The rotary is a good engine IF it's applied in the right situation. It's great for aviation, and in the roll of what essentially amounts to an electric car generator it might do well at that too due to its light weight and the fact it won't be used for high revolutions.

Our first new car was a ‘73 RX-3. It took me a few weeks to keep from squealing the tires in the first three gears. Maybe not surprising since our car till then was a ‘51 Chevy.

Mazda partnering with Toyota now would be a big plus. Their cars are made for driving fun unlike many Toyota's. This could benefit both companies. Doesn't Toyota already own 5% of Mazda anyway ?

Well Toyota cars is the only brand that can stand to my abuse,,so they are the most fun to drive as it starts and runs again,they will take abuse like its part of the job ,,Toyota =more fun, more racing, more off-roading, farther, faster, longer, harder, less maintenance, getting home, more times than it should, that is important,,i fail to see where a Toyota is less fun.

Maybe won't be that often since it's so tiny and is only used as range extender. Also I guess it won't be spinning all day at 10k rpm

Apex seal failure was a problem in the earlier iterations of the engine that only had a single oil-feed line to lubricate the engine. Line failed, Apex seals failed. Luckily they're actually a very cheap part and a rotary engine is beyond simple to rebuild compared to a standard engine so it's not the end of the world. Dorito fans have mitigated this problem by feeding their old Wankel Rotary Engines pre-mixed fuel. They'll last nearly forever if run on pre-mix. With that said, I have to imagine that this engine will either have an excessively over-engineered oil system or it will run at lower RPM than the traditional 10k RPM brapbrap Dorito boys are running at... Wouldn't be the only improvement Mazda has made since the 80s/90s...

The idea of a gas-driven engine powering an electric engine has been used on Trains for decades - Diesel Electric Engine. Very efficient for weight to output, etc.

Ferdinand Porsche had success using a similar system in his racing cars in the early 20th century as well. Not exactly new or innovative technology. In the auto world it has been a coined 'series hybrid' design but has also been advertised as extended-range electric vehicles or range-extended electric vehicles by various automakers.

I love rotary!!!! My 1988 RX-7 is the best I've ever owned!!! Very few mechanics will work on them downside...but it's worth it once you get going again!!! I've learned to fix most of my own problems and I'm far from a mechanic!!!!

I would guess a small rotary engine to run a however-many-kW generator is going to have a much easier life than it would get in a sports car. No crazy changes in RPMs, torque, temperature or anything else, just a constant however-many-kW load at constant everything else to run the vehicle and slowly charge the battery until the battery is over the generator cut-off threshold or the vehicle gets turned off. They can optimize the hell out of it in ways they wouldn't be able to otherwise.

From my experience of the rx8 it does poor mpg however it is driven, 20mpg at 40mph and 20mpg at 100mph, it's not fast either. Worse than any V8 I've had, inc my e39 m5. I hope Mazda have thought about the reasoning behind using it, ie it works better, putting a rotary engine in just because they fail to give up on a bad idea is a poor reason and subsequently it will be a poor car.

It's kind of a weird idea tho. A diesel (or even just a petrol) engine in ideal conditions (constant low rpms) is very efficient and would fit the job. I don't see why we need a rotary

@@xanthuumnihyr5319 I can think of one simple reason why Mazda would choose a rotary: you get 4-5X the power density compared to a piston engine since rotaries give you three power strokes per rotation instead of only one every other piston stroke.

@@teardowndan5364 Actually i don't think you do because rotaries need to get "close to the redline" to approach their max power. Diesels and especially turbocharged diesels (the norm) make like 80% of their max power at half their max rpm.

I love the idea of rotary engines. Smaller lighter no pistons or whatever - what an invention. They just need to find a way to perfect it . It still does not work (as in dependability) two of my rots have blown lol but I stand behind them still

It’s easy to stand behind them still when they’re blown. Couldn’t resist. I love them. Rod Millen’s rally RX-7’s were legendary. This may be the perfect application for rots in “civilian” cars. I’ve often thought a good gas turbine would be the best range extenders, but manufacturers have little recips that are nearly free so that’s what they use. Mazda may have made the best decision possible with off-the-shelf, in-house technology for a range extender.

The rotary engines are very smooth running. Got a demo ride in a 70's RX4 with the Wankel 13B rotary. It was impressive. At idle the engine barley moved. Power was linear with increasing RPM's. They had a buzzer to keep you from over revving the engine with the manual.

We bought the daughter a used Mazda with the Wankel engine in 1982. It was a great little engine, always started and ran good. The kids were hard on the car and the body accumulated a few dints, but 2-3 years later when we traded it off, the engine still ran great.

I started up a neglected RX-8 today and it was interesting. It had a really rough idle. Turns out it's the MAF that isn't mixing the air/fuel properly. I unplugged the MAF and it idled great!

