True information is neither good nor bad inherently. I'm an INFP, and MBTI has been so useful. We're weird. And if we're not being weird, there's something wrong. I let my freak flag fly.
I sense MBTI to be more helpful for the more neurotic and turbulent individuals and Types. But the internet is so intermingled with the RU-vid 'community' and algorithm drivers, that it is hard to dissect MBTI on it's own from social media experiences.
I agree. For some people it won’t make _much_ difference reading up and learning about their type i think. Sometimes maybe even a direct negative impact. While for others the knowledge can be an essential tool. As an INFJ I reflect over my functions on a daily basis and don’t know how i would get by without knowing about them. I’d be probably be stapped down at a mental hospital by now. Lol no, but it is interesting. I also think “harm” can occur in the process of learning. Things that have to be incorporated correctly or mastered before it’s of any good use. But that’s just life :)
I appreciate your emphasis on taking individual responsibility for mental health and then engaging in research to discover what works best for you. Thanks Lindsey!
Hi Lindsay, this is not related to this video in particular, I've just recently discovered your channel, and I really like that you made a few videos about Carl Jung's original theory. I've been reading, and re-reading Psychological Types for more than a year, in the original language, and I think that he is often misunderstood by MBTI authors, even by the inventor of the MBTI. I don't think Jung would have approved of it. I really like your content alot and I hope to see more videos about Carl Jung's theory. Have you read the whole book? I love the beginning chapters, where he presents his analysis of important historic personalities such as Tertullian, Origen, Schiller, Goethe and Nietzsche. It's so fascinating, and scary, what he saw and how he thought. You can't compare any online typology author's analysis and explanations with Jung, they all come across so shallow and so schematic. I like your content alot. You and Theodora are my favourite youtube resources. Keep it up and all the best from Vienna, Austria
For me, mbti lead me to a self discovery awareness journey, before I didn’t stop to try and understand myself, but in my search in finding which type I am, I had to look deep, understand who I am to eliminate which type I’m not and confirm mine. And that’s what helped me grow as a person. It also helped me understand that we’re all not the same, and to be gentle with those who I don’t agree with. Also to not be hurt by their actions in some occasions.
Ive had such a mixed feeling about this, and honestly as an INTP, MBTI is actually helpful but the way the community just spells it out and creates unecessary stereotypes about it is harmful. It can lead to complicating your personality and making everything so complex but it does help cause it infact gives a reason for all of that
What I consider unhelpful is people completely ruling out certain enneagram type combinations when enneagram is more nurture, mbti more nature like that i can't be 9w8 cause i'm enfp
Thanks David! Yes was just editing the next one and have adjusted the music. I’m beginning to think my AirPods aren’t the best when adjusting volume in editing this sort of thing always seems to happen 😵💫
I would say the issue is what you do with the information. Do you want to open or close your mind with MBTI ? If great for opening your mind about the POSSIBLE inners working of yours or others people mind. When it becomes bad, is when you use MBTI as a way to gain certainty to confirm your own bias towards yourself and others. For me, MBTI give a load of imagination about what i could be (stepping outside of my INTP type, and not being trapped as a caricature of myself) or what other could be. As an autistic INTP, i feel i can finaly give meaning to the behaviors of others that didn't make sens for me, or give a more tolerant and fair judgement to others behaviors. Others works differently inside, and they have others priority. It's not like people don't care at all for what's more important for me (seeking truth), it's just that others stuffs are above their list, they are not sacrificing "researching the truth" for absolutely no reason.
Personally, i think whether mbti is helpful or harmful, depends on two things. The ability to attribute the correct personality type (like always, a wrong diagnosis could be incredibly harmful). Thereby, the ability to diagnose oneself effectively depends largely on the mental state of the individual, and which confirmation and selection biases they will employ. Like any tool, the problem isn’t as much the system. It is how one uses it. A car can be a great tool to get from A to B, but it can also be a great weapon in the wrong hands.
On a little bit of a sidenote, i believe that usually the intj are a little predisposed to fall victim of mbti. That is they are very values minded, and they are largely unaware of their inability to connect the dots when the subject is themselves, as embracing a new identity requires letting go of an old identity. An intj may have an idea about oneself like anyone in childhood, that may fall victim in duress to maintaining internal harmony at all cost. Fortunately, no 20 minute test can tell you who you are. That is for you to find out, but finding out who you are is a process in a forest of heuristics and biases. Also to employers, right now it has 0 use. Simply put, it took me 45 days as entp to finally say i’m an entp (not intp). That system is too slow. As i have an esfp older sister, she isn’t really into self-improvement, and i get that.
