McLaren 750S or Ferrari 296 GTB - which is the greatest supercar of our time?
Both cost around £240,000 each, and while the Ferrari has the bragging rights thanks to a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engine working with an electric motor for a total of 819bhp, the McLaren actually has the better power-to-weight ratio. Its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is good for 740bhp, but with a carbon tub and no battery pack it weighs literally hundreds of kilos less than the Ferrari.
To find out which is best, we put them head-to-head, on road and on track - and because this is the UK, in all weathers too! Top Gear’s Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, and Associate Editor Jethro Bovingdon, are your referees…

While McLaren does make a road car with hybrid powertrain in the shape of the Artura, it's not in the same league as the 296 GTB. The 750S successor needs to be a hybrid to be on par with the Ferrari.

I own a white 296 GTB which I personally really like the look of. It's a car that really looks much better in person. I've owned mostly Porsches before this including the new GT3 RS and GT4 RS. What I like about the 296 is how much fun it is on the road even at normal speeds. You feel the torque from very low down in the RPM because of the hybrid system and it sounds awesome all the time. The GT3 RS sounds amazing when the revs are high which is also where most of the torque is, but you have to be going very fast with the gearing to experience that (much like what they mentioned in the video about the McLaren). Really it belongs on the track. The GT4 RS on the other hand sounds amazing all the time but doesn't have the feeling of speed of the Ferrari. They're all different cars and so are we. Trying to say one is best is very difficult because everyone has different preferences that change all the time. I hope McLaren have a handle on the reliability issues they've had in the past. As people have mentioned it's really hurt the resale value which is a big factor with how much these cars cost and those two factors are why I've never owned one, but I still hope to one day.

You say of the reliability issues on McLaren yet a i watched a video on hear saying Porsche are on paper worse than McLaren in 2022, personally my views are McLaren are such a new company they are only getting traction on what we should be expecting re reliability and quality which to be frank the Italians and British are the best at, but foke will bring up Lucas or Fiat which is the likes of a bad pub convo in the 80's, McLaren are on another league now and long may it continue.

@@sresto7943 I was talking about the reputation of McLaren and their reliability, not how they are today. It’s so hard to gain back trust when you get a reputation like that. I think that reputation hurts used values which is a big factor when buying cars like this. Porsche’s reliability overall is hurt by Panamera and Cayenne but I’m pretty sure their sports cars are generally pretty reliable. The Porsche 718 is the most reliable car overall according to JD Power 2024.

If you want a McLaren try Thorney Motorsport they fix known issues before resale & only sell good cars..bought a 2017 570gt from them with only 6800miles on it end January..only issue Ive had is it wouldn’t find key one day but reset in handbook pretty easy..had a 911 992 Carrera S before..the McLaren is night & day a better drive than the 911 & surprisingly more comfortable on crappy British roads👍

Excuse me while I dream of a parallel universe where this beautiful Ferrari is named 508 GTB, using a 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 revving to 10,000rpm with a no-plug hybrid system to gently supplement torque while running ancillary systems off the battery instead of the motor like the GMA T.50. @@GearzMonkey arguable? The 458s calling card was its engine. Since that duel, the 458 vs the 12c people have been saying the 458 is a more emotional and sensory car, the 12c was always faster but more boring. Because mclaren cared about performance not emotions.

@@km6832 Maybe I wasn't clear in my original comment. The 458 was such a great car that the only way you could match or beat it is through performance. So I don't blame McLaren for chasing numbers and performance headlines seeing it was their first supercar since the F1 and were trying to get into the supercar market for the long term. So, based on what they had to work with, they did a great job because here we are today. They were never going to beat Ferrari back then, but now it seems they have.

296 is the true successor to the 458 I think. The first in the new line and a huge jump over it's previous generation. It brings in a new design language, tech, performance and almost everyone seems to blown away the first time they drive it.

Both amazing cars. 750S is way nicer looking (and I'm a Ferrari owner saying that). I've been in a 296 and the speed is breathtaking. The only other car I've been in that blew me away was the 720S and I know the 750S is that much better.

This is the comparison I've been wanting to see! I've always felt comparing the 296 to the Artura wasn't right because they're really two different classes of car, this is a much closer comparison even though the 750 isn't a hybrid.

