've done alot of hikes around that area and I gladly admit that I bugged out for the last climb to the summit of Augstmatthorn from the Harder Kulm direction and took the lower level path as my knee was starting to play up and thought better of it. That is not a hike for the un-prepared.

Well, honestly dude, it's your life, but going into dangerous trails unprepared just really isn't a good idea. I think you know that. It's always good to keep in mind that even if you are okay with putting yourself at risk, if something happens, you are putting local rescue teams into service (and sometimes also danger.) That said, I know of a number of hikes that appear to be significantly more dangerous that what you've shown here. (No, I don't know this particular trail you've taken.) Glad it went well and you had a good time.

As a Swiss, having been hiking for 40 years also in the US, I can just say that Swiss mountain hike trails are a completely different thing than in the US. There are three types of trails in Switzerland: - Plain yellow indicators are for ordinary hiking trails, no special requirements needed here. -Yellow indicators with white-red-white markings. These are mountain hiking trails (like the Hardergrat) they generally require good fitness, good hiking boots (covering your ankles), very grippy sole and you should be free of vertigo. These trails are maintained but not paved. They usually have some help (e.g. steel cable or stairs) where you need to climb. - Light blue indicators with white-blue-white markings. They require very good fitness, very good understanding of the dangers in the mountains, climbing skills, pickaxe, rope, crampons, compass etc. Hands off these ones! These are not for hikers but for experienced mountain goers and will lead you almost 100% to potentially very dangerous terrain, e.g. climbing sections, falling rocks and glacier crossings. For inexperienced people they are really dangerous and an absolute no go! The Hardergrat is a mountain hiking trail on the really difficult side (T5, T1-T3 are o.k. for most mountain hikers, T5 is really for experienced mountain hikers and there is only one level above, T6) of the spectrum, because as you said it really requires that you are free of vertigo and there is no maintained trail in some sections. Also you said something very important, check the weather carefully and don't do it after days with heavy rain, when it is slippery. It is very long too, so bring enough water! You might need 3-4 liters per person on a hot summer day. Now, the direction you took from the Brienzerrothorn 'down' to Harderkulm-Interlaken is the 'easy' direction with some 1100 m ascent and 2500 m descent (to Interlaken, 2000 to Harderkulm). But the easy here, is already very demanding, you really should be fit. 1100 m of ascent is quite o.k. but if you are not fit and exhausted you are insecure in the descent and 2500 m is a lot to walk down, this is very exhausting too. The 'fun' way to do it is from Interlaken to the Brienzerrothorn, with 2500 m of ascent. It is a real beast and you need to start really early in the morning 5-6 am. 'Dangerous' is a relative term, but indeed the Hardergrat is difficult and can be deceiving and requires really some preparation. Although its direction is generally down there is a fair amount of ascent and the difficult parts are in the middle of the trail, where you have no choice but to continue, because going back is not an option as you need to ascent rally a lot. You did a really good job on showing the beauty of the Swiss mountain hikes, but also pointing out the challenge some trails can pose. Remember, in Switzerland you are self-responsible and the fact that there is a sign post doesn't mean it will be easy and fail-save to use. A good thing is to check the T rating for the hike you plan, which goes from T1 to T6. With T1-T2 you will be o.k. if you have some hiking experience. T5-T6 level really is for very fit people knowing what they are doing in the mountains.

I mostly agree but T4 is also possible for hikers. T4 doesn't require rope work or glacier equipment.

Hi guys! I've lived in Switzerland since 5 years and I must tell you something. Swiss hikes descriptions can be misleading. Whenever the hike is marked as "easy", beware, as it is not so easy. With "medium" it becomes quite tough for normal people. What I mean by 'normal people' is people who have a good level of fitness, no overweight. Foreigners who come here for hiking have no clue that the trails are more difficult than their description. The Swiss, as a nation, are very, very sporty. What can be for you a 'medium hike' can be a 'Sunday stroll' for the Swiss.

Americans generally have a lower fitness level than most europeans, even the soldiers. My brother was stationed in Afghanistan with US troops and when they had to hike up a mountain, the americans arrived 15 minutes later despite starting at the same time ...

I also ended up to this video, since I'm planning this trip next summer. But what you're saying, although maybe it's true, it's not related to this specific case IMO. For what I've learned brienzergrat is considered a T5 hike. Quite the opposite of an easy hike. So in this case the problem is not the difficulty assigned to the hike, but the people who don't have a clue of how to inform themselves before going in the mountains

Despite unprepared and a little bit naive, you managed to do what not everybody is able to. I really liked to see the „decay“ in your face over the course of the hike. The same happened to me on the Harder Trail. This hike is physiologically and psychologically extremely demanding. But you did it - no injuries. No losses. A beer at the end. So my final conclusion: you are very well trained and good sportsmen, -women) with a lot of self reflection. I guess you will have learned something from it. And all of you got a live lasting memory of an remarkable day. So - erverything perfect! Chapeau!

