I like the design of the Mazda relief valve and the thin spring with rubber gasket at top lots of surface area and a tight seal it seems, but Frams media looks nicer but less of it. Nice Job, Pete. If I had to choose, I'd take the Mazda Filter, I think, even though I generally don't care for OEM filters. I do not like the bypass valve stuck in the leaf spring, too much chance for leakage. and the filters off my lawn mower look bigger than the filter cartridge in the Fram. Too bad because it looks decently made with good materials. I'll stick with my boss filters Mazda makes good engines. A filter that appears as new after 5,000 miles compared to one that shows clear evidence of moderate sludge/carbon trapped within its fibers and you prefer the one that looks like new? Do you understand the purpose of a filter?? A dirty filter is serving its intended purpose. A clean one is allowing impurities to remain suspended in the oil and continuing to circulate within the engine.
@Mark-rw3kw
@Mark-rw3kw Месяц назад
Looks to me like the end cap on the Fram Ultra is quite wide, restricting the amount of useable filter material. For a larger filter size on a different engine, that probably doesn't make any real difference, but for a filter this small it might matter. The Fram does appear to capture smaller particles, but one of the most important specifications is that a filter allows a certain rate of oil flow through the filter, which is hard to calculate.

I believe the FRAM has better filtration. Of course the Mazda (Tokyo Roki) filter would offer better flow characteristics. Maybe factory engineers felt that ample flow of filtered oil was more important than having the bypass at least partially open to get the required volume of lubricant to the moving parts. That's because the Fram Ultra blocks more particles (carbon buildup), which the Mazda filter lets through. Whether or not the Fram Ultra is too restrictive so that it might reduce oil flow below Mazda specifications, is the only possible drawback.

The Roki filters can be purchased without Mazda’s branding on them quite reasonably. I understand that the customer wants to take good care of his Mazda but at those intervals he can achieve the same protection for much less money than the Signature Series oil. The Signature Series is similar to Mobil’s top shelf long drain oils in that they only shine if you have an application that can run LONG oil drain intervals without detrimental effects.