SF90 Stradale and Senna comparison doesn't make any sense, one's a daily drivable car with awd benefit and another is a road legal track car. So, SF90 Stradale and 750S makes more sense, they are similar type of cars and remember LaFerrari was/is more expensive than P1.

2 best supercars on sale right now, for different reasons. 750s is a way to own a hypercar for supercar prices, 296 looks just so exotic and beautiful, about as fast as anything on 4 wheels can get and listen to that engine!! Not to mention achieving this performance while sitting in luxury.

750S is not much new, 70% of the components are from the 720S. In fact, 720S is that car you're talking about and not the 750S.

The 720S was a way of getting hypercar performance for supercar price when it came out in 2017. But they did so by lying about how much power it actually had, even though it was already supposed to be more powerful than the competition. It had headlines saying it was quicker than the P1 on track. Fast forward to now and there are a few cars that can do that. The SF90 Stradale and Tesla Plaid are ways to get hypercar performance for supercar price.

This review actually impressed me...right at the end. It seems EVERYONE in Europe is banging the hybrid gong. I am sure there is a lot of pressure (read money) flowing into car review businesses. The result is: "Wow!, it's great." But here we have an IC winner. Honest and wonderful. Besides, here in the U.S. the Ferrari looks like Bozo the clown.

If i had to choose from an f8 or 720s i'd of course go with th f8, maybe even a 488. If i had to choose 750s or 296 i'd go with the 750s because i don't see any benefit to the hybrid stuff, now between 750s and f8 that's the real tough choice but the 296 is left out, it just doesnt belong in the bunch

Always great to see Jethro doing a car test (in the UK). Most memorable tests of his for me the Bugatti Chiron, the McLaren P1/Porsche 918 Spyder (around the same track, 9 years ago...gulp) and the Litchfield tuned Nissan GTR. If it was my choice SF90 and the McLaren 750S in the Lottery win garage, not the 296, it reminds me of the very American looking 2nd gen. Ford GT40 (at certain angles). Enjoyed the video, thank you both.

picking up a lot of GT40 feels from the Ferrari (sacrilege, I know) but that Gulf-esque livery at the front end and side-on view of the rear, between the wheel arch and the spoiler, very old-school GT40 vibes. I'd take the McLaren though, with the P1 seats.

@@Bug4life and this is garnered from your own personal ownership or the usual 'I saw it on youtube' or you got it direct from a friend who knew somebody who walked the dogs for a McLaren owner and he had said .... the new kids on the block (McLaren) where in the spotlight 10 years ago because gremlins in other cars wasn't news. Time has proven that the McLarens are reliable. First hand knowledge from me is that 992's have hugh issues that has even led to car being rejected and refunded as for the 296 .. believe me, visits to the dealer to sort issues out is frequent as along with all that wizardry comes issues.

And guess what, it's not only me, others can see through the biased verdict, if it was a 765LT then the verdict would have been quite suitable but 750S, which has just 30% new or updated components over a 720S, just doesn't stand a chance against the 296.

Umm, yeah that's quite true. The 750S ain't an entirely new car, it's just the updated version of the 720S with added bits and features. Maybe if we'll have a track version of the 750S like 800LT (just saying) or something then that might beat the 296 else in this comparison, I kinda think the Ferrari should've won.

I want to see these 2 against the GMA T50...Just to get a direct comparison between the "modern recipe" against the "GMA recipe". It would also be super interesting to get some performance data comparisons even though the GMA isn't supposed to be about numbers. Completely different price brackets but still be very interesting from a technical angle. Love to see a roll race between them.

In usual mclaren fashion, this one also is like 750hp at the wheels. Way over 800hp at the crank, therefore superior power/weight.

Crazy to think that there is also the SF90 that tops everything. Not a Ferrari fanboy but Ferrari is approx. 10 years ahead of its competition and it all started with the 458.

Mclaren has been far ahead of Ferrari for a while, when the mclaren mp4 12c came out and was already superior in every way to the 458. They will always be one step ahead. Go see their current model and you will find that the sf90 is not the most exiting.

