The Mazda CX-7 is a perfect case study of the perils of introducing a car to one market that's clearly been designed for another. When it was first sold in this country, it was only offered with a thirsty 2.3-litre petrol engine and sales suffered as a result. What might have worked really well in California didn't look quite so appealing in a filling station in Croydon. Mazda belatedly introduced a diesel engine for the car and its fortunes picked up a little but by that time the CX-7 was approaching the end of its life. All of which is a bit of a shame, as the CX-7 is a genuinely likeable vehicle and represents a bit of a used bargain, in diesel guise at least.

Purchased my 2011 Mazda CX-7 2.5L SVI trim slightly used with low miles back in 2013. Today it has 308,000 Miles on the original engine and transmisión. Still going strong. I have retired it as my daily driver. I have gifted it to my 16yo son as his 1st car. Most importantly is regular scheduled maintenance. I have not missed a single oil change or transmission flush. Early on I upgraded headlight bulbs to HID and it made a huge diferente in nighttime driving. No need for fog lights or fog light kit. I upgraded tires to all terrain tires. I added factory roof bars so I can mount cargo basket on roof. Unscheduled maintenance cost has been good. I replaced radiator at 130K miles. Alternator at 200K. My power steering pump finally gave out at 300K miles. Replaced and fixed it myself for less than $100. I have replaced a$5-$6 plastic gear on the widow roll up drive that commonly breaks at least 6 times. I’m about to take out all the seats wash them and leave the interior like new again. The only thing that is quite worn out is my steering wheel. My engine compartment is quite dirty but everything works fine. I still enjoy driving the CX-7 and I have 2 newer Mercedes-Benz vehicles too.

I have a 2011 cx7 GX 2.5 fwd base model. Mazda motor, Toyota Aisin 5 speed auto. No turbo problems, no ford transmission or awd system, no ford problems. Love it. It’s very comfortable and great as my daily driver. And I can get 700 kms highway.

Why wasn’t the CX-7 available with an automatic gearbox in the UK like it was in other markets where it was sold, such as in North America, Australia and Russia?

Nice review on the SUV, it really looks good still in 2022. I'm thinking of buying this car and only thing that worries me is that I heard the diesel versions have problem with mixing diesel fuel into the oil so it comes to serious damage on the engine. Does someone had that problem?

It is a problem. But careful maintenance it is avoidable. It's caused by the engine being turned off during the regen process. So the main thing is avoid short journeys and if you notice the revs being slightly higher sit there and wait for them to drop before switching off. Check the oil levels regularly and if its rises to the x mark on the dipstick change it. Do very regular oil changes between 3k and 5k depending on whether you have done long or short journeys and it should be fine. Also when buying it is worth having forscan software and cable to read the timing chain stretch angle. If It's less than 10.45 It's okay but if it's close maybe stay clear. Anything up to the low to mid 9's it will have loads of life left in it if looked after. Even the high 9's it's still fine but be careful to service regularly and expect a chain may need replacing in the future. The engines have a bad rep but the ones that have been cared for go on for miles. My 2.2d 6 (same engine) has 225k and is still going strong. People have got them into the 300k mark.

My 2011 2.5L, 5spd auto averages 24-26 mpg. And that’s with slightly wider and heavier all terrain tires.

DON'T buy cx-7, i've had the 2.3T and in less than a year it doubled the price in repairs. One engine rebuilt and after 70km, got new one, the POS got on fire, but sadly people helped and saved it - all under the hood had to be replaced. Check engine light was constatly on for something, rust was on every panel and floor, consumption was 20/100 highway and 25/100 city driving, so i just scraped it. Long story short the only thing that didn't had time to break was the automatic gearbox. I hate this "car" from the bottom of my hearth and if i can save one person from buying one, i will be happy!

Consider me saved. Just saw a beautiful 2007cx-7 for sale, suspiciously cheap. Now I know why. Thank you.

Thanks for this info I really needed it, almost bought an insanely cheap cx7 but then I came here for such a comment and I found it. Consider me saved too and thanks again.

Was it Diesel or petrol? I heard the diesel before 2010 are unreliable

Here in the US any Mazda with the 2.3L turbo is going to need much more service that the non turbo 2.5L model. I have a 2011 CX-7 with 308K Miles. The 2.5L engine is reliable, simple and easy to maintain.

Do NOT buy this car. Worst car mazda ever made, join any cx7 page and you'll notice how thirsty and unreliable these are. 2 turbos blown in a year. Never had an issue with any other car
