In How the Garcia Girls lost their Accents by Julia Alvarez, the chapters are in reverse order. They’re more like interconnected short stories about the characters though. I also remember Chronicle of a Death foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez being told out of order, but it was narrated by a character in the future to give the story flow. Would love to read something with the chapters out of order!

TJ have you read the ghosts of heaven by Marcus Sedgwick ( I think that’s spelt right) the chapters aren’t out of order but there are four sections in the book and you can read them in any order and the story still makes sense. I found it really interesting.

4:26 that is literally what happened in Aladdin, his introduction was him getting chased by guards because he stole some bread, risking his life in multiple scenes, only to give it to some starving children. I can’t tell if I’m disappointed in the author or myself for instantly recognizing that as the Aladdin introduction 4:36 I feel less disappointed now

Yeah! I hope Cindy is gonna be as blown away by Prisoner of Askaban as my 13 year old self was. It’s been my favorite ever since (I’m 31 now, w h a t). Because that book is so inventive and has the greatest unpredictable twists (if you go in knowing nothing. That’s a prerequisite for its capacity to surprise you.) Can’t wait to hear her take on it. (But yeah the hope for more diversity is going to be an endless one. Even though it does clearly and continuously address discrimination. Just more in the metaphorical way, eh.)

i think the thing about the harry potter fandom is like… we don’t actually like the series? like at this point we’ve made our own version of the characters and books and we don’t actually care about anything JKR actually wrote. I really love Cindy.Her way of explaining and talking about the books makes it so easy for me to understand after school instead of three page response with vocabulary words and in a sophisticated way that is just unnecessary, It’s down to earth, honest, and relatable. I love this channel.❤️💙

My parents took me to a therapist when I was like 13 because my brother had died, and let me tell you, I came out of that session more traumatized than when I went in. I had a stutter for a whole week after and I lost all my progress for my speech impediments. This gave me a fear of therapists, but I always love stories of how they helped other people because I can't imagine doimg that....

As a long-time Harry Potter fan, I also rated the first book 2 stars upon rereading it as an adult, and I totally agree with all the issues you picked out (especially the fatphobia). I will say though I've recently reread the second book and while there are still issues I found it so much more entertaining and action-focused than the first one - so there's hope!

I hesitate to give J.K. Rowling that much credit, but I always felt like she went so hard on Dudley’s Fatty McFatness to highlight how deprived Harry was. Like the Dursley family uses food as a form of control and are feeding him scraps and leftovers and shit.

Girll just keep on pushing through the HP books! When I started the first two books, I was like "Eh, this is a childish yet decent series" And then the third book came along...whew! Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, my babies, were introduced. As you progress, I swear the books get more dark and the writing style becomes more adultish and there is so much more intriguing elements that come together.

I think that in the case of Harry potter, you're supposed to read it in middle school or even elementary school, and re-read it as an adult. For its time it was a unique book but now after the COMPLETE saturation of the YA or fantasy genre it comes off as a little boring. Still consider it one of my favourite books of all time. And I do think it gets much better as it goes on.

24:01 I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, but I completely agree with most of your criticisms, especially about J.K. Rowling. That's actually why a lot of fans have turned on her in the past decade. She has some offensive portrayals in her books, then, after she had finished the series, she started tweeting claims that certain characters were actually diverse the whole time. The year she published the final book, she had a press conference to announce one character's sexuality. Then, when she releases new content set in that world that has that character in it, she does not include that aspect of their character and actually adds another offensive stereotype to a different character. Fans are like, "Rowling, stop pretending to be re inclusive than you are."

There are simple ways to show that a character -especially a protagonist , is privileged and ignorant, without making them casually racist and then not address it. For example, having the mc think that something that might financially attainable to her, is also attainable to others (not everybody can afford to say they spent too much at Target Karen). Even better, they fully come to the conclusion that they are wrong and do better. And in the case of ‘Pretty Girls’, you basically hit the nail on the head by describing how much more women in minorities struggle with rape & kidnappings. Easily could have explored this. Thanks for talking about this 🙏🏼

i love it when i find people who haven't read harry potter talking about their first time reading it! i really hope you finish it. i do find the first book to be almost trite, (i'd also pin it as the weakest book in the series personally, especially in terms of plot,) but the series definitely grows up as harry ages. growing up with the series was an amazing experience because of that, i was always roughly harry's age as the books were coming out. my nostalgia goggles aside, though, for me re-reading them more critically as a grown up, i appreciate the later books more than the earlier ones. i'm excited to find out if you will as well.
