Here’s a little short showcase of the notable differences in noise level between two gorgeous classic jets; the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and MD-80 series aircraft. The MD-80 series jets are equipped with Pratt and Whitney JT8D-217/219 engines while the DC-9s are equipped with the older and louder JT8D-9 engines.
JT8D-1 through JT8D-17 engines require Stage III hushkits to remain compliant with ever-stricter FAA noise regulations, whereas the JT8D-200 series (-217/-219 series JT8Ds) are built to be Stage III compliant from the start.
Notice the differences in pitch between the two idling engines, as well as the major difference in the prominent thundering/ripping/crackling sound of the DC-9 versus the less thunderous MD-80.
The two aircraft in the video are:
- XA-UPS, a 53 year old DC-9-30F operated by Aeronaves TSM.
- N837US, a 32 year old MD-88F operated by USA Jet.
Enjoy!
