Not defending the goofball, but I will say 15 years is more than enough time to be an expert in almost anything and that included martial arts. Expertise and mastering something are very different. Most people wont master a martial art in 15 years unless they live and breathe it. They all seem great at force pushing people but I have yet to see one that can force hold someone up. Love you man. Echo chambers aren’t just healthy/unhealthy. I’m gonna make the full-throated claim that if you refuse to engage with alternative ideas, your ideas are 100% nonsense that can be dismissed out of hand. You HAVE to at least entertain skepticism or difference of opinion for your opinion to be taken seriously. If you refuse to engage with any criticism, you can dismissed as BS without further investigation. Full stop.
@IrishColin
@IrishColin 11 дней назад
I have to disagree with the full stop aspect of what you said, I agree mostly with what you said but there are exceptions. For instance, I don’t need to engage with people that believe that all these magic woo-woo powers are real but by the logic of what you said it means my saying it’s fake nonsense can be dismissed as utter bs out of hand. I know it’s an extreme example but that example is exactly why a full stop isn’t exactly fitting here. Like I said, I agree 99% with what you said because you should always within reason entertain both sides of something before forming an opinion about it. The operative word though is within reason rather than always full stop.

dude another insane video. People should share opinions and ideas more, a be respectful about it. If we show the young how to communicate respectfully then the future of society would be bright. Echo chambers in real life or on the internet of this era are unavoidable. If we wanna make the distance we do it together, rarely alone. So we are gregarious and will tend to join like-minded people. We must not forget the respect no matter how far we've come along the road. Other groups might have a better idea than yours and you might miss it. Anyhow, I feel like you're putting great effort in staying grounded and not let the internet life get to your head. Thats a really good and spicy question of the day rob! I think being for, or against echo chambers menas you arenxt thinking hard enough. The question is more complicated than right or wrong. If you take a moment to genuinely think about it we all end up in our own echo chambers at some point. While saying you support echo chambers sounds bad, the truth is we like the people who affirm our ideas and disprove ideas we disagree with. I think that echo chambers are naturally occuring simply because someone is right, and someone else is wrong. For example, we all know 1+1=2. Someone proposes that 1+1=3 we all shun them for being wrong. Now whoever believes 1+1=2 stays in their echo chamber, and whoever believes 1+1=3 stays in theirs. And both sides will pedal their reasons for it, but who's wrong? Well with martial arts we can test right and wrong. Arguements about numbers however, are arguements about language. I find arguements about language dumb, when the meaning behind the language is whats important. Not the words. #2Isn'tRealItCan'tHurtYou

Echo chambers are one of the worst things to be involved in because you end up being so certain you’re right and everyone else is wrong without ever having even viewed all the evidence of a situation or idea. It would be like a court case where only the prosecutor or only the defense got to state their case and then thinking you know if the person is innocent or guilty based on that one side’s testimony alone.

From a outside perspective, even his usage of the word "akasha" seems weird. (I looked it up on wikipedia) Echo chambers are very limiting, even if we all have them to a greater or lesser degree. If he changes his mind regarding taking you up on your suggestion he would at least show a willingness to both let people in and out of his own. And that is just very basic wisdom, something a teacher of teachers should easily grasp.
@HiddenStr3ngth
@HiddenStr3ngth 2 месяца назад
Echo chambers exist in tiers as well. On a certain level, like 99% of people exist in an echo chamber. Then you can put yourself into a smaller and smaller and smaller one. But I would say it's more about basic mentality. Even if you are technically in an "echo chamber". Most people cannot take in information objectively, process it and make adjustments. All hinges on your ego and entrenched belief systems resisting it no matter what. Some people go through that battle with some issue, and process it eventually, many don't. Even extremely simple, factual information with all the data and evidence you can ever want. Depending on the topic, if it's something that hits on a strong belief you have built in, it will be violently rejected and fought. (mentally) There are some good examples that will work on most people out there, though I don't want to mention it, precisely because of what I say above. But yeah, it would be nice if people can simply be presented with data, look at it objectively, verify if necessary and make adjustments to their lifestyle and beliefs. Without having to battle their egos for decades. Echo chambers will always exist, if the core mentality doesn't change, and awareness of individuals.