I had a question I recently picked up a 2002 Toyota tundra limited TRD now it seems to run really great even though it says it has 300,000 mi on it but it feels like it's running like a brand new truck haven't had any problems except for the other day it did not have any pickup and then all of a sudden it went away and had plenty of power when I hit the gas it was non-responsive then after like three or four seconds it was back to normal with very responsive and very plenty of power it has the 4.7 now I bought the truck for $5,000 is it worth keeping and because it is in great shape is it worth keeping around and if the motor should blow up maybe buying a new motor and put in it

What was the physical size of that RX7 engine? How much did it weigh? What is weight of a typical piston engine with the same horsepower? When you have those numbers, you'll see why.

@@pirateman1966 From reading your comments, you sir appear to know very little about Wankel engines. The Wankel engine was a massive commercial failure in the aircraft industry and only saw very limited commercial production in automobiles. The Wankel was ultimately a failure in all applications. Mazda board of directors voted in May 2009 to abandon all development of production Wankel engines and set a date to end production by 2013. Poor sales resulted in all production being shut down 6 months earlier on June 22nd 2012 at 4:30 pm Tokyo time.

back in the 70's when i was visiting my friend in california she let me drive her new mazda rotary from sacramento to lake tahoe and it had the power for the mountain roads. it had a whole different feel and sound, i really liked it.

The rotary is perfect for the job. Its a small engine that can make plenty of power. I remember reading about Audi planning to do the same thing with a hybrid car, a small rotary engine for hybrid car, but they nixed it.

I had an RX-8. It was fun to drive. Only down side was the best fuel economy I was ever able to get was 23 mpg highway. It did have an issue that if I started it up and shut the engine off before it got up to full operating temperature it would flood the next time I tried to start it. Initially the only way I could get it to restart would be to remove all four spark plugs, clean them with brake cleaner, dry them and blow out both combustion chambers with compressed air. Later I found a special startup procedure that eliminated this problem.

Hey Scotty love the channel man and you’ve been lots of help teaching me how to do oil changes correctly and regular service myself, anyways I have a 2013 Jetta 2.5 se and it makes thunk noise right below the gear shifter area and it only happens when I turn the wheel as far as can go and when accelerate too quick, any idea what it might be?

A buddy of mine had a Mazda RX7 many years ago (the old body style) and that car was JUST AMAZING!!! Back then, I didn't know much about the rotary engines up until now, when we all got a chance to be educated thanks to Scotty -:)... That RX7 was SO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE!! Let me tell you, it was FAST!!! My friend used to tell me that his RX-7 had a jet engine! -:) ...

I bought a new 1979 Mazda RX-7 with the rotary engine back in the day...had it for 10 years and put just under 200k miles on it...never had a problem. As long as you were judicious about changing the oil and filter every 5k miles, it was a very dependable car, and a lot of fun to drive. I'm now on my third Mazda, a 2014 Mazda 6. Between all three Mazdas, I've driven close to 500k miles on them and with the exception of a failed A/C compressor on a Mazda 3, I've had zero forced maintenance. Oil changes, tire rotations, and brake pads...that's about it.

My dad bought a 1970 Arctic cat panther with a wankle. This engine lasted till 1991 and it never gave an ounce of trouble! 6 kids this was used EVERY WKND during winter with 3 crazy sons it took a beating. So as an extender it might last for 30 yrs😊

Scotty, today learned today my car had swollen nuts. I must of had a stupid look on my face. Clerk took me out to the shop and the mechanic explained it to me. Ford focus has like a chrome tin covering enclosing the lug nut. Yes they can 'swell' and if you were out on the hwy you would be SOL trying to put lug wrench on. I will be looking for some chrome or stainless nuts.

I have a 2015 Mazda 3i with the 2.0 Engine, automatic. Had it Almost two years with no issues and it is VERY fuel efficient and fun to drive lol. I really enjoy my car :D

My 13 GS350 driver's window struggled the last inch up. I tried silicone spray. Didn't help all that much. I used the garage chain and door runner lube and it's been perfect!

I absolutely LOVE the rotary, and I'm glad to see it produced, even in this secondary way. My FC RX7 wasn't too fast by nowadays standards, but 8000 rpm and that fun chassis was an experience I'm so thankful I didn't miss.

As a semi truck driver it takes less than 8 minutes to fill up unless you have to wait. Pumps are set to 30 gallons a minute per side.

About the airbag thing, I was in a wreck one time in a Chevy suburban i think about an 01 model or so, but at that time it was only about 10 years old. Anyway the airbags did not deploy and nothing ever indicated there was a problem with them.

Hey scotty my 2012 mazda 6 check engine light turned on. Codes said it was the mass air flow and oxygen sensor, replaced it but light is still on.

I think the v6 firebird noise is coming from the accessory drive, idler pulley or the auto tensioner assembly.

I thought of this... Use the engine the to power a generator+ battery as efficient as possible and always have the instant torque. I think the mpg would be constant as the load on the generator would be constant unless the battery was completely charged.

Just bought Mazda CX-9 after driving Camry for real long time quality built is outstanding the motor suspension built is perfectly accurate, handling is spot on no disappointment there I can go on and on. Awesome car.
