U R right about ACE ... Consider all he has pulled himself through .. Its a small wonder he can even " TAUCK " ! I am another Bronxite / rock n roller .. He has a great sense of humor ..
I love Ace. Just a cool, funny guy who happens to be one of the most influential guitarists of all time. People in my age group (50+) can tell you just how influential Ace was back in the day. I wanted to learn guitar because of him and I know many others did the same. Cheers to you, Ace!
In 1984 I bought a 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. Because of Ace Frehley of course. 475 bucks. Pretty good deal for back then. Still have it!
@@metalinyourhead3604 Back then old guitars were just old, not vintage. My dad got his second car, a 65 mustang, for 600 bucks back in the 80s, I would love to take a time machine back then and stock up on cars and guitars
For those of you who are curious and freaking out about him saying "Nickel Silver", here is the official count: 0:27 , 0:30, 1:03, 1:06, 1:18 . 5 in all.
When Ace auditioned for KISS in 1973, he played a single-pickup Gibbsin Reverse Fya-berrd t'ru a fifty-watt Marshall cabnitt fidded wid eight ten by ten speekizz. (You have to at least write it the way he pronounces it or it loses something in the translation. It's sort of like, if Carmine Appice were a Nee Yawkuh werth hizz weight in peetsa dough, then he'd jrive a Honder Uh-Kawd--dat's dee uffishul car a-Nee Yawk, a Honder Uh-Kawd--wid a pair-a persnull lysum plates onnit dat reed JRUMMA. 'Cawz zat's wuddy duzz, Carmine. He playz za jurmmz...and he writes about playin' na jrummz. See, with Ace, it's he same thing: write it like he tawx it, or it looziz su'mm someweah.)
The way I understand it, Ace actually used an Ovation Breadwinner guitar right up to the recording of the first album. It was only after that when he got his Gibson endorsement.
Very cool !!! I had been told (and wrote about) there being 13 of the AFS series. In fact, I have pictures and documents showing AFS 013 (check my site for details). But anyway ... These guitars were the ones that Ace got, from Gibson Custom, before The 300 and/or the Gibson USA production models were available. They weren't the prototypes, but I guess you could kind of call them the "Artist Proof" guitars ... although a run of 13 Artist Proof guitars is way outside of the normal 1 or 2, they will usually build. I know that the only one that Ace still plays is AFS 002, as he mentions in the video.
Interesting...Always thought Ace favored Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups in the bridge position. The pickup here looks to be their PAF version. It has chrome screw poles and solid poles.
+I'm Gumby Dammit !! Seems like he went backwards recently. Looks like the PAF is in the bridge and the PAFS are in the neck and middle. It's usually the opposite.
There was a problem during the initial run of his signatures. As I understand, Dimarzio didn't have enough Super Distortions for all 300 models of the run, so some of them were outfitted with PAFs instead, but they were still advertised as Super Distortions.
lol do you think they would give Ace the wrong instrument and he never changed them for 20 years? Ace's sound is more from PAF's than Super Distorion, remember that Ace mostly recorded everything from Love Gun to The Elder with his '59, and that was pretty much the guitar tone he has kept until now.
I read somewhere several years back that Ace wasnt happy with the sound he was getting with the Super Distortion in that guitar on the '98 tour, and Paul turned him on to the Duncan JB. My memory is a little fuzzy on the details. Oddly enough i was actually trying to find the article i read that in when i found this video.
Ace at the time came from using Laneys, Organge and other more distorted and screaming amps to classic Marshalls to the reunion tour, so he started using his Big Muff from EH again, he wanted a really hot pickup and started using DP100s and to compensate he changed his amps to EVH during the PC Tour and the Farewell Tour too, when he tried the Duncan Distortions he went back to Marshalls
He mentions kiss REINION tour. I'm wondering what year this is. I saw him in 1999 / 2000 with my friend who was disabled. Had no legs. We got into the disabled section. These two girls jumped over and tried to sit there with us and got thrown out. But I'll never forget my friends face .. Someone took a photograph of both of us and we both had the biggest Smiles on our face and watching that concert. We are the biggest kiss fans. R i p Pucci AKA Dan.
