In 1969 - 70 I was working in a Texaco station in Southfield Michigan. There was a customer came in the station with a Cosmo. It looked exactly like yours - same color. He said he got it while he was in the service in Japan and brought it back to the U.S. When he opened the hood I asked if it was a turbine. I had not seen or heard of a Wankel then. If there are three Cosmos in the states, my chances are 33% I saw that same car over 40 years ago. Good to see one again!

in 69-70 i think not many people in the whole US had ever heard of the wankel, i think the guy could had told you it was salvaged plasma engine from an ufo that crashed in the USSR and most people would had believed it

Jeb! Bush interesting. Is this verified and do we know why he does not collect Ferrari? Apart from the fact that however many millions Jay has invested in this collection (it is probably the best most extensive vehicle recording in the world isn't it?) you would almost double that investment to include all the significant Ferrari's.

Mazda really liked the name Cosmo because they used it for several different cars. I owned a 1976 Cosmo, also known as the RX5. Except for the rotary engine, there was nothing special about the car and it didn't sell very well in the US. Mine had bad seals and produced a huge cloud of blue smoke when I started it in the morning, but no smoke after it warmed up and it never had any trouble passing the emissions test.
@kfdave
@kfdave 9 лет назад
The rotary was the key. I had a '73 RX4 wagon back in the 80's, like you say nothing special, typical Japanese car, but ohhhhh, that motor! Damn that thing was quick! A LOT of fun to drive. Another reason they didn't catch on was frankly, the mileage sucked. Again, basically the same import car, but your Datsun or Toyota at the time would push 30 mpg, with the rotary you'd be lucky to get 20, if you kept your foot out of it....... I could never keep my foot out of it.

@kfdave
@kfdave 9 лет назад
Paul Corpas Ortiz '74 maybe? C'mon, it was 30 years ago! I've owned more cars than I can count . The more my addled brain thinks about it, it might have been a 3 not a 4..... Soooo many cars, so little brain cells left...
@paulcorpasortiz9619
@paulcorpasortiz9619 9 лет назад
Dave Howland No really. They started bringing the RX4 in 1974. The japanese model year starts in Jan. not in Sept like the USA. Its ok you're allowed.
@kfdave
@kfdave 9 лет назад
Paul Corpas Ortiz The more my fading brain thinks about it I'm now pretty sure the wagon was an RX3, still not positive. I would absolutely love to find one of the old ones to bring home, I know, you want a rotary, buy an RX7, too easy, I want an RX2, 3, or 4.

I let my sister-in-law borrow my 72 RX2 and she told me that the car was pretty zippy except the buzzer kept going off. I never heard any buzzer while driving it nor did I hear it when I checked it out. I later figured out she was setting off the red line warning alarm. I'm just glad I wasn't in the car while she was driving. :)

For 1973 this model in the video was consolidated into the 808 sedan tooling as a sub model of the Rx-3, the Sport (or SP in the USA.). Offered only as the 2-door coupe It was announced by a revised front with a "smiling" honeycomb grille and the quad headlights in individual U-shape bezels and in the back by the taillights from this Cosmo 2-seater reshaped into smaller units. These were two on either side with smaller turn signals between them. They were accommodated within the tail panel. Those details were thereafter applied to all Rx-3s for 1974 and the American SP later used six vertical rectangular units along with under-bumper and tall spoilers with optional rear quarter and rear window slats. The final model years in America put "Rx3 SP" decals all around. This Cosmo model itself (again from this video) was then revised with 5-passenger seating and a more rounded fastback body on the Rx-4 chassis as the Cosmo Series CD in 1975 and sold in the USA to 1978 alongside the Rx-3. Then it was withdrawn from the USA market to make room for the Mazda Rx-7.

Jay I've owned 5 rotaries 74' RX3 and RX4, 75' Rotary PU (too small for me), 84' GSL-SE, and now own a 93' RX7 TT. Love the engine to death. I started with 2--stroke motorcycles so it was a perfect progression. Savant (73' RX3 you did a story on) is a buddy of mine. Would love to see if you have a latter RX7 Spirit A--spec. If you have one do a story on it.

Jay should get ahold of one of those old mazda REPU pickups, would be awesome too see one of those restored in his garage. I had one was a 74 i believe and came with the 13B two rotor wankel. very smooth, High rpm capable. Plus i loved the styling of those old pickups- flared fenders, battery in a box near the cab, alot of fun to see and drive.

While i know it was a pretty unique vehicle, The one i had personally was not in the best shape, cosmetically. I might still have some pictures of it and if i find them i'll post them somewhere you guys can see it. The body was starting to rust out in several spots, I had taken pictures of the cab floor which had also began to rust through. Was living in WA near seattle at the time so oxidation took a major toll on it over the years before i got it. The motor and transmission were both very strong with minimal work- cleaned the carburetor (came stock with what i believe was a holley-designed 4 bbl) And it ran great for a year or so up until i sold it, and it might still be running today, though the reason i sold it at all was because it was in a bit of an accident- Had it parked alongside the road at my house and some kids in a little honda civic t-boned the side of it ( I lived in a house that was inline with another street, in a T shape) and it actually broke the left side leaf spring and badly damaged the fender/wheel well on that side. was sad to see it go but i did sell it to a gentleman who had restored several of them and planned to use it for parts in his then-current project. It was a joy to drive- very unique feeling and especially sounding. only a few occasions i really opened it up to see what it was capable of, and by today's standards it was not 'fast' by any means but 'just enough' power to be very fun. I don't really have any example of something to compare it to, as the rotary seemed to be pretty modest at low rpms, and gradually, smoothly built power up to 8500 rpm. I think there was more power to be made but knowing i was running a completely stock engine i didn't want to push it haha- it was my daily driver at the time. Engine and transmission were both totally stock, and i was told by several people that 13B rotary is a great catalyst for a performance project. I guess there are alot of people who race them, in the mazda rx- cars.

Jay, You have a superhero car! They customized one of these Mazda Cosmos for the Japanese TV series, "Return of Ultraman" (1971)! It had the license number MAT-1 on the TV show, MAT standing for "Monster Attack Team"! There's a Japanese policeman who owns a restored Mazda Cosmo that's painted up like the one used in the TV series. He got his hands on 3 other Cosmo's but I think he uses the other vehicles as parts cars to support the one that's painted up like the Ultraman vehicle.

Thing about Mazda rotaries (and the NSU too) is the faster you spin them the more power they make the power curve is a upward curve. they continue to make more power right up until the time parts start popping through the hood.
@GlassTopRX7

Not true, the power rolls over from 6500-7500. As they don't have a valves, the don't have the hard rollover that a piston engine would have from valve float

Lovely car. Still would like to see more wankel development. Jay I for one apreciate your restoration/rebuild ethos. Keep em pretty standard, make minor obvious improvements. I like the 12a and it has a fair bit of tuning potential. I also like things like a 13b bridge port. And of course the peripheral ports are outrageous and have to be experienced first hand to be "believed". Mazda and Le man's are a significant history. I gosh how I respect/ live Japanese engineering. Qaulity then and now.

I love that sound to :D and oil consumption is because of the apex seals need to be oild, you can reduce it by decoupling the oil injection pump and run on 2 stroke mix (its even better) or modify the oil pump to accept 2 stroke and pump it in (no more engine oil consumption).