Reflecting on my life-changing run on the Hardergrat back in August: BE PREPARED this trail is intense and should not be treated lightly. Being my last week in Switzerland, I woke up that August morning and decided to try running this trail ( have background in XC and run 30-40 miles a week). Learned very quick that trail running this route is nothing close to XC. A quick story of my dumb mistakes hopefully will help future runners: I figured I could test this venture alone and with only 2L of water. Needless to say I ended up 13km in at Augstmatthorn with no water left and cramps building fast: not a good situation to be in while alone and with no water stations nearby. The cramps worsened into unbearable pain in my quads that prevented me from standing at all and I actually ended up sitting on the side of the trail unable to move. After waiting a good hour, I realized there was no way I would be able to stand without water (and for sure not make it to Brienz for the last car down the mountain). So I waited and a miracle emerged over the next ridge as Alex and his running group headed towards me. Supplying me generously with a salt pill, ample water, and food, these guys saved my life potentially and I will always remember their generosity. Lesson for anyone reading: Do not underestimate the trail like I did. Bring more than enough water and travel with someone else. I felt quite panicked when dehydration kicked in at Augstmatthorn and I was stuck on top of the trail until another group happened to pass by. With no phone, I would have spent the night there given my situation. Regarding getting back to my home (which was Zurich at the time): after regaining my strength from the generous gifts, it was now close to 5pm. With no hope of reaching Brienz for the last car, I felt quite lost without a cellphone map. So I took a route to the left off the Hardergrat down into a valley (opposite side of Interlaken lake) with some beautiful Swiss farmland, hoping to reach a road and maybe a bus stop. While it was quite peaceful, I was certainly lost at this point and only had the grazing cows to keep me company. I spent close to 2 hours wondering in farmland and then on roads before reaching a large guest house for help, which was to the amusement of the locals sitting on the front porch who probably thought I looked ridiculous covered in dirt/sweat/ and telling them I came from hiking 20 km away in Interlaken. They kindly instructed me to a bus stop at Kemmeriboden, which was another hour walk. For the final stretch of this journey, I found myself looking back up to the Augstmatthorn point on the Hardergrat trail (now 8km away) and realizing how beautiful this country truly is. Passing stunning waterfalls and quaint wooden sculptures along the trail I hiked towards the bus stop, I was thoroughly exhausted and hoping to make the 830 bus. Luckily made it in time and couldn't believe how far I was from the start at Harder Kulm. In summary: this trail is gorgeous and worth seeing, but if you are not an expert trail runner I would not recommend trying your luck runming without extreme care and prep. This trail offers some very sketchy climbing points and virtually no water refill stations. Thus, having enough resources and proper gear is a must. Overall, I loved the journey nonetheless and greatly appreciated the Swiss trail running community and local people living near Interlaken. I hope to return someday to show my family this trail and the secret waterfalls of the Emme creek.

Saying "We know about it, we know what it is called and we know it's a hike, so our group is going and that's how we do things" when asked if you know about the dangers of the hike, while clearly having no clue about the dangers of the hike and not even knowing how long it will take (!) is pretty outrageous to me.

I can relate so much to your experience. I tried a few years back and failed, then went back this summer and completed it in around 10hrs. Ran out of water near Augstmatthorn with about 2.5hrs to go. Had to run the last few KM to get down before the last funicular at Harder Klum. It looks deceptively straightforward, but the constant ups and downs, scrambling sections and narrowness make it utterly physically and mentally exhausting. My muscles kept cramping on the last few peaks....But It has to be done at least once in a lifetime. :-)

A few weeks back, a friend and I hiked along the Hardergrat, a very exposed mountain ridge running 30 km roughly between Interlaken and Brienz, above the lake of the same name. Much of the path is right on the crest of the ridge, sometimes with steep slopes or cliffs directly on either side of the narrow path - it certainly is not for the faint-hearted. Coming off one of the many peaks on the way, I heard a piercing scream. I thought that either some kids were joking around or that someone had panic. Once we climbed down a bit further, we saw a young woman screaming and shaking and immediately went to console her. We quickly understood that her father had slipped and had fallen off the ridge, we could only spot his jacket. The helicopter rescue arrived within 5 minutes of being called, to their credit, but could only find a corpse. They took care of the poor girl and we were left with our sadness for her, her anguished screams haunting us. The rest of the hike was uneventful, but we took special care as the conditions were not ideal due to the previous days’ rain having slickened the paths. I will come again, but will only do so in dry and sunny weather, with friends that are sure-footed.

The Brienzergrat is always a brilliant experience. As a skyrunner, I enjoy both the challenging trails and the unique view. Here are a few tips for all those who dare to take on the challenge: - you need a very good physical condition - take at least 4 liters of water with you - the way from the Brienzer-Rothorn to the Harder is easier than the reverse route - do not go on the route on rainy days or when it has been raining the days before - ask about the exit variants - look for a guide if you are inexperienced - enjoy it!