In regards to echo chambers, I think they're all just derived from a desire to feel safe and comfortable, and the tighter the echo chamber, the more likely it is because of the bigger our insecurities. We all want to be around people that think like we do, it makes us feel safe and comfortable, and I think that's healthy. If we're confident with who we are and our beliefs, we usually have no problems conversing with those who think differently than us and hearing outside opinions from time to time, and though we spend the majority of time with similar people but we're not uncomfortable when the situation arises to discuss things that our contrary to our own views. If we feel fragile and insecure about ourselves or the world that we've created in our own minds, that's when I think we shut ourselves out from any outside opinion, and though being with like-minded people isn't inherently bad, we stick strictly to those people in order to not expose our own fragility. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. Keep up the great work!

I think echo chambers cause people to have their ideas reinforced in such a way that they become part of their identity. They stop truly challenging themselves to look at other perspectives or new ideas. Also, confirmation bias becomes such a inherent practice they no longer recognize that when they are doing it. A person becomes concealed in their comfortable, reassuring views which makes it harder or maybe even impossible to see another point of view or take in new information and/or evidence that could help shape their perspective.

Echo chambers are obviously bad, and their danger is increasing daily. We had Terrance Howard on Joe Rogan, for instance, and due to the "echo chamber" presentation that Joe offered his acting friend, he needed a follow-up podcast with Eric Weinstein just to "set the record straight." I'm glad there was pushback, but it was not forceful enough to dissaude the already poisoned viewers who took what Terrence said and thought, "Hey, that 1x1=1 thing is wrong! 1x1=2 is correct! Good job terry!" Look at any science youtuber trying to debunk those claims, and they're getting tribally attacked by Terrance Howard and Joe Rogan fans. And what's worse is that Joe presents his podcast as real people having real debates. "We're just asking questions.". Nah, that's BS. Joe platformed a rich maniac in the midst of a crisis. Those are bus-stop ideas you get from an alcoholic hobo. 1x1=2. Yep. We're crushing it. Real debate with the ability to mend in the middle is going the way of the dinosaur, because compromise doesn't get clicks. Facts are not valued either -- any claim otherwise could just be shot down as fake news. Content creators of a size have a responsibility to be open with their viewers. The whole "I'm just asking questions" Joe Rogan pulls is quickly becoming bad-faith as an approach to arguments. But if you're too harsh to your debate partner, it becomes an excuse for them to claim "personal attacks". So now the person and the facts are off the table in 2024. Normally, a real debate would include a 3rd neutral party. Someone who can speak to facts or keep pacing controlled. Also, you need someone to keep the pace going when it DOES devolve into personal attacks. Historically, newspapers, TV, and radio couldn't really do it. And now RU-vid is following. You're good btw, lol. Not saying you don't take a good faith approach. But my relationship with RU-vid as my primary media is becoming tough, just due to how poisoned the ground has become. I know we can do better.

Not commenting on that specific situation, with Howard. Rogan has been biased and slimy for a very long time though. To a degree, most podcasters are, especially popular ones. Rogan is especially bad with anything he has bias towards(e.g. diet/food, weed). Rare times when he has made the mistake to invite someone he can't crush down, he would go back on things he said so many times, in future podcasts. Act nicer and agreeable while having a podcast with someone, then few podcasts later he'd be crapping on them lowkey. Do everything he can so people forget X podcast existed. Keep inviting quacks that fit his bias over and over again, even the same person many times. Blatant scammers and grifters included.

I think its okay to have "echo chambers" so long as you've had the life experience and knowledge to curate your fact and fiction. As well as being able to step out when a new topic arises to get other views and genuinely compare them with your own. When it comes to consuming martial arts media I definitely have an echo chamber and while I'll respect other people's thoughts and ideas I'm not gonna sit down and have a conversation about "magic" or "chi" in fighting. Constantly "debating" or what have you over something like a "death touch practitioner" is just asking for a headache that will lead into hearing the same tired spiel that they all end up giving. That said I thank you for giving your time and energy to bring some of these conmen to light as there are many people who have probably found this channel and began to search deeper into many of the common tactics these guys use to deceive.

I think echo chambers are dangerous places. A great public example of an echo chamber is the flat earth society. Everyone in there is hyping each other up and this leads to crazier ideas. It’s important to step outside your bubble and get different perspectives. I’m currently in the USAF was enlisted and now I’m an officer so that experience broadened my perspective by interacting with all kinds of people. But my world really opened up when I started BJJ. Because it got me to talk to non military folks from all walks of life. While it is fun to be in a place that makes you feel like you’re right it’s a lot more rewarding to learn more about others.

