Hello guys!

This is a video on how to replace and diagnose your starter motor on mazda mx5 mk3 and 3.5
It's not a very nice job to be honest, but if you follow my instructions it should help a lot :)

Thank you for this. Please consider one small update to your guide: The early NC MX5 does not always have the oil cooler. This makes changing 2006/2007 (no guarantee on the year for all markets) starters a little less terrible. We just had the ST fuse start blowing yesterday and now we get one start from a fuse. Starter works great. It's a pity that the solenoid is part of the assembly because if it were accessible we couls replace juat the solenoid and not the whole starter. The car's on stands with front wheels off. I am allowing 3 hours, shooting for 2 and hoping for 1. Let's see how that pans out!

@@AlexTheGrumpyOne Got there, but it was an awful job. The top bolt was the thing that gave me the trouble. The rest of it easy. It got done in the end. Hopefully it lasts as I don't want to do it again!

I miss the cars I had in the 60's...and the cost of a starter... Miata sure engineered it to be difficult. I had an early 70's rotary engine Mazda sedan. It was sooo easy to maintain and repair...No chips needed.

I managed to replace the starter after someone else removed it. Butni cant seem to figure out where that cable with the bracket fits. Also what other little cable fits on that bracket? 4:07

How did you know the starter was bad?

Check the battery health. If good then check the fuse and relay for starter. What happens when you turn the key? Does it try and turn or nothing at all?

I know this is fairly late but can this cause the car not to turn over? My car will not start, I checked the fuse box and the starter relay fuse is blown out. I asked my father and he said it can be the alternator or starter. What do you recommend?

Have you changed the fuse/relay and it still not starting? It can be due to bad connection. Have you checked for any water leak on the passenger side under the glove box?

@@AlexTheGrumpyOne I checked the starter relay and it’s fine, I can turn the key over as if to start but no luck. The dash lights will turn on as well as lo other components but it won’t turn on. I thought the fob key wasn’t working so I used the key on wafer and still no luck turning it on. That’s the sign of the starter correct??

Yes should be. But first check the ground and positive supply to starter if the starter is getting battery voltage to the main power cable at that end and battery voltage at the switch cable on the starter side. Also check if the ground is good at the starter

On the contrary, I thought he spoke very clearly. Not only that, but these were the most clear instructions. He has a strong accent, but the inability to understand regional accents is not the fault of the one with the accent.
