McLaren Elva | Jay Leno's Garage 

When Jay says he has 12k on his P1 we have to put that into perspective. The man has almost 200 cars. He could drive each one of his cars for only two days out of the year. 12k on one of his cars is incredible! Cars are meant to be driven nice work good sir!

Jay is the only person who can afford these cars that will actually use them the way a car should be. He’s a international treasure when it comes to gearheads.

I always wondered when someone was going to finally make "Racer X's" car.

This engineer is the most down to earth guy I can remember on your show - I really liked his responses to your inquiries - just a fantastic car

Love it! As a guy that has traveled throughout North America on a Harley over the past 50 years, this car might just scratch that itch. A buddy that owns a HD dealership says, "travel in a cage and you watch the movie, travel on a bike and you star in the movie." This McLaren looks like it might just be able to sneak into that starring role.

I never really cared to watch the Jay Leno show... but I find myself watching ALL of his garage shows!!

Jay probably has the highest millage P1 out there, glad at least one of them are getting used and loved.

Well, this is IMHO the best street-legal car ever designed and build by McLaren. Lovely lines, a lot of power, great sound, and a ton of innovations make this for me the ultimate driving machine. I know that I will never be able to afford it, but I WANT ONE !!!

I like the fact that the McLaren engineer acknowledged that Renault did a similar thing with the Renault Spider.

The way their voice clearly recorded really show the difference between the Elva and other non-windshield cars

When it comes to cars I never ask myself "why would they make that", even if it is an unobtainable supercar I appreciate how unique and outright cool it is

I don't usually think of McLarens as beautiful but this car is absolutely gorgeous. truly eye-catching, elegant, and pleasing to look at. extraordinarily well done imo.

Very impressed. Jay is right, everyone is obsessed with SUVs, McLaren is sticking to its roots - building high performing road cars. Why does a 4x4 need to be sporty? It makes no sense - that is why sports cars exist.

Always appreciate that Jay is honest and doesn't pull punches with his commentary.

Honestly, Andrew Kay is just superb, he really knows his kit, can explain why every bolt is there and seems to be having a blast explaining why they did what they did.

Loved the color, body design and the sound of the exhaust. I thought for sure the active aero system would not work well enough for your Go Pro cameras. I was wrong. It was wonderful. What a car!

utterly brilliant, sometimes this great show peaks into truely unbelieveble highs, this is a beast of an episode. The car is unique, looks retro and ultimately sportcar-like, the ride which they do with us feels like we're in fact there with them, the brain-father of the car is present, likeable, and gives answers to perfect questions, which are even better than you could expect, (and he is able to complete his sentences;), the sidestories, anecdotes and insights are toptoptop in both quality and quantity, plus Jay's wearing sunglasses, just to make an already epic episode even more extraordinary. i ioved every second of this.

From the side view,I thought,"Oh,it's the Mach 5".After the full review I can honestly say that this is a car I want.I'm not a 'super car' type,but this really is a 'drivers car',and that's what I like.Thank you Jay,and McLaren's Andrew Kay.

That's probably the most beautiful car I've ever seen. Modern or vintage. The gold and white, the big fenders. It's perfect.

A/C is a great idea for this car. I use it with the T tops off on my car and use the heat when it’s cooler out. You don’t need to be in a sealed car to be comfortable

I don't know the Elva was originally a McLaren design. Neat. I've seen an original street example at the Carlisle Import show a couple of times. My first thought when I saw this car was, "the designers were Speed Racer fans..." If McLaren thinks cars need to be geared more towards the driving experience, maybe we'll see the return of a manual transmission. Maybe... One can hope.

Did anyone notice when the engineer closed the rear hatch, it didn't fully close on the driver side? Then at 24:58 Jay Leno closes it with his knuckles while distracting the audience with how to open the door? Maybe the most slick, professional move I have ever seen from a host.

What a ridiculous car. Absolutely impractical. I unequivocally love it for its ridiculous impracticality. McLaren gets it. Thanks again, Jay and crew, for another great episode!

When the video began, I really didn’t like the way the car looked, but after the explanation of how carefully the car was designed to deflect the wind for the occupants I really think the car is cool. It’s sort of a Corvette on steroids designed as a car driven on a sunny day to satisfy the urge for that occasional adrenaline rush.

My metallic gold 68 Impala convertible named Elvira is the great great grandmother of this car. The family resemblance is uncanny.

