Perfect fix! Spot on! A1! You Rock! Hit the nail on the head! My daughter purchased a used Mazda5 and this P0442 code was present. I can tell the prior owner had tried to chase down this issue and had already replaced the gas cap. I replace it as well given the inexpensive cost, but without success. I then disconnected and tested the purge valve located next to the engine as you suggested and it tested fine (couldn't blow air through it, default position is closed), so I then thought it must be the Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid (Part Number: LF3T18741) per your video which I purchased from my local Mazda dealer's parts department. Price:$ 77 w tax. It was a gamble to spend that $ not knowing if it was what was needed. I think the default position for this valve is open and it needs some other conditions to be right to make it close (like power and a refueling cycle) - so I couldn't test it in place. Thankfully I had a 1/2 impact driver and that allowed me to take off that steel cover-plate under the rear of the care reasonably easily. I used that same impact to spin off the nuts that hold the Vapor Canister in place and accidentally sheered one off one of the posts (maybe I should have sprayed it down with penetrating oil and slowly removed those small nuts by hand with a socket wrench). It's held on now with just one nut and I added a few zip ties to the surrounding metal to keep it in place. As you said, you don't get instant feedback that replacing this valve is the fix because you have to wait until you have an empty the gas tank and then refill it. When we finally had to fuel-up we noticed the error code was gone! Yay! Thank you. You shot a great video and explained the situation and repair very well. RU-vid is a great place if you want to learn.

After 100+ miles without the check engine light on, I can say it was a success to replace the fuel canister valve that was suggested in this video. Thank you for the assistance.
Just the did the same fix today. Hopefully the code will go away. My car looks exactly as the yours, even the color is the same. The interesting thing is that the vent valve only closes during the test. In other words, when the vent valve leaks only the evap test fails - the evap system is working normally and no gasoline evaporation is escaping to the atmosphere: only the capability of creating a vacuum to test for leaks is lost. BTW, two out of the four bolts broke when I removed the plate. UPDATE: The fix worked. Had to drive around 60 miles with tank at 3/4 to have the EVAP tests to run and pass. I also tested the old vent solenoid today when I put 12 VDC on it it closes but when I blow on it It is clear that is not closing 100%.

What sucks about changing that CV vent valve is when the mounting studs and hardware break off when trying to remove due to being very corroded then it goes from a quick swap out to a small fab project….good info though on stop fueling when the pump clicks… these vehicles are not the cars of old where you can fill to the very top with no consequences.
I have this code P0442 on my 2010 Mazda 3 and I tried to changed my gas cap, and still the engine lights keep on. I hope I can solve with this problem after I change this Canister vent. Thank you!

If you have a2011 Mazda 3, 2.0 engine, you"ll be pulling the subframe down in order to get at it! The dealer wants $500, to do it! It"s not a 10 minute job on my vehicle!
Hi, I've changed my purge and vent valve engine code p0442 is still goes on. When I start the car it goes on immediately and when I clear it to drive its good until i turn off the care and turn it back on. I'm stumped. Now when the p0442 code goes on almost shortly after a u0264 code goes on with the AT light. I almost feel like it goes on limp mode as a safety feature or i could be completely wrong. I do drive the Mazda 5 on manual mode. When its an auto mode the AT light jumps on with the check engine Valve. Can anyone give me some insight?

My 2012 mazda5 has no check engine light or code but when defrost is on it smells gas inside cabin. The smell is so bad that I drive with my windows down. No leaks anywhere at all. Also, when i fill up gas, i stop at the click when pump stops pumping fuel but the fuel splasehs out of tank. Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks

I couldn't get the plate bolts off so I installed the new one with the plate unmoved. However, I also had trouble with the two smaller bolts that hold the valve in place. @@2strokeguru
I am grateful for you taking the time to show the vent sensor location. Do you know if that plate is the right place if I were to jack up the rear end of the car using a floor jack? I am trying to install a trailer hitch on my 2015 Mazda 5.
hi, i did a live scan on my car on the evap system vapor pressure and with the car running or not running with key on, the pressure is -1300 way off normal. is this a leak or clogged canister thanks
@@2strokeguru ok ill look it up ..the scan tool said it should be -.35-50 not -1300 so a leak would be +number and a blockage is a - number your thinking? thanks 4 the reply
For testing is a little difficult with out a computer and smoker machine you would fill the line with smoke through the port under the hood with green cap and use the computer to manually open and close the valve
Ok my problem appear just after i overfilled my car (a lot of gasoline went into the hole under where the gun go) so i will test the purge valve since its easy and if its ok i will purchase and install a new canister vent valve.
