The aston looked a lot more developped and advanced. It may be weird but it seemed "cleverer". More subtil, more ingeneous, extracting more from the regulation. The mclaren is more brute force, classical gestion of outwash etc. I guess we ll see at Barcelone

Both philosophies work, it's about who gets the best of it. Giorgio Piola believes that AMR has picked the easiest to construct aero philosophy, however he believes that the development wall on this design is much harder to clear. He believes that McLaren and Haas have picked the design philosophy that's harder to construct but with better development path. However I question this. My limited understanding is that Aston's design adds more downforce but with that, some drag penalty compared to what is, on the face of it, a more slippery design for the more traditional coke bottle shape. The undersection on Aston's elongated sidepod creates a split body approach and some form of pseudo tunnel.. why would you want this however... Aston has opted for a short-medium flatter wheel base this season.. could it be doubling up on the pressure zones is more effective/conducive to creating downforce than running to the extremities of the dimensions.. What does each philosophy want to achieve. Some are theorising that the McLaren and Haas have opted to run some rake, where as Aston appears to be running none. Everything I am seeing is just adding.kpre questions than answers but given that the teams are all still hiding certain elements, it's maybe too soon to evaluate how each team plans to overcome the disadvantages and maximise the advantages of their philosophy. As you say, I guess we'll see at Barcelona. I fear those who get it wrong will feel the weight of it, compared to those who get it right. Just due to the radically different approaches here, there is no immediate path for convergence this season. I am anxious to see how things pan out.

I have a feeling this McLaren is going to have a lot of issues with setup. Pullrod at the front, pushrod at the rear, both multilink. If they can get it to work, it sounds exciting, but setting all of that up for each circuit is going to be horrendous. Edit: Also, the discontinuity on the front wing isn't a rendering mistake. If you look at the built model from the MTC, you can see the same drop down. It looks like a slightly smoother transition, but this might also be due to lighting etc.

Based on the 3 cars we have seen, who in your professional opinion has the best designed car at this point? Not being an aerodynamic expert I'm inclined to say Aston Martin is the current leader with its double tea tray and aggressive undercut side pods. Not knowing much about how venturi tunnels work and the overall impact on downforce that the new floors can have. It looks to me like the Aston have a lower drag profile than Mclaren or Haas. Although I'm a fan and have little to no engineering experience so could be entirely wrong.

James key said that there are many crucial parts on the mclaren that they are hiding. If this was the actual car then they would have done the cars shakedown today. A bigger question I’ve had with the new regs is how does an aerodynamicist look for loopholes in a rule set? For instance if you were to look for advantages in the 22 rule set, where would you look for areas to exploit?
@lukasausen
@lukasausen 2 года назад
See his video on the aston martin video for example when a piece of the car is discribed the words can be distorted to fit another form that was not initially intended, so they run at a risk of being rejected or if lucky aproved and have significant gains, its all about risk reward, but for example if the description of the front wing was a wing with maximum of 4 parts, they could change those 4 parts to whatever because theres no more expesification, in aston marting case they changed a piece so that it have one more flat place where it was not intended.

Agreed, though I'd be shocked if Aston wasn't also quite different by first race too. I get the feeling they wanted some positive news to help distract from some of the behind the scenes turmoil from their staffing changes, so they showed a few more cards up their sleeves with a more recent version of their car, knowing most others would be hiding as much as possible. But I doubt they've shown the entirety of their hand, lol.

I do like seeing the sidepods further forward vs the 2021 cars to give some more protection to the drivers legs in a side impact.

Please do Red Bull's aero design analysis next! I know you're a former Merc employee but I'd like to watch all of these analyses!

That won't happen because the red bull was a repainted show car back from the British GP. It was more of a livery reveal
@CallumRSU30

Red Bull was just a livery launch effectively, I believe.

He skipped RBR because they didn't release anything worth analysing; it wasn't their car.

The red bull would be the slowest, because its not their real car. You can already see this at their nose, it only has 3 wings, even though you are allowed 4 elements

No rearward analysis :( but super cool videos you've been doing! McLaren seems much more streamlined, may be the same philosophy of good straight line speed as we saw in Monza

Why is no one using the wheelcovers with parts of the livery on them

Looks like McLaren are trying to have lower drag and a more streamlined car. Also they are trying to use the front and rear wing for downforce compared to Aston that is trying to get the downforce from ground effect
@eronsebastianermino9989
@eronsebastianermino9989 2 года назад
I think it is because of these new regulations, using the ground effect to generate more downforcenis better than using the front and rear wing like in 1980 where the ground effect is introduced. Those cars created ridiculous amounts of downforce and some of the teams ran without the front wing

I was wondering if you could explain the terminology more like what out wash is and what the high pressure zones do to benefit the cars aero! I’m aware we could be here for a 3 hour video if you did but for the non engineers watching it’d help for more accessible content

I think they've splurged out on the uberflam to create a vortex around the hyperbilb in order to lessen the effect of sidewash on the megaflange.

This car out of the thee released is just so sexy to me, its the simplicity and the illusion of a shorter wheel base i think.

Why does the leading edge of the front and rear wings have an upturned lip? Is that for efficiency?
