I have a brand new mx-5 160, I confirm the sound is identical. wonderful I would say. I am impressed that the 184 version doesn't sound that aggressive
While the camera (and likely mic) is located right in between two vehicles, all MX-5 has the exhaust on the right side of the vehicle. You can actually see in the video that 2018's exhaust kinda pointing at the camera (and mic) better than 2019's which is kinda pointing away from the camera (and twice as much away from the center of the video frame). Thus, the 2018's exhaust will sound better while 2019's sound will sound weaker. In order to do the testing fairly, those two cars would likely have to be parked circularly (think of reverse triangle) where their exhaust is pointing to the camera at equidistance.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does someone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot the password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Kamdyn Leland i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
So I think the original sound better outside, but the facelift sounds better inside. I would definitely like the extra 20 bhp though. And a version 4 gearbox...
Great comparison, thanks for that! 👍🏻 The sound change comes due to a different muffler layout with the G-184 muffler which is similar to the OEM Bastuck muffler.
thank you so much for this. great test, very accurate sound. I prefer the upgraded 2019 sound. did you guys notice in car, it has like a supercharger whine? love it
The direct sound comparison is wrong in some way. I have done the exact same test and they both sound almost exactly the same (when both broken in properly). I expect you did the test when the 2019 model was not broken it completely, yet. The sound changes a lot towards the darker regions after the break in period. The mic position was also possibly not right, because in the later clips a lot more of the lower tones come through. Strangely in the later clips the 2018 model sounds weaker. I myself own the new model (RF) and I'm happy with the sound. Low in the rev rage it's even more bassy than I'd like it to be.
Not so much of a difference until you go past 6500 think have read. Ovbiousl the new engine is better. But as an owner of a 160 I´ll definetly keep it. Not loosing about 18.000 euros on the deal. Otherwise, there are companies like BBR that supposedly give an extra 17 hp to the 160 by chip tuning. Anyone knows about the reliability of such a mod?
Pretty sure nd1 power starts dropping at 6k whereas nd2 pulls to 7k and isn't just due to tuning, engine internals are upgraded. Stiffer camshaft, lighter pistons, etc. As well the power band has much more torque in the nd2. Nd2 will also be more reliable in terms of power train due to DMF. Is more efficient with fuel injection strategy. There's a whole list of improvements aside from larger powerband. Not to mention nd2 is better balanced internally so will produce power smoother. Altho I will say the nd1 feels more "Miata". It's such a hard choice to make
Honestly it's one of the cheaper sports cars out there. And more reliable. I had a 2008 NC mx5 for about 4 years. All I ever did was oil changes and tires. My wife ended up getting a 2002 Porsche Boxster S. On our test drive the gear selector valve ended up sticking or breaking, had it replaced before we bought it. Had the car for a year and had to change a water pump, a spark plug tube, the spark plugs, an alternator regulator, coolant, oil changes and not yet tires but soon. My mx5 was bought at 82k miles and was traded I'm at 136k. The wife got her car at 82k miles and is about at 90k now. Seriously, the Mazdas keep going and going. it's why you see so many first generations on the road still.
Looking forward to start a debate. I owned a mx-5 rf sport 160, and now I changed to a mx-5 roadster 184 anniversary. I love my new car, though the rf felt faster when accelerating from a stop. Somehow and miraculously it also felt like the lighter car. Any insight on this, anyone? I know that the 184 is the faster car 0 to 100 km/h, but is it possible that the 160 starts quicker?
The ND1 has a little more torque available at lower RPM's. The ND2 has a higher redline and more power up there. It's a trade off. I guess the ND1 takes off a little quicker from a dead stop, but the ND2 is praised for the track guys because they find the power band more usable and suitable for spirited driving. Which car do you enjoy driving more? PS. I love the Anniversary Edition, with the brembos and the recaros :)
they might mean 160ps, but yeah idk how anyone could get it wrong otherwise, like the video stating the 2019 is 184hp when it's advertised as 181hp by Mazda
One thing that both 2.0L doesn't have : the 1.5L sound, more raspy & metallic (like old roadsters) ! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jc7ZX1GToKc.html
