The first time I used a timing light with a far oh, it was a 1966 Rambler classic. My dad was showing me how it was done! I still have the Craftsman timing light for that system. If I had to I could go out and hook up bad boy up to an older car and do it again right now. Sold Craftsman timing light you hooked up to the battery you pop the cap off of plug one you put a spring over plug one and then you put a clamp on the string and then put the cap back on. You mark the timing marks with a piece of chalk and you're ready to adjust the timing. Loosen the bolt on the distributor unplug the vacuum line for the vacuum advance , fire your timing light as the engine runs and turn the distributor until the lines lineup. Tighten the bolt on the distributor. It was a timing light again to make sure it hasn't moved. Turn off the engine unplug the timing light and reconnect your vacuum line to the vacuum advance. Once my dad showed me how to do it when I got my own cars I never needed to bug him to time the cars change points condenser distributor caps, plug wires , plugs or anything else until I came across on automatic transmission to rebuild. That was fun! I still have a timing light for the old school electronic ignition where are they just replace the points and condenser was an inducer in the distributor cap. They were higher voltage compared to the old points condenser system so that the old timing light wasn't safe to use. Even though there was more work with the old engines to maintain them how I miss those engines cuz you could actually see the damn things and work on them.

As the owner of a NA Miata I can say it was not Eric's fault the dipstick handle broke. After something like 25 years the plastic gets brittle and will snap if you look at it to hard. I barely grazed my hand past mine and it snapped just like happen to Eric. Charging to replace it would have be totally justified in this case, but I understand why did pay for it himself.
@NoWr2Run
@NoWr2Run 5 лет назад
In your mind it would have been JUSTIFIED for the owner to replace at their cost BUT THAT'S NOT THE REAL WORLD IN MOST CASES. I understand it's gets brittle, I own a 97Jeep Grand & I hate touching it in the winter months, fregin plastic crap breaks very easily in such cold conditions, like those small plastic vacuum lines, OH BOTHER. If you own a business & want returning customers, a good REPUTAION. you own up to YOUR PART AS ERIC ALWAYS DOES, FREAKIN ALWAYS. I would have let it go too but THE PUBLIC SUCKS ANYMORE SO IT'S BETTER TO THROW ANOTHER ONE IN & NOT DEAL WITH THE HASSLE OF SUCH THINGS, IT'S SMART BUISNESS. The customer MIGHT EVEN THINK DAMN JUST HAD IT FIXED NOW IT WON'T START ? HUUMMMM WONDER IF SAID MECHANIC DID SOMETHING TO IT WHEN I JUST HAD IT THEIR 2 WEEKS PRIOR ? SHIT LIKE THIS HAPPENS, I'VE SEEN IT FIRST HAND, UNFORTUNETELY.

@Cheepchipsable
@Cheepchipsable 5 лет назад
@@NoWr2Run Well if the handle is glued on and it still works, what's the problem? Probably pick up a second hand one cheap, or tell the owner and take it of his bill. He would only be entitled to a few dollars as compensation anyway due to the age of the item and it's condition. Things wear out and break down over time - you are not entitled to a brand new one, just one in the same condition as the one broken.

All 1990-1997 Miata engines (the 1.6 and 1.8 liter) use hydraulic lash adjusters no valve adjustments needed. Typical causes of the tick noise can be the car not being ran for some time, dirty engine oil, and lack of regular oil changes. I have 92 Miata myself owned for over 13 years now and mine usually makes the same noise around the time the oil needs changing. Take it out and romp it some, after a few runs up to 7,000 rpm that noise should go away. As for the blue power plug in the engine bay, Eric you used it for the intended purpose. Eric I would recommend that the owner of that miata to get the radiator hoses changed as well, the diamond pattern on the upper hose indicates that it is the original factory hose. Also if the top of the radiator has any hint of a brown or green color to it with a bright light shining on it replace the radiator ASAP. That part that you had to change is known as the CAS(Cam Angle Sensor) in the Miata community. It is known for causing a oil leak unless a quality viton o ring is used. As for the dipstick they all break lol, I have broken mine 2 times now. I get them from the Mazda dealer, the last one I bought back in 2013 was $19. The dealer even had it in stock that is how often those break. Great video as always Eric thank you.

I had 1990 Mazda 323 (Protege in US) with 1,6 (B6) engine, which had hydraulic lifters and sometimes some lifter was noisy, making the "tappet" knocking sound. If I restarted the engine, it was quiet again. Later it failed the MOT emissions test and reason was burned exhaust valve in cylinder no 1 (it had 16-valves). I suspect the hydraulic lifter probably caused the valve to burn but the shop didn't replace it after all, just the burned valve and gasket set + timing belt & tensioner. This MX-5 sounds even worse though, knocking sound doesn't seem to go away.

