I was at LeMans when this won, stayed up all night to hear it as it went past, it was the only car you could identify as it was approaching. Truly an awesome experience.
The truly amazing thing then was that at the Auberges Des Hunaudieres you could get to the Mulsanne straight and sitting on a wall about 10-15ft from the Armco barrier watching them come along the straight, a huge rush - I have the photos too! Unfortunately, the next time I went to Le Mans I went back round there, but they had blocked off the access and you couldn't see anything.
First it sounds like an air raid siren. Then a banshee. Then like someone has captured approximately six million angry hornets. And put them in a cage with the banshee. Ungodly and beautiful.

I remember when I first watched this I had my headphones on full blast and I literally screamed “MY GOD THAT IS LOUD”. I’ve seen and heard a lot of race car flybys and this one is the only one where I felt the hairs on my back stand up. Such a beautiful car. The hybrids of today sound more deep. This was just a wail as it went up through the gears and as it flew by. Absolutely orgasmic. I wish I was alive when these beasts ruled Le Mans
Thanks for starting the video early enough so we could listen to it in the distance coming towards us. Such an amazing sound and iconic livery. Sounds so much better than hybrid F1 cars.
Man, that gave me huge goosebumps!! Love how you can hear the downshifting into the chicane and then back up through the gears. Amazing! Can only imagine how awesome it sounds in real life.
I was lucky enough to have heard the 787B at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium in 1990. Looking back now some 30+ years later, I didn't realise at the time just how lucky I was. Truly a unique and never to be repeated sound.
I was at Le Mans all those years ago and I have to say you could hear the Mazda’s from some considerable distance away and it was just the most amazing sound track ever, one that I doubt will ever be repeated. To this day watching this video makes the hair’s on the back of my neck stand on end..!!
I watched this twice in a row and it gave me goosebumps both times. Impressive. (3rd time, no goosebumps but still, it's a shame racing cars don't sound like this anymore)
Probably my favorite flyby video of all time. A perfect symphony, from the birds chirping and the faint sounds of acceleration and braking echoing off in the distance; to the final straight line acceleration beginning the crescendo in anticipation for the of unadulterated banshee wail and it passes. Excellent.
There's never been a machine that's made such ghostly sounds like this. I've heard just about all of them and nothing comes close to this 4 rotor wankel engine sound. I saw this car race at a road course in New Orleans back around 1990. When this car was at full rpm's, the sound wowed the crowd.
@@calvinnyala9580 in 1991, i was at the street circuit in new orleans and saw this car race. in 2001, i was at the 24hours of daytona and saw the ferrari 333sp v12 race and that car indeed sounded amazing, too. trump 2020.
Takes me back to the opening lap f1 of Monza 96 listening to a whole pack of V10 and V12s blasting through the woodland full throttle a wonderful wonderful sound
That has to be the greatest racecar sound of the 20th century. I heard all the superlatives of Mazdas amazing 787B prototype Le Mans winner of 1991, but never heard or saw it in action until today. Mazda deserved the win for that magnificent engine sound alone 🙏🏽
Just hearing the sound from the distance, "approaching" and increasing.. I can not express this feeling with words.. I just hit the replay button again and again
One day, I WILL get my hands on ne of these and drive the legend itself. Le Mans is a dream. It may be retired from such competition, but the beauty this car brings is phenomenal.

When the IMSA RX-792Ps raced at Laguna Seca their trumpet-like blare absolutely filled the circuit, the sound had an omnidirectional quality like nothing else I've heard in almost 50 years of spectating. Thrilling!
The sound this engine produces sends shivers down my spine, one could only imagine how it would feel being there for real, it would be unnnnforgetable and life changing !!!!

One of my favorite cars from Gran Turismo.. gotta love that rotor demonic shriek! The sound, shape, and livery all work together.. all race cars should look & sound this good.
The sound of this car is the sound of memory the feeling the engine awakens in me of an engine roaring on the straigtaway pushing towards victory that is the sound of the 787b for me the sound of racing
