Calling all big-word fans, this one’s for you! A neuroscientist and actress from a little show you may have heard of…The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik joins the Lautners to discuss her journey with mental health, both in and out of the spotlight. She explains her thesis dissertation, which, (grab a dictionary), was: "Hypothalamic regulation in relation to maladaptive, obsessive-compulsive, affiliative and satiety behaviors in Prader-Willi syndrome". She then dives into her early career as a teen actor and her home life surrounded by mental illness and addiction. She and Taylor bond over being Enneagram 4s, before she highlights two key tools that have helped her mental health: identifying food triggers and somatic work. Lastly, the Lautners ask her for advice on continued success in the mental health podcast space, as she’s hosted her popular podcast, Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, since 2021.
00:00 Intro & Welcome Mayim
00:51 Citrus Got Real
03:10 Mayim’s background as a Neuroscientist
10:30 How she started acting at a young age
13:00 Her life before The Big Bang Theory
16:52 Growing up surrounded by mental illness and addiction
25:07 Her experience on The Big Bang Theory
49:20 Advice on hosting a mental health podcast
54:22 Lemon 7 (Rapid Fire)

Thank you Taylor and Tay. I hope to get in touch with you. I thank you for what you are doing. I am a single mother of 6 sons. My youngest, identical twins, neurodivergent. Late diagnosis of Asperger's. Should have been diagnosed in elementary school.Therapist was livid as she said "they could have transitioned into adulthood with support". My youngest son, Michael, was killed at age 30 by blood thinners at UCSD La Jolla. His identical twin brother, both lived with me all of their lives, both "enably challenged" as they say (they don't like disabled), has been severely depressed, suicidal. 0 work, 0 disability benefits. I am fighting for his life. 0 support from so many that I have reached out to. I was forced to leave my son who I promised I would not leave him at the hospital. He tried to come with me, but he was just catheterized. I begged the doctors to let me stay. He had his Autism Speaks wrist band on. They did not listen. I realized I had to pull myself together. I went to him, told him "Stay strong, stay brave. I know you will. You are not alone. God is with you, Jesus is with you, your Angels are with you, your family's love is with you, I love you. I will be back as soon as I can." He nodded. He was so brave. He started to hemorrhage right after I left and was put on life support. Such disrespect and mistreatment. My 2nd son was on his 6th deployment. I told him to have the nurse put the phone to Michael's ear so he could talk and pray with him. I was in a hotel nearby. After he was on life support, I came back. I was forced to leave him again, even though I had permission to be there, they called security and had me escorted out. I told the security man, my oldest son was a police officer in Las Vegas. We had to disconnect Michael the next day, March 26, 2020. We had family & friends call on cell phone speaker. We were waiting for Michael's identical twin brother, Sean to call. The life support tube had been removed. Finally Sean got through. He was sleeping only to wake up to be told Michael was dying...to call him. Sean said: "I love you Michael". 2 breaths later Michael Graduated in my arms. Michael was waiting for Sean to get through to him. It's an incredible real life tragic reality. I was forced to leave my son. I felt like I drove my son to his death. He was to go there for treatment. I miss my son. I cry every day. We were very close. He gives me signs he is still right here. The love is strong from the other side..Heaven, across the Veil. I am also a survivor of violent crimes. I see you have a show on sexual assault. I am a survivor, not a victim.I actually wrote a book to help single parents and survivors of violent crimes. I have not promoted it, but it has helped those who have read it. I hope to get in touch with you. My daughter-in-law has life threatening cancer. Her husband, my 2nd son has Parkinsons, both are Veterans, 20 yrs and +. They have a young son. I thank you for your kindness. I thank you for caring. Mountain Lion Momma Bear Jill here. I love Mayim BTW!

I completely understand the grieving the loss of a career. I was a teacher during Covid and ended up leaving as well. 2021 I lost my best friend unexpectedly as well, so I was grieving the loss of her as well as in 2022, my career. I had worked to be a teacher since the age of 5. All this to say, I understand how Tay feels. Also, same name. I’m Taylor too haha

Question? what type of therapy is Mayim in? and how is she able to keep a therapist that long? I am not being rude I honestly want to know I am looking for that, I have struggled with that and I feel like I connected with her on that and would like to know more if you're will or if she is willing to share more information on it.

I haven’t watched this episode yet but I do listen to Mayim’s own podcast sometimes and I know a fair bit about therapy. As far as I know, Mayim is in some kind of psychodynamic-style therapy, which is a kind of therapy that looks at a person’s childhood/personal history when navigating their current issues. Mayim also talks a lot about “parts work” on her podcast, which is IFS (Internal Family Systems) lingo, and is another type of therapy approach. This could vary country by country, but typically, psychodynamic therapists will work with someone for as long as that person needs, which could span anywhere from 6 months to 5 years and beyond. In contrast, a very common therapy approach used these days is called CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) which looks at how a person’s thoughts impact their feelings and their behavior (and vice versa). This therapy approach is well-known for generally being a shorter-term therapy, and it is less common for a person to spend years working with the same CBT therapist.

Mayim always shared year by year how human perspective and their own narratives affect our own nature. Most of the times we don't need a special treatment. But, when it is needed the surroundings must or atleast consider that. It'll be great help. Hope people will work on that. Thank you for sharing your stories. Good podcast.😊
