@@thecaynuck4694 for example the F135 engine on a fighter jet and PW J58 have very nice sounds too pretty much all pure jets and low bypass turbofans sound like music to my ears. There are high bypass turbofans that have a sweet sound too such as the Trent 800, CFM56, CFM Leap 1A, GE passport, GE CF34, CF6, GE90, Trent XWB, BR725, GENX, and GE9X.
Nothing beats the bone rattling rumble from a JT8D especially the older revisions. Always enjoyed watching 727's take off. This JT8D looks and sounds like it was neutered with a shush kit :/
I do know that the 727/737 originals had JT8D 15/17 something like that and the MD 80 has the JT8D-200 series engines which had a higher bypass ratio than the 72/73 engines.. I prefer the crackle of the older gen JT8Ds its like comparing sausage to bacon.. Sausage is good but I'll take bacon any day O.o...
+Comet Ghost The MD-80s use the JT8D-200 engines which are Stage III noise compliment ,The Hush kit is a Stage IV Hush kit. Some MD-80s have them already. But all won’t need Stage IV Hush kits probably not until the 2030s.
I like the JT8D sound because it sounds more real and when it takes off as it flies up towards the sky, it creates more thunderous sounds. That sort of sound is phenomenal!
I worked at McDonnell Douglas on those aircraft when they were new on the flightline and by far my favorite engines or the Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219s The BMW Rolls-Royce BR 715 engines you could almost have a conversation standing right next to them they were that quiet he couldn’t do that with the JT8s
As far as today's engines are concerned I'd say the BR715 is still a relatively loud engine for a narrow bodied jet. Have only heard the JT8D-200s but they were so loud it was ridiculous!
The JT8D in this video is not the same one found on the 727 or DC-9. Those earlier engines were far louder than the updated version found on the MD-80.
is it possible that you bass boosted those takeoffs to make them sound louder than they actually are? Just curious. Because the loud, earrape like sound happened very suddenly
Old camera had a pretty poor mic tbh, if I ever get the chance to record the sound differences on the 717 and MD80 you bet your ass I'll do another video with better sound quality!
JT8D wins hands down. I have always loved flying on 727's and DC-9's, especially in the rear of the aircraft when the captain would perform a power back. Music to my ears.
I love the sound and roar of a JT8D, but this particular 8 was ruined by those hushkits... In this video, the BR715 wins, as the sound of spooling up is unbeatable, and it may be quiet, but it is naturally quiet. The JT8D is supposed to set off car alarms, but this one, like mentioned before, has been neutered. Give me a JT8D-5/7/9/11/15/17 without hush kits any day of the week, but like I said, my vote goes for the RR BR715
Had a good feeling you'd go with the Rolls Royce's, I remember your video on the DC-9 fan club on Facebook of a 717 departure. Love the sounds of the BR-715s on 717s from the start up all the way to shutting down!
Screw modern. Modern engines are quiet and princess-like. Listen to a JT8D in real life and you will not only hear the loud thunderous roar, but you will also feel it. Just like a loud clap of thunder. You can feel the rumble. Engines nowadays don’t even set off car alarms. Modern engines are boring and not impressive whatsoever.