No. In typical Ace fashion he was hard up for some cash, so he pawned off the Nickel Plated backplate to the corner jewelry pawn shop. Word is they gave him $1.85 for it which was not enough for a pack of smokes so he borrowed the rest from Gene for an undisclosed interest rate of which he's now pawning off the rest of the guitar to payback the loan. That's too bad because that guitar has other Nickel Silver appointments on it.
well, i had a lot of respect for Ace,, hell he was who inspired me to play guitar all of them years ago, but after firing his band with one member whose wife had just died? man i did not think that was too cool
@@plexilespaul1956 I guess over time he may have wanted a more vintage sound, for his solo projects perhaps? You know Ace will make changes on the fly when he feels like it ;-)
HeavyHorses Pause the video at 0:18 seconds. That bridge pickup is NOT a super distortion. Super distortion have 12 Allen screws/hex screws. That is flat head screws and slugs. I had an email discussion with John Tate about this and he said it is rumored to be a Duncan Distortion. A DiMarzio PAF in the bridge (and Ace always only had the bridge hooked up) would be terribly bright. When the Budokan came out I know that had a super distortion in the bridge and the PAFs in the middle/neck AND Gibson managed to put the right pickups in that one, but I don’t think Ace played it much when it came out, he stuck to that guitar. But I know he’s been playing his 59 replica as of late once those got released with their stock pickups. Which Gibson says is Burstbucker 3 in the bridge and a custom bucker in the neck. Ace is who got me into using Super Distortions
Ace rocks & my favorite lead guitarist next to Jimmy Page but Ace has a style that exceeds Jimmy's in my opinion along with the KISS tunes which are far more diverse compared to Zeppelin therefore Ace has a wider variety of playing due to the songs he did with KISS. Glad to see Ace sober & catching up on lost years as he still has a lot to offer the music world & us fans.
what you idiots dont seem to understand is that he isnt saying Frehley is better than Page - he is saying he likes Frehleys STYLE better. Ace is certainly not a technical player - Page is. Now here's the things for you guys who think Ace cant play as well as Jimmy - Ace can play any Led Zeppelin song note for note and has shown that multiple times when asked by fans or other players. Ace has never claimed to be as good or better as Page and he even says he just plays the guitar without trying to make it technical - he plays strictly by feel. I love Jimmy page but page was too technical at times and well, ace is still playing and Jimmy isnt, and from what ive gathered Page hasnt really been able to play live since about 1976...
C'mon boy's, Ace is cool and has some good licks, BUT, please don't compare him to the Jimma, yes, Page, like Ace, had some tough times and don't have youthful dexterity anymore, but in the history of rock guitar there's Clapton. Beck, Page, Hendrix on the Mount Rushmore of Rock Guitarists.
Ace I totally like your guitar playing and you and kiss turned me into a total geek for three years of my young impressionable life obsessed with rocking out to your records and collecting your swag and learning your riffs on shitty guitars ran through even shittier amps. Man that was cool. But look I’m not eleven and if I’m spending that kind of bread on a guitar, I want my own fucking face on the headstock and it better not be in kiss make up. Lol
You’re ex gf has gone on a social media rampage talking some crazy shit and taking victim donations in what I think is the worst case of self righteous bitter slander and ex bashing this country has ever heard. Not bad publicity if you think about it. I mean there’s a huge mgtow audience listening to your new stuff right now just to spite her. Lol
I’ve heard her losing her shit before and it was comparably crazy shit. Anyone breaking up with her would have similar issues. Just no one would gaf because they aren’t ace mf freyley. Lol Crazy ex gfs are getting away with this across the entire country. But we aren’t getting any response to our cries for help. Lol I think you need to step up and be a spokesperson and change legislation on shit bagging exes. Lol
I remember having a T-shirt for a local Metal band in the 80's called Jolly Roger that looked like the shirt Ace is wearing. Spoooooky! I wore it to a New Kids concert I was forced to go to back in the 90's.
By the amount of dents (which look quite cool btw) I'd guess he usually does that on stage to induce noise and feedback, most people would use just a fist but when sporting such a silly ring anyways, why not!
