I'm an Interior Designer and I'm damn sure that HDHMR or MDF is not suitable for kitchens, bathrooms or any moisture prone areas. In your case, there is a high chance of the interior designer you approached to be an amateur who have no idea about materials. Please make sure to get help from professionals who have good knowledge about the field. It can save a ton of money and time. Also get multiple suggestions and don't stick to a single designer or quotation

What laminates did you use? Was the pasting done with Fevicol or rubber based instant adhesive? I understand that carpenters prefer rubber based quick fix adhesive since Fevicol requires overnight curing.

It all depends on your budget. If you want a realistic look and have a good budget, choose plywood. If you are on a tight budget and don't mind the pastic feel, go for Upvc.
