Lets crack open a couple filters to see why Mazda recommends the OEM so strongly for the ND2 engine.

Good inside look. I recently bought a cx5 and Facebook groups have been recommending going to the dealer for the OEM filter and use any synthetic 0w20 oil that’s on sale. Thanks for this video

Fillter mounts vertically so it doesn't need a ADBV.

This is why anyone who takes rando advice from YT is nuts, even if they use Amsoil..or is that just another reason to question their validity ?

Mazda does not have an anti drain back valve. It is not needed due to the position of the filter on the engine allowing it to remain full without it. I believe the main objective of the design is to insure ample oil flow at all RPM ranges. The filtration is a bit lower as well to insure that flow. You will notice Amsoil boasts about the 99% at 20 microns ( I believe) while great for removing particulate matter from the oil, creates a certain amount of restriction. The anti drain back valve falls into this category, too. If you are not racing or otherwise operating that engine at or near maximum RPM most of the time, the Amsoil filter or any other filter with ADV and higher filtration spec would not harm your engine. I had a Miata (ND1) and ran a few different filters on it. I opened them up and found no evidence of any damage caused by them. In the end I was using Tokyo Roki Mazda branded filters on it, just in case. I advise you to do the same. If you are running Amsoil it may be wise to not run it for 25,000 miles. I changed mine at around 5,000 miles, but my filters were very clean and I likely could have ran the oil a bit longer. Just my two cents here. Great video, and I wish you lots of fun with your MX5. They are great little cars!

Although I am not a fan of Amsoil, it looks like a superior high-end filter to me unless there is a problem I am not aware of. That is a full synthetic media that flows and filters better which 15 years ago was thought almost impossible to do. Everyone was convinced you either gained flow and lost filtering efficiency or vice versa.

Love how everyone thinks they are smarter than the Mazda engineers. Also, no one mentions Mazda filter bypass settings, which are different from third-party options.

I use the Fram 7317 size filter.

If you look at any synthetic oil filter media it will have less pleats and usually less material than a traditional filter because the media is far superior. I'd personally run the Purolator Boss filter but since Mann And Hummell purchased them they are a number of premium filters that appear to be the same such as Wix Racing Or Napa Platinum as well as others. I'd have to say I'd rather use them then the Mazda with no anti drain back valve and outdated media. Check some of the others out and as much as I don't like Amsoil it's a superior filter to the Mazda as well.

Amsoil never tells you who makes their filters like Mobil 1, which is a scam in itself. Bosch Premium is superior to both. Also, Castrol is proven better in high revenge engines. I wouldn't be punching holes in oil filters, you're just asking for problems...

Amsoil filters have been manufactured by various makers of filters over the years. Right now the appear to be made by Fram. They have a synthetic media backed by a wire screen mesh. Fram sells the same filter and it is one of their high line units. It used to be gold in color but these days it is black or dark gray. They made some changes. They are very good filters but their filtering efficiency has a negative effect on flow rate. I do not like the fact that they suggest users to run them for 20,000 miles plus. I’m a fan of a new filter for new oil… every time.

@@RetirednbrokeinPa That pretty much sums it all up, Fram garbage and the 20k scam. What they don't tell you after 3-4k the filter is running on its bypass.