For anyone wanting to do this trail. Route: The way they did it, is the easiest variant. From Brienzer Rothorn -> Harderkulm. Endurance: You need to be used to hiking all day. I would assume the hike to take 10h for the average hiker who attempts this. Start as early as possible. Distance: 22k 1400m up 2300m down. If you don't know what this means, don't try. Add 2h to your expected time for technical difficulties. Water: Yes depending on the weather and time of year you might need 3l of water (and you will be thirsty at the end). As he said there is no shade for almost the entire hike.l Orientation: There are countless emergency exits. Get a proper Swiss Map. map.geo.admin.ch. Any app containing the same data (there are several for free). Download (for offline use) or print the relevant area. Weather: You absolutely don't want to do this hike in wet conditions or when there is a thunderstorm or snow. Check the weather forecast. Difficulty: This hike is rated T5. If at all possible I would recommend doing a T4 hike as preparation. Most blue trails on the swiss map are T4. You should be familiar with the concept "if you make one mistake you fall". Crux: The crux is on the ascent to Tannhorn. Be ready to turn back / go down if you get into too much difficulty or the weather turns. I do this hike every year and while it might not in fact be one of the most dangerous, it is definitely one of the most awesome in Switzerland. Great cinematography. They don't really look that exhausted to me. I've seen/been much worse :)

I’m scared of heights but I’m doing it. Yolo. The view beats my fears. I’ve followed hiked many dangerous things and literally had to look at my feet so I wouldn’t pass out but once I get to the top I look and break 😇

Anyone thinking of doing this hike would be well advised to pay CHF30 and become a patron of the Rega (the Swiss air-rescue). They may waive part or all of the fee for getting you off the mountain should the need arise. Otherwise it could get VERY expensive.

The tricky part is, regardless of which side you start, it's a comfortable T2/T3 hike (red/white sign), yet soon turns into T4 (white/blue) Tannhorn even T5 with little exit possibilities, and those who gives the chance to exit are steep descents. Great footage although you guys really went a bit naive into it 😏

Hey there. The video is just breathtaking! Do you mind if I ask you just a question? I am planning to visit the place with my drone, however the area is marked as a natural reserve area on the Swiss drone map. So my question is: have you asked for a special permission to fly your drone? Were there other drones flying?

Don't want to be mean or anything, but they had said that they only had one gulp of water left at 7:20. If you go to 8:15 and look at the person with a yellow backpack, you can see a full water bottle with water sloshing inside. There are also two similar bottles at 8:17 in the black backpack.

Bottom Line Up Front thank you for pointing out that this is not just a mere hike. It is a very challenging alpine tour on which enough (also “experienced”) hikers are losing their lives. So to all the tourists who aren’t sure about this: don’t. Just don’t.

YES, BUT WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PEEING OFF THE RIGHT SIDE. I DEFINITELY PREFER THE LEFT BECAUSE THE MORE GRADUAL SLOPE CAUSES IT TO JUST GO SLOWLY DOWN HILL INSTEAD OF FALLING LIKE RAIN. ALSO, THE VIEW IS MORE RELAXED. BUT HEY, TO EACH HIS OWN RIGHT?

Nowhere near the most dangerous hike in the world but it is indeed challenging and of course its no pushover.Tougher hikes in the Dolomites and other places but still this hike is certainly worth doing and extremely spectacular. You talked about having the wrong footwear on this hike and i must say i prefer hiking boots but what really made me somewhat incredulous was that one of youre group was wearing jeans, which are completely inappropriate for such a hike.In fact jeans are probably the worst type of clothing you can wear on any serious hike and no one in my hiking club would be seen dead in jeans.Anyhow i enjoyed youre video and keep up the good work.

As an alpine dweller I'm pretty sure my grandparents had more dangerous routes to school (at least that's what they like to tell). But joking aside, that's a nice ridge walk, but nothing more and especially not challenging at all. In the Alps this is probably something you would do on a sunny weekend with your kids.

Hahaha looks pretty safe tbh. Sure some cliffs but there’s a well defined path and everything. You guys also look like you got an amazing day! Everyone’s in tank tops and t shirts. Btw you displayed some ignorance I hoped you learned from. You are NOT supposed figure out your skill level on a trail not meant for “beginners”, you figure that out before hand by accomplishing smaller objectives. Otherwise you’re jeopardizing the hike and putting others in danger. Wrong shoes, not enough drink, not enough knowledge of the route and how much longer you had to go. Where I scramble, you don’t go into something without knowing all the details about the route or else you just give yourself a nice big fat chance of needing to call in helicopter rescue or dying. Multiple people have already died this season on mountains In my area that aren’t even that serious; going in blindfolded is foolish risk. Anyways awesome views Kev,