I feel like all guys have a designated garage work uniform. Jays is the classic blue shirt and jeans. I personally like gym shorts and sandals. Not particularly safe but it’s hard to change old habits. Although a dropped half inch wrench on my toe might persuade me otherwise. Been getting into Jays videos lately. His content is spectacular.

If they would make a version of the Elva with "only" 400-500 or so HP, and price it at about $100K, give or take, it might make some sense to the well heeled car guy. For this version, you need to be more than well heeled, sadly. I'd rather go out and buy a vintage ELVA.

Modern car, but looks so classic. It needs a version with round headlights in chrome trim under the clear plastic covers, and 60's racing knock-off wheels.) Beautiful body styling!

Definitely looks like a Can Am Racer, the gold and white is perfect with the sculpted look and those mirrors, it's one of those cars you like to run your hands over....great lines!

Jay seems quite enamored with this car and a history of owning McLaren's....

The Renault Spider is being mentioned as an earlier concept (1995 - 1997) with deflector, but it was half of a success. There was an incident that someone lost an eyeball whilst not wearing a helmet. A metal nut crashed into an eye. Later a windscreen was to be added by law. The Spider was successful in the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) without windscreen. 2,000 Units had been projected for sales. 1,636 had actually been sold when Renault pulled the plug. It still remains a concept for dare devils indeed.

Gorgeous car, with really interesting tech. I'm with CG Tacticonus, I'll probably never see in in person let alone be able to afford one, but I do enjoy learning about it. I don't really understand why some designers want to get rid of windscreens, though. I think this car would look just as good with a low, wrap-around windscreen (think Speed Racer's Mach 5)---- which would be very expensive to manufacture with no optical distortion, and still be very exotic as well as practical. And as long as I'm day-dreaming, why not eliminate the instrument pod and put in a fighter-inspired HUD (those things obviously have to be legible in bright sunlight!) to give as unobscured view ahead as possible?

The Elva is nice but the Ferrari SP1/SP2 is at a another level.

About twenty years ago, a large stone hit the centre of my helmet visor, it was travelling like a bullet & would have killed me if my visor was open. It must have been kicked up by a big truck going in the opposite direction. So I wouldn't risk driving a car without a windscreen, unless I'm wearing a full-face helmet.

My uncle owned a body shop and built cars for friends but never got to build one for himself died at 65 with kidney failure on his death bed one of the last things he told me was he never got to build his hot rod I sure miss him and wished I could live that dream for him he was a great human being I sure miss him.

Wow! The best episode ever. I was grinning from ear to ear throughout. My face would break if I were to ever drive one of these epic machines. The livery of this car viewed from the side makes the car look very similar to the Elva sports racing cars of the late sixties. The dual head rests are also reminiscent of the marque's sports racing heritage. From other angles the car is gorgeous. I think I'm in love! The only criticism I have about this beautiful car regards rollover protection. There basically isn't any. I'm partial to open top cars, having driven formula cars for 20+ years as a club racer. My race cars and my MGB all had at least adequate roll over protection though. Ultra rich folks who buy this car better get some training before driving it anywhere near the limit. Like many super car owners, they have a propensity to experience dire consequences by driving over their skill level. That cockpit air bubble concept reminds me of a trip I made from Lime Rock to Albany NY in my MGB . It was raining cats and dogs. I was completely dry until near home. I encountered under forty mile an hour traffic, slowed down and watched the rain line proceed up my trousers to my shirt and finally to my head and eye glasses. I quickly pulled over, hopped out, took the erector set out of the trunk and constructed the top, getting soaked in the process. Getting soaked is all part of the fun of driving with the top down in a sports car or with no top at all in a formula car at the race track.. -dave

Stop by the local big-box, but the best 'Chromecast' they stock ($50?), go home and plug it in to your biggest, newest, Super Bowl-ready flat screen, run the kids out and watch this film. Jay spends a fortune on lighting, on cameras and on the incredibly talented people who arrange it all. And the result is breathtaking!

Who cares why they built it, it’s beautiful and sounds amazing. Just be happy it was built in the first place

Great video and balance. 50% going over the car, 50% driving it. Then driving it was 50% about this car and 50% telling the engineer what’s wrong with every other car they made. Only jay could get away with that.

‘If I can’t see my car from the table, we’re not eating there!’ lol, man after my own heart. I used to park my Ducati Pantah 650 on the sidewalk next to my table at my favorite restaurant. I could just reach over the railing and pat it on it’s little gas tank, lol.
