If the 2017 Mazda CX-5 looks familiar, it’s because Mazda does not want to change a successful formula. To me this looks like a face lift, but Mazda claims this CX-5 is an all new generation. Mazda CX-5 turned out to be a key model for the Japanese car manufacturer. 5 years after debut it adds up to a quarter of Mazda’s global sales. Mazda CX-5 found over 1.5 million buyers on 120 markets. Mazda CX-5 debuted in 2012, and was the first model to feature full array of SKYACTIV technologies. The car was designed according to KODO design language. KODO means Soul of Motion. Mazda claims the anthropocentric character of the Jinba Ittai concept, that is union of horse and rider, is best expressed in the sphere of dynamics.

I purchased a 2017 GT Tech 6 weeks ago have to say it is one of the best suv's I have ever owned. This is a solid fully loaded vehicle that is fun to drive.

I have a 2016.5 cx5 and it feels much more "sporty" than the 2017 cx 5. The Mazda cx 5 chief explained it well, he said the 2016 was made for drivers and the 2017 was made for passengers, I couldn't agree more! If you want a fun car to drive the 2016 is the one to get.

jim baker The sporty feeling difference is so little, the post 2017 has so much more modern refinements it has a lot more features and it is also a bit more reliable. I recommend.

Great review one more time! It would actually be nice if you can even make them around 15-20 minutes. I know you do 2 of them for each car but still I really enjoy your approach and your comments.

1. There is only so much I can do during a launch event. 2. Basically every minute beyond 10 adds at 15-30 minutes of work. So a 20 minute video would cost me up to 5 hours more work.

I think they changed a bit too much for it to be called a facelift. With facelifts, they usually only change the bumpers and lights, and fiddle a little with the interior bits. With this, they changed all the body panels, and as you say, pushed the a-pillars back, which is not something you do with a facelift. Sure, it rides on more or less the same platform as the old one, but that's no bad thing, and in my eyes, this is a new generation.

Very smart car with cohesive design. Nothing to offend anyone and a lot to please. The red colour suits it well and, in my opinion, is rather special. Engine choice seems rather conservative. No turbo high-torque-at low-revs petrol engines for instance. If the price is right it should sell well. It has to in the UK or Mazda might as well give up. It has nothing else that sells enough to keep their dealers happy.

Couldn't agree with you more regarding the MZD Connect system. I've got the same system in my Mazda 2 and It's utter garbage. In no particular order the sat nav will often take you to a different location to the one programmed in, it'll forget it was playing a CD when you restart the car and give you an error message saying "CD could not be verified, or was removed", it'll forget what it was playing on the USB when you restart the car and start from the first song that was originally loaded onto the memory stick. Also, it's unintuitive to operate, very laggy on occasions, often when using the sat nav you'll have taken the exit at the roundabout before it says take the next exit. It continues to disappoint daily and is just another frustration, along with build quality issues, with my Mazda. First and last Mazda I'll ever own if that's what they think is acceptable in a 21st Century car!

The whole car doesn't even come close to okay! Thankfully I only have finance until September, at which point I'll hand it back to Mazda with great relief. The worst car I've owned since I started driving in 1983. A friend of mine was looking at buying a CX-5, but after all of the problems I've had with the build quality (numerous rattles, poorly spot welded body joints, failed a/c, corroding alloys) of my 2015 2 and the continual problems with the MZD Connect system he bought a Kia Sportage instead and is well pleased.

Please review the automatic trans on the 2018 CX-5. I've heard Motor Trend say is does not work well with the 2.5L engine.

It does resemble the old car somewhat, although it's a brand new car. However I think the old model looks better, it's a more homogeneous design. The front on the new model is way too long in my opinion, and makes it look weird.

@@TGeorgian I can only tell you how it is from my point of view :) If you're looking for something interesting, and AWD is not a priority, the C5 Aircross should be significantly cheaper than the recently refreshed 3008. Mazda only in AWD with a manual transmission, as their automatic is terrible to drive.

I don't like this Mazda condom design. ...By the way, I hate when people constantly ask "can you please test this... car? do you make a review about ...", annoying, ya, em, hm, just I would be really super extremly happy, if you one day would get an Alpha Romeo Stelvio, that is such a nice ship!
