This instructor is first rate. So many are "go-go-go-just do it!" The grasp this instructor has on the background of why recruits might struggle is outstanding. This video should be mandatory watching for RIT instructors.

Now this is a good instructor. Clearly knowledgeable and willing to take the time to work with those that need extra help.

Wish my dept did this. They just black you out and throw you into it and wish you the best. Then when you fail they belittle you and tell you that you suck as a firefighter and need to work on your skills.

This is such an important breakdown of how to instruct high risk incidents by building confidence. I'm here by accident and I'm not even a firefighter. I am, however, a SWAT officer and instructor for high risk type events. If you build up your recruits and give them the confidence to succeed in a supportive learning environment, you will be surprised of the outcome. There is a time and place for simulated stress, and it comes after the recruits have mastered a skill. This is true for all first responder professions. Solid instructing. I'm gonna go find a cop youtube page now and get outta this firefighter one! lol

If all fire departments had instructors like Ric, we would have a lot more good people make a career out of firefighting. To many instructors think its time to show everyone how bad I am and not to instruct the recruit. One has to remember that recruit school is the first time some of these people have done anything like this. i wish I was younger and I would like to train under Ric.

Great instructor! Our first time doing the search maze, we did it on air, and blacked out, and the instructor is yelling hurry up. It was our first time being on air, never fitted for a mask, I couldn't breathe since my mask was the wrong size and leaking air. I hated the experience, I didn't learn anything from the training.

Similar experience. No instruction. Blacked out and on air. "Hurry up," "hurry up", "don't panic" . Lost my shit. Their reason....well...we throw you in deep to show that you CAN do it. Sure....after I lose my shit, blow through my bottle, and break down. Fire school is not the military. It also shows who the real instructors are....and who just likes to inflate their ego.