The echo chamber thing is interesting because i dont think its possible to avoid. After a hard day of work you dont go yell at strangers in the street, you talk with friends or people in similar groups. So the echo chamber naturally forms. Knowing this, its your duty to purposely make yourself uncomfortable by seeking out different ways of thinking and look at them fairly. I was at an anarchist bookfair and a old black activist spoke. His take on lgbt issues was pretty close to the average opinion there. But he kept stressing with the audience to be patient with the old folks who don't understand your pronouns. That even though they come from a different time and place, they shouldn't be cast off for commiting a current day faux pas. It was a great "recognize your echo chamber" challenge to the mostly young, radical audience

And the cycle continues with their son, you can tell these people are the type to absolutely never think they’re in the wrong and they use aggression as a form of winning an argument. Seems like they’re just used to bullying and throwing tantrums to get their way.

Echo chambers can be dangerous, in my opinion, but i also think there are levels. As an example is if you are learning boxing, and your coach teaches yoy how to jab, your echo chamber is you and your coach. It should be this way for a while until you have mastery. Then, you can seek other ideas as youll come from a place of confidence of your own technique. Contrast this we the wcho chambers we see in politics, for example, and its easy to see there are very few willing to listen and understand the opposing side. This devolves quicky and we have the environment we have now in the US. All in all, i think there is some nuance to it.

The guy who claims that he can "defabricate" a person's mind with "akashic magnetism" while fleecing gullible people out of their money to "teach" them the same describing anyone else as having a pathological self-aggrandizing superiority complex is a simply laughable level of irony.

A narcissist generally acusses others of the things they are guilty of , so everything he accused you of is exactly who and what he is , a real master would welcome your questions and if with respect , or just simply brush it off without a care...but you triggered him and he has to back peddle to defend his hurt ego

Reading through the comments, and then got distracted by your 'fist shaking' mime...... Ive been training Judo, for nigh on 43 yrs now, and trust me when I day, I'm in no way an 'expert', but then again,what would I know. Saying that, I spent many many years fully subscribing to the 'mythical Jefi space warrior' type of thing. However, I then came to my own conclusion that it doesn't exist. However much I wanted it to. Ditto so much. What I have learnt is that the basic ls, done well can easily confuse the uninitiated into a belief in mystical abilities; well...the one time, I came very close to believing that thought was when a frirnd of mine threw me for a perfect, text book ippon. I was attempting to be more aggresive and less defensive, and he timed it perfectly. The one, and so far only time Iver been thrown in a 100% ideal ippon. By all means plenty have scored ippon against me during shiai,but this one guy was so real. There was a genuine 'wtf just happened to me' buzing roubd my head. As for the i dividual in this vid, I am disivlinrd to buy into his belief system, not because I have anything inherentky against it, but rather, I am not sufficientky financially secure to spend my hard earned on someone who's mrthods appear to me to be a touch doubtful. Besides which I do find his attitude to this channel inappropriate to say the least. A question is a question, and I prefer it when folk treat a question as a question. 💜🌶🧠🌶💜

I suspect that the term "echo chamber" is implicitly critical and a charge that is only ever thrown at other people. I don't think I've ever head someone bragging about their own echo chamber (Oooh, my echo chamber is the echoiest!), and it generally amounts to a complaint that "those other folks aren't listening to *me*." I personally like talking with people who have things to teach me, but not everyone who disagrees with me does. Some people just haven't thought things through yet, for any of a variety of reasons. Other times people just aren't interested in any kind of critical dialogue. And I am sure there are other cases too. I guess my question for you Rob, would be what you actually stand to gain by claiming someone else is in an echo chamber. Is there a response to that question that advances the discussion, or is it really just posturing? I mean this respectfully. I am just thinking it through with you. BTW, I enjoy your videos.
@McDojoLife

Have nothing to gain but an open dialogue and conversation on the subject. No posturing needed 🤷🏻‍♂️ Keep in mind my question was about echo chambers in general not about the echo chamber the people I discussed were involved in.

For Any idea to be worth sharing with others it has to pass the test of opposition. Its the very first test when learning for safety. I think I can jump a bike a certain way but I ask people first because I want to be sure I don't wipe out right? Without such scrutiny at bare minimum the idea isn't worth more than fantasy. Write great fiction with it.
