Mazda 3 i-ACTIV AWD diagonal test! | Surprise!
Test note: With TCS ON or OFF the results are the same! We were surprised it did it! No AWD disconnection even if we tried the same test over and over. Note that we had to be extra careful ( and slow ) due to ground clearance issue. When you see the car roll back, it's because we release throttle not to send it to fast and damage the underbody.
You can even get a Mazda 3 AWD in either the sports ( hatchback ) or the sedan version! With the Mazda 3 equipped with the i-ACTIV all-wheel drive, you can have serious fun in the snow! Mazda’s evolved i-ACTIV AWD system is available on 2019 Mazda3 and helps heighten the driving experience. Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD system adds “four-wheel vertical load” detection and works in harmony with G-Vectoring Control Plus to control torque
distribution between the front and rear wheels. As a result, it is fully capable of responding faithfully to the driver's intentions, regardless of the driving scene.

Car Question please do more AWD cars on this. Like the Altima awd. I thought only SUV’s were capable of having the tires off the ground but I guess not lol interesting to see a car do it. Liked!

Car Question, when you say no AWD disconnect is it one of the tricks with pressing the TC button for 30 seconds or just switch it off the normal way?

I'm a little bit confused about Mazda's "TCS Off" vs "Off-Road Traction Assist" on, say, their CX30 lineup when AWD is involved. For the US market it looks like the "Off-Road Traction Assist" button is in the same spot the "TCS Off" used to be in their SUVs thus far. I just got a CX30 (in Europe) with AWD but only have that TCS Off button & am wondering if it does the same thing as the US "Off-Road Traction Assist"; thus far wasn't able to get an answer to my question. Can you guys try to clear up the air if possible in a future vid please? With regards to AWD testing, you seem to be the go-to crowd that puts these cars to good testing. Thanks.

I saw a grey one of these on the hwy today. Let me tell you, these videos don't do the car justice. It looks much better in person. The distinctive angles and the crazy lighting on the doors are much more noticeable. I was really impressed. The front end is sharp too.

Alan Bowers Not really, no. If you don’t have enough power to propel the vehicle up the hill, then which wheel it goes to doesn’t really matter. The more powerful the vehicle, the better its chances to overcome the obstacle, even with limited traction. Remember, this isn’t a zero traction situation.

It did Surprisingly well. Other than it being very low to the ground I think it should do amazing as a Winter all little drive option.. Just will not be good in heavy deep snow.. But I think this might be my next car.

I just purchased an AWD 3 three days ago. If you need the extra space, get the Accord. Otherwise, the MAZDA3 is a great choice. Especially when optioned with the AWD system. Also, the headlights are standard LED and I believe they have auto high beams on the Preferred trim as up.

I wish they would give this car the Subaru Crosstrek treatment. Jack it up a couple inches, put cool wheels on it, and you've got yourself a proper little crossover. Not a fan of the CX30 styling

So, no overheating on the rear diff? I tried something similar on the CX-5 Turbo, and I ended up overheating the AWD...I didn't know temperature problems were a thing on the i-active AWD

@@Alvan81 maybe 15 , 18° (Celsius)...I tried to climb a similar incline, but with grass and dirt...I didn't try with traction control off to be honest, but I didn't feel that was the issue. But after some wheel spin I got the light on the dash

@@turboteam1 I have the 2017.5 CX-5. I got the AWD Grand Touring I love it!!! But I think the problem for the OP might also be the Tires! The stock tires are basically Street/Highway and I love them for myself (commuter); but for any kind of non paved use, or snow they are going to be useless.

Subaru may be in trouble. I'm so annoyed with my 2018 Subaru Crosstrek I might have to give this a look. Subaru simply cannot get the media system to work right, and it is super slow an boring.

I was actually looking into trading my Mazda for the Subaru Crosstrek because of the legendary subaru symmetrical AWD. Is the media/radio the only problem you have with the crosstrek? I'll probably get a cx-3 if you say the crosstrek isn't worth it

Way better then the crappy AWD in the Hyundai Kona. COME ON Hyundai.....give us this kind of quality AWD. My 2 inch lowered Kona needs it for hard corning on the street. AWD for a semi and hot hatch use case.

It is a compact sedan, and it does better than many SUVs (mazda own even), so I think it is a great performance for a car that is not intended for off road driving.

Wow sucks that companies are using brakes to say they are doing better. Subaru uses differentials to go up without brakes . brakes are fine but it just sucks that that's considered "improvement" my 2001 toyota had brake force distribution

vadim nesen lmfao yk this car has differentials too right??? actually all cars on the road do that i know of. i think you mean a limited slip differential. doesn’t really make much sense on this, it’s not supposed to be a serious performance car, and there’s not enough power for it to need an lsd. and for the awd, why would you jump up the cost with an lsd or a locking diff, it’s not supposed to be a serious off roader, just get you through snow and other slippery conditions

@@alecw7063 yes I know it has differentials. I'm saying it's open diffs with brake force distribution. All you have to do is program the system to brake each wheel according to the slippage. Simple. All they did was program. Not really an improvement.

vadim nesen no reason for a lsd, not going to be spinning the wheels much with 180hp. it would be nice for the fwd, but for awd i see no need for a lsd. it’s not claiming to be an off-road monster, so idk why you wanna add unnecessary cost for something like a limited slip or locking differential. just supposed to get you through some simple stuff no need for anything

Mazda AWD system shouldn't be tested this way and no one will use this car the way you do in real life. It's been tested in snow where this system should be used by people buying this car and it do well but even in this surface it gets the job done. Mazda AWD system is one of the best in this business.

Must depend, here in Canada they are legit the same price but the impreza base model is 1k less than the mazda3 gs AWD *Edit*: Just saw this comment is 2 years old and vehicle price has changed a lot

The car can propel itself with either front wheel, but not with either rear wheel. It's a poorly-made, front-biased AWD system that offers no advantage in handling or cornering. The rear mechanicals aren't even working most of the time, so basically you're carting around extra weight that's only going to help you on snow days.

Arthur Serino why would anyone put a rear bias awd on a compact car? it’d be cool but that’s just not feasible. and it’s better to have it disconnected most of the time unless you wanna be hitting the pumps way more often. there’s a reason and it’s called fuel economy.

It's a part-time AWD system, with a 0.5-1% duty cycle, basically a fake. There's nothing unfeasible about actually USING the equipment you've put in the car more than 3 times per year. It's worthless.

Arthur Serino how is that idiotic??? in a small car like this you wouldn’t have much weight over the rear end. it wouldn’t make sense to make it rear wheel drive bias you’d likely have worse traction. its also not all time awd to help improve full economy, and minimize power loss. you’ll have more power to the wheels and get better economy only turning all the wheels when you need to. rwd in such a small car would be horrendous you’d get no grip