I wholeheartedly agree with this one. There are times when I do refrain introducing someone about MBTI when they're simply not ready. I, on the other hand, sought out to understand the tool at the same time as I was for myself.
Sure, I hear this. Kind of like if someone’s a 2001 Ford Mustang but they type themselves as a Durango and purchase a Durango carburetor for a replacement. I guess the thing is though, how many people are likely to purchase their own part and actually change it themselves? And even if they did, thing is probably not going to work or turn on vs explode on the highway. Most people like the idea of type, and possibly of being a Durango. But few use that information to actually do much of anything. Simply being a car on the highway carries enough inherent risk, akin to our humanity.
@@InternetLiJo EXACTLY, even though i am an entp and that contains way more detail than i would have thought of, but its always funny to see that. I would just be like yeah there has been incidents on the highway, and especially my example involving a terrorist attack on the royal family here in NL back in the day with a car trying to hit a bus, and crashing into a people mass killing a few individuals. Another great example. Poker. Life is the pokeriest poker game of all. Unlike poker, where you can at least see the hold cards and the community cards, but cannot see what other people have; life is mostly about gaining insight in what cards YOU have. Just like in poker, you don't know the two cards of the other person, but you can maybe if you are lucky see one card of your hold cards yourself, and you don't know how many cards other people can see of themselves and of other people. Even the community cards for the most part are yet to be dealt. In Texas Holdem' -You don't see what other people have -You don't know whether they can see what they have -You can maybe if you work hard see what cards you have -You surely can't see what cards other people have -You are not completely sure what the community cards are (facts on the ground + history+rules of the game) In other words, loads of uncertainty. I do love analysing a bit of uncertainty. Maybe more like stud or draw poker, but that would go into very detailed analogy territory and many people are largely unaware that different games in poker but Texas Holdem' exist.
You know what though? I think MBTI is more nonsensical than not. The whole thing. We humans are complex and constantly evolving based on circumstance, experience, etc. There really is no set in stone personality, it's more of a fluid thing that can and will change over time.
The Human word is "nonsense," the idiot word is "nonsensical" as that is a VERY redundant application of te suffix "ic" and "al" where nonsense is already the quality and state of being not senile(sound~reasonable). Stop using your mouth as means to breathe and then yoir brain will have better bloodflow to support your mind in the process of discerning the value of words~language. "non·sense /ˈnänˌsens,ˈnäns(ə)ns/ noun 1. spoken or written words that have no meaning or make no sense. "he was talking absolute nonsense" Similar: balderdash gibberish claptrap blarney guff blather blether rubbish hogwash baloney tripe drivel gobbledygook bilge bosh bull bunk hot air eyewash piffle poppycock phooey hooey malarkey twaddle dribble rot cobblers codswallop cock stuff and nonsense tosh double Dutch flannel waffle havers garbage flapdoodle blathers wack bushwa applesauce bellywash bunkum tommyrot cod gammon Or, in idiot: "non·sen·si·cal /nänˈsensək(ə)l/ adjective 1. having no meaning; making no sense. "a nonsensical argument" Similar: meaningless senseless illogical unmeaning Opposite: logical rational 2. ridiculously impractical or ill-advised. "a tax that everyone recognizes was nonsensical" Similar: foolish insane stupid
Gossip is always harmful, MBTI and the field of psychology are just noise of such gossip. I changed my image from anime face to my actual body, it has an 8-pack and can still lift about 3 times its weight(which is currently 174.6lbs). I am not smart but my body is really good at lifting stuff(and other bodies, which are easy and fun to toss around). It's also pretty good at sprinting but not very good at prancing...I want it to prance more. Why aren't you amd your husband prancing with me? . . . I have no friends, that is the INCEL and Robot way 🤖
@@dayoffnowYes. I call it "office/official mode" vs. "at home/won't bother mode". There's a time and a place for both. I guess it confuses my neighbours, it's a pretty wide range. They'd have a hard time describing my style 😂
@@brocklytodd5317 I only know how to poop... and how to lift stuff. Dressing is too complex, that is why my body is mostly neked in this display image...
The nose is for breathing so mouth is not for breathing. Your frequent gasping is reflection of a starving nervous system, even though your forehead is very pretty(prettieness, similar to my abilty to lift stuff, isn't capable of solving all problems). 😘😘😘Linday's forehead😘😘😘