I had to do this exact same job on my '91 about 2 years ago. Forums refer to that part as a "CAS" = cam angle sensor, but yes, it is cam & crank. Part gave out @ 197K. Adjusting the timing is definitely old school, & I strongly recommend getting OEM if you plan on keeping the car. After a diag & changing the part, the car runs like a top. Was very happy to see this job on your channel. Cheers.
@chaddouglas2136

The ticking can be fixed, but the "lifters" are HLAs. No adjustment. Those HLAs clog up easily because the oil holes in them varnish up over time. A strong engine flush usually fixes this. I would do an oil change and replace with 1 qt 20w50 ad 3 qt ATF and then idle the engine for about an hour, then change with fresh oil. Also, if the oil is old, they can often be quieted by just a plain old oil change. If you want more details on the flush, go to the Miata Forum and search for "2TWISTY FLUSH." (I am 2twisty, FWIW)

The sweet sound of sticky lifters, super common on the first gen Miata's. Mazda Master Tech for 20 years and I really miss the old school setup of the 90's Mazda's. If you want to tackle the noise start by running an engine cleaner through it. The lifters are hydraulic and they gum up on higher mileage engines. Just switching oil brands can have an effect on the noise.

That's an NA series. The coils sometime heat up and die sending un-burnt gas into the cats..... bang. We have 2 NB Miatas (2001 & 2002) - the coils are over the center of the engine. Every week someone knocks on the door offering to buy them. Taken the motors out, fixed all the leaks and put back in. Fun to work on & run well. Bit like driving a shopping cart but fun as heck around corners....

It’s like we’re all looking over your shoulder and getting in your way. The compressor even chimed in at just the right moment. You’re indeed blessed. And that engine needs a flush and some Amsoil 5W-30 Signature oil change. Should free up those lifters if they are hydraulic. That thing almost sounds like a hit-and-miss engine from the 1920’s. Amsoil... not a sponsor. Thanks again!!!

Sounds like a modern 4-cylinder to me! I can't believe how noisy modern junk is today. Saw a '18 GM product a while back with 3k on the clock - just slightly more quiet than that Miata! 😣 That's a neat little device there - never seen one that wasn't part of a distributor assembly before. Just watched Cuba bust out her timing light the other day! Usually when I see more than one video on a similar topic, a related issue happens to one of my vehicles! Got the timing, & home-made noid lights ready ... 😂 Finally got my Ox diff for the Silverado after waiting 8 friggin weeks ... then what do I do? I bust a bolt off in the ring gear!! Forgot they were reverse threads. It was fresh in my mind when I ordered the diff ... 2 MONTHS ago!!! GRRR! Now waiting on 2 bolts to come that the eBay seller hasn't even shipped yet. I swear I can't win for losing over here!! What's another week out of 8? Busted it off on camera, too - got some creative editing to do if I want to save any audio from that one. Should've had this damn thing done by now!!! 😖 The bolts were turning like they were loaded with Loctite, so that threw me - usually my gun doesn't have enough power to overcome a bottomed bolt. Guess these were stretchy, torque-to-yield-type bolts with high tensile strength. Looked as if they were coming out! After one snapped, I attempted to run the 2nd bolt I started back and forth, and when I hit it with the impact to run it back in, ZING! It comes right out like nothing! Then the lightbulb went off ... 💡💡💡

And don't feel too bad about the dipstick; the handles are made of saltine crackers. They can break if you just look at them sideways. Of course you're on the hood for replacing it, but it wasn't an unexpected thing; I always had to remember to REMOVE it when working on anything back there. Also, those cam sensors LOVE to leak oil from the o-ring onto the heater hose right below it, so I often would wrap the hose with aluminum foil when I had that sensor out. The oil eventually degrades the hose and it will pop.

The car was probably driven only in summer time and has not been started since last year. Most likely the lifters will fill up with oil once it's driven a few dozen miles. That is IF it's equipped with hydraulic valve lash adjusters.

@gcfixitc9283 5 лет назад
90-97 are hydraulic...99 and up are the solid lifters. there was a bulletin for a sticking pressure regulator for the oil pump, that caused lifter noise.

Looks like a mini distributor! Probably cost like one too! Nice scope pattern, but hopefully the mechanical timing will always be in time. It still sounds like an old sewing machine, but it's on its way! Nice Job!

I own a 1990 Miata myself, the engine sounds fine. Always a scary sounding engine for most. Just from the sound though it might be a little low on oil lol.

Wonder did they use adjusters or did they have shims to adjust Miata valves? Thanks for clearing up how you knew that it was a 20amp fuse. Thought you might have shorted by accident. Yep, I have not used a timing gun since my first shaves too! Don’t even have a timing light any more. Don’t tell my Mrs but I might need one soon, if I acquire a certain project... Another great video Eric!

Eating cam and crank sensors is a Mazda thing. Very common on the Protege that uses a single cam sensor. That engine is on the loud side, probably needs the valves adjusted. They run forever though...dear brother has a '99 Protege that is staring down 300K.
