Mazda 3 Turbo, Factory Airbox with Corksport Turbo Inlet Pipe

I put the factory airbox on the car and paired it with an AFE high flow panel filter and the Corksport Turbo Inlet Pipe. I did it originally to get rid a high pitch harmonica/recorder noise at heavy throttle. Very annoying sound, I did not have a leak and there are others who have the same noise and some that do not. A nice side effect was of course lower intake temps and higher MAF g/s.

10-12g/s is huge dude. Especially considering you are using the stock air filter. I would imagine that even if the SRI is flowing more volume of air, its heated underhood air vs cooler channeled outside air. The cooler air would have a denser concentration of oxygen which in turn would give you more g/s of airflow.

Yeah, it's a non insignificant gain that can be felt. The temps are def cooler and have translated to cooler boost temps and cooler post intercooler temps, and heat soak in that regard has been measurably reduced.

Very sound logic behind this (pardon the pun). Maximized flow gains and kept sound levels mostly unaltered. Do you hear any of that high-pitch whine/spool up noise when building boost under load? Obviously something we can't tell from a free revving video.

does the TIP kit attach to the stock airbox without any issues? i prefer the factory box over the SR.

I wonder how the CorkSport SRI compares to the BMS cold air intake as far as harmonics? I was looking at buying the BMS one

I have a question and I think you're the guy that knows just how to answer it. My question is regarding the Mazda automatic transmissions, in general, what is the best way to drive them for longevity using the example of how dual clutch transmissions don't like stop and go and respond well to creeping in low speed traffic,whats your take on skyactiv drive, accelerate with a firm press on the pedal.

I would just drive them like a normal vehicle, they are meant to handle quick and slow acceleration from a stop equally.

I emailed Corksport asking if the intake system would be PnP using the stock airbox. I got nothing back from them. I am not interested in the BOV sound and I don't want to be drawing engine compartment heated air into the cone air filter. I prefer the stock airbox. The Q I have for you is, the silicone elbow I see in your video, is that the hose supplied in the CS kit, or aftermarket? Thanks. I too own the same Mazda in the video. Owned Mazda's since 1973. Still have my 1989 323GTX. Thanks!

The hose I'm using came with the TIP, talking to a few people it looks like there is some production variation with the TIP and the silicone hoses as some don't line up as well as mine and trimming is needed.

Thanks, much appreciated. OT, but I installed a UPR oil catch can on mine. After seeing how much oil a OCC caught on my Speed6 and my twin turbo Ford F150 I did the same to my Turbo3. I like the way the UPR mounts and has molded hoses and fits perfectly and out of the way. Cheers. @@21mazda3turbo3

notice any difference with the box back on besides noise reduction or is it negligable? Also are those Advanti rims?

More reported MAF at high rpm, much lower intake temps that have turned into lower charge air temps. It feels a little more responsive top end, where most of the higher MAF readings have shown up. Rims are 18×8.5 +38 Enkei Raijins.

I have 6 with the 2.5t and the whole CS intake setup (SRI, TIP and heat shield). At high throttle angles I get a distinct "ringing" noise that does sound like somebody blowing through a harmonica really hard lol. Is that the noise you were getting? I've owned 6 other modded turbo vehicles in my lifetime and none of them have made this noise. It's definitely not the turbo "whistle" I'm accustomed to.

Yeah, that's a good way to describe it. I captured it in one of my earlier videos when I just had the SRI when I installed the TIP it became very annoying.

Are you still running the 63.5mm cat back? I'm having a hard time choosing between the 63.5 and the 80. I want a little more noise but i dont want it to be obnoxious

Yes 63.5 for now. Its not obnoxious at all, nothing to worry about there.

Based on some of the data points I'm logging I would say the TIP does have a benefit with the stock box.

I'm using the cs tip with stock airbox and AFE dryflow filter, very noticeable gains, increased responsiveness in the throttle, torque curve seems to have been bumped up across the board. On top of that I'm getting about 2-3mpg better mileage than before and its warmer now than it was before I installed the tip. Just fyi, for my '23 turbo hatch, the TIP will fit on the stock airbox but either needs to be trimmed or shoved to the point where theres a small kink in the silicone elbow. I'm currently looking for an aftermarket elbow.
