The fight between 64-year-old Marston Riley and the 14-year-old student erupted over the teen being reprimanded for not wearing the proper school uniform. Cell phone video recorded by other students in the class captured the teen throwing a basketball at Riley before going on a racist tirade. Dave Lopez reports.

The whole system is failing both the students and teachers. If proper discipline and appropriate physical and psychological punishment was allowed to be used from day 1 these kids would know about consequences and never push a teacher to throw a punch. The legal system gives kids immunity to do and say shocking things with no recourse.

@@lifeisneverfair I agree, but when I went to school teachers had some authority to discipline, including verbal, the cane and expulsion. Now a kid can be a little angel at home and a complete ratbag at school and teachers have little ammunition to force a change.

I was jumped by 4 boys in my class. They were big trouble to every teacher for at least 3 years. They were in the office for something everyday and if it wasn’t the teachers, the bus drivers had them in the office. Our principle did nothing. I had to go to the emergency room and I was fired! The school board did nothing to help me. This also happened in front of 23 students and 2 other teachers.

well, since the teacher is not white, he might not get fired, but the student was a minority so he could be charged with a hate crime in which case he would have to be fired. Depends on how the school officials decide to handle it.

@redcomic619 So you agree with a 64 y/o adult hitting a 14 y/o minor in front of other minors repeatedly with a blunt object even after another adult tried to brake the fight? My best friend was a teacher for 30 years. The last few years have gotten so bad with extreme disrespect towards teachers. A student punched him from behind, and he ended up in the ER. The "consequence" the student received was a counseling session between the teacher and the student to help find common grounds. The school did this because the district adapted Restorative Justice practices as a way to lower their number of misbehaving students. Of all the years he devoted his life to helping students, all the outside of contracted paid hours he volunteered to tutor students to get to grade level, all that he's ever known, he walked out. It tore him apart emotionally. He was replaced quickly. It goes to show that you are replaceable in the workplace, do your best as an employee, but never let your job be a priority over your well-being, never. He is now in a much healthier environment, enjoying his life and new career.

Many students are disrespectful and violent. The problem is that nothing effective is being done to correct the behavior. Students are not afraid of the consequences. A teachers actual job is not only to teach the children, but take an authoritative stance in how you maintain and watch the children. This teacher wasn't trying to defuse the situation. He lost his shit and attacked a 14 year old CHILD with a blunt object. Then, on top of that, once the security officer broke it up, he went back for more. Discipline and violence are completely different. You exercise discipline with a purpose, to teach the kids values, actions and consequences. This was brutality, plain and simple. Both the student and the teacher should face the consequences of their actions accordingly. And the rule of law always applies.
@fungoorstitch
@fungoorstitch 5 лет назад
Discipline is subjective and can be administered through violence or nonviolence, for better or worse, good or for evil. All legal systems discipline through violence at some stage, so they can be the same thing. In any event, the teacher most certainly did show restraint. According to the news, everyone the kid came into contact with did for a long, long time dealing with his foul tongue. The teacher could have taken the kid's head off any time during the skirmish if he wanted, but he didn't. Back when things were as simple as they were always supposed to be, the teacher might have towed the kid outside by the ear and whipped him with a hickory branch, and that would have been the end of a lesson learned. Slowly but surely, people are starting to come back around to that because the results speak for themselves. I for one hope the teacher never, ever apologizes or capitulates in any way, and if the question was on today's voting ballot, I have no doubt people would probably just come out to agree.

Nah corporal punishment should never make a comeback in our school system especially with how teachers are underpaid and overworked now more than ever. They’ll be bringing their stress from outside into the class and taking it out on kids. Parents just don’t teach their kids to respect adults anymore. I work for a school district and I see time and time again parents neglecting to correct their child’s interactions with other adults. A lot of times, school staff just doesn’t have support.

The student didn't strike him?! If he's cussing at the teacher or acting up then send student to the office! Don't hit him! That is NOT your job! That is abuse of a minor and was caught on tape. The school might not press charges but what about the students family? The action was caught on tape.....they don't need the schools approval to charge.

Obviously, the kid wasn't getting disciplined for his attitude and actions at home.

You know every teacher across the nation that has been disrespected like this (and probably wanted to do the same thing) is at home doing the silent victory dance. Like: "YES!"

Funny how even the other kids realize who was the real victim here. Glad he’s got the support. We as a society need to stop taking 💩 from bullies and disrespectful people no matter their age.

Wow I was not expecting him to go that hard lol. But you can see from the reaction of the students, parents, and school that everyone is getting tired of this. And people forget that when students are allowed to go wild it’s their classmates that deal with most of it. Those kids mess with their classmates a ton more than teachers usually, so the other kids are happy when they finally are gone. It’s stressful to be around people who are nasty or violent.

Same. As much as I agree some of these kids need some serious ass whooping, I personally didn’t think this was appropriate especially at that strength. He was even going for a second punch. They’re little shit heads but they’re still kids. We should be leaving the whooping to the parents but chances are these kids are growing up without any discipline at home. I was once a teacher myself and the number of times I wanted to strangle them hs kids.. whew 😅

A few of my friends are teachers. I've heard some true horror stories. Like teacher/prison guard kind of stories. While it's never okay to hit a student; speaking from a 90's perspective, the kid had it coming. Kids these days think they are untouchable and it only made worse by bad policies. Teachers are fired and the kid in the wrong is fired and it can't keep happening. Hope he can keep his job and I'm glad other kiddos stood up for him.

The 90’s isn’t today. And gangs were far worse back then. Metal detectors in schools aren’t brand new smh. Stop acting like this is brand new. It just has another larger platform with social media.

Never ok? But had it coming? Why can't I just handle all of my own legal problems with violence?. As a matter of fact I know a whole lot of people who would just as soon love to handle their own problems in just such a manner. Well, after all even though it is wrong however like you just said, some people just have it coming, right? All you people need to go straight to hell for thinking that this is okay. If that was a white teacher hitting a student they would have burnt the fkn. school down

Agreed. This narrative of mean words excusing felony crimes in America is so out of hand. Shame on the people praising that teacher. A mature adult would have told the school administration do something about him or I quit. Not assault him. Holy cow. You don't fight kids as an adult unless in self defense. What did the kid do. Throw a basketball at his waist? Unbelievable. That man should feel deep deep shame.

I support that educator! As a retired educator,teachers should not be subject to abuse in the classroom. Administration needs to grow some balls and eliminate students who have the tendency to abuse teachers. Schools needs to provide a safe and orderly environment for teachers and students. Get rid of the ones who don’t want to be there.