@@cargx44 as I said I'm not a Ferrari fanboy at all and exactly for that reason it's even harder for me to admit that Ferrari is ahead of every other constructor. The only manufacturer who can keep up with Ferrari is Porsche but they don't build the type of cars Ferrari does so they play differently. Sales numbers by the way, confirm that. Look at where Ferrari stands compared to McLaren. So hard this might sound but the free market is the fairest judge there is. And sorry you can't tell me that the mp4 was better than the 458. The 458 has set the benchmark and so far its never been bested. That's why even though way more 458 where built compared to the 12c, the 458 costs at least 40% more on the used market.

@@rmr5184 You are quite right, ferrari is also a brand with a much longer and richer history than mclaren. It is a reference and the sales figures do not lie. The 458 has been talked about and was of great importance in the world of supercar. Being a fan of mclaren (especially the 12c I could try in spider), I must admit that ferrari is very strong just like porsche, but mclaren is still ahead on some point such as weight or driving (just like ferrari).

"10 years ahead of the competition" is something nobody but a fanboy would say. With the exception of the SF90, all modern Ferraris are 10 years BEHIND the competition. Every single modern Ferrari you can think of, from 488 to F8 to 812 to LaFerrari, is outperformed by the equivalent Lamborghini, Porsche, and McLaren. All while costing way more than said faster equivalents. The only Ferrari that doesn't have a terrible price to performance ratio is the SF90.

@@cargx44 okay so we can agree that Ferrari and McLaren build some of the greatest cars on the planet:) Let's hope they continue driving innovation in order for us to see more incredible cars like that in the future. By the way, when the 296 was launched I completely disliked it! I had the chance to drive it and it proved me wrong in every aspect. Even the sound surprised me positively.

the v6 in the 296 is not a problem at all... but the lack of connectivit is, the hybrid is also a revolution for me, the perfect car for me would be some v8 v10 or v12 but with no torque just like f1 engines, small displacement, much revs, and baybe 500hp, with the torque been just provided with the eletric motor. would be clean to the enviroment, light weight, and fun...

This test should have been between 296 and artura not the 750s. 750s is more comparable to an F8.

One thing that a lot of these reviews fail to mention is the cost to own. While this particular Ferrari is a hybrid and as a result might depreciate more than other Ferraris (looking at the SF90 as a reference), it is still going to hold its value infinitely better than the McLaren will. The McLaren will lose half of its value in 5-10 years, which is great for people like me who have dreams of buying a car like this one day used, but isn’t a great prospect for someone who’s looking to buy one of these cars new (and yes, cost to own/depreciation does matter even to rich people who can afford these cars). Not only will the Ferrari hold its value better but it also comes with a better brand identity, and of course you get access to the infamous Ferrari ecosystem (love it or hate it) where buying one or more of their cars gives you the opportunity to buy a special edition, which is pretty much guaranteed to appreciate heavily. Also Mclaren is definitely not known for its reliability, but then again Ferrari isn’t exactly a shining example of reliability either, especially with hybrids involved. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

What’s insane is that the 296 is Ferrari’s “entry level” super car, and yet it’s as absurdly unbeatable as it is. Unless you’re a 1000 horsepower super/hyper car, you’re not really touching it.

@@ricardofigueroa6754 Don’t look at me for using said terminology. Carwow have described the 296 as being such, as have Road and Track, and Top Gear themselves. Hence is the reason why I used quotation marks. The 296 isn’t Ferrari’s flagship model, then; we’ll put it like that. Yet, it still dominates everything else that isn’t a 1000+ horsepower monster. Also, Chevy don’t do entry level super cars either. Neither the Z06 nor E-Ray are, “entry level”, and the Stingray isn’t a super car.

Haleptic switches in the Ferrari VS uncomfortable seat in McLaren. I think the Ferrari switches would drive me crazy, McLaren wins - bring a small cushion to improve the comfort.

Almost no Ferrari owner complained about the switchgear. They said everything is fine as they have got used to them.

@@Bug4life where did you get the facts and information from, please give link showing atleast 51% of cars delivered the owners stated they are happy with the switchgear after getting used to it thank you. Based, on car tubers, some of who have been in the car industry for 30 to 40 yrs its closer to 100% they all hate it, even some driving the car for thousands of miles with the car on loan for weeks. They have driven more miles than most owners have. If you have a statement back it up by facts.

The 720S is definitely superior. Feel and feedback are so important in any car, let alone in cars this powerful. Also, the interior controls are leaps more ergonomic and safer to use. The interior controls in the 296 will get you killed.
