I don’t mean to be blunt, but there’s nothing in this video that you can’t get at a “local college grocery store.” He actually gave a couple substitutions like bologna instead of the fancy ham. Ramen instead of fancy rice noodles. Then with anything like bread, you don’t need the exact type he uses. Outside do that, you can get pork, eggs, milk, butter, seasonings just about anywhere. He could make a pt.2, but the aim of this video was meals for college kids using both available supplies & ingredients. Got a little carried away at the end with supplies, but overall it’s very doable. If you can’t get these ingredients… I think there are bigger issues.

Not even a college student, just a tired dad looking for quicker yet super tasty meals. Really looking forward to making a bunch of these in the coming weeks!! Update: I made 3 of these so far! Pork stirfry, this was insane, so much intense flavor, probably better than 80% of any style of stirfry I've gotten from a Chinese restaurant. Garlic chili oil noodles: Very intense flavor, very good overall. Make sure to use a full pack of noodles. I used about 3 of the 5 bundles of a 16 Oz pack and the chili oil was extremely spicy/overpowering. French toast sticks: Absolutely delicious, super easy to make, pepper added into a cinnamon sugar mixture is a MUST for me from now on.

I don't know enough about your situation, but I vegetarian dishes are almost always going to be cheaper to make. I would have a look of what products are the cheapest and go from there (there are websites that will give you suggestions of dishes based on ingredients you have). Some suggestions that come to my mind are hash browns, crepes (maybe not anymore with egg prices), bean soup, or vegetarian stir fry.
@MangoMotors
@MangoMotors 6 месяцев назад
From my personal experience, when you have so little to work with, you need to strategize and stretch you money out. It's cheaper to make a single big dish that lasts you multiple meals than to make multiple individual meals. And also make the different meals you make revolve around a central protein that was on sale for the weak.

Nori and Puff Pastry is sold in just about every standard grocery store in the US. Even Walmart has it. Real Talk, part of learning the cook is learning to adapt recipes to your needs and tastes. No one but you is going to be able to solve your specific problems. If you don't have puff pastry maybe you have biscuit dough which is even sold in some dollar stores. If you don't have Nori you can probably find Tortillas.

7:37 what you described as "churro" , it's actually a dish in Spain called TORRIJA (it's literally bread soaked in egg and cinnamon and then lightly fried much in the fashion you show, the pepper though it's something I will try next time). Mexican churros are the mexican version of Spanish churros, which is a different food than Torrijas and they actually look the same as Spanish churros (extruded long bits of dough). As a current college student (and this only applies to my personal experience), I have a caveat to all of these recipes: they only work if you have an apartment. A dorm will not work with nearly all of these, mostly because it'll be a single kitchen shared in a dorm of 120+ people (on the low end). Clearly Joshua has no anxiety since he goes to strangers' living spaces and judges their kitchen appliances, but it'd be interesting to see him challenged in that environment.

My favorite thing to use chickpeas in is a homemade corn nut recipe I started in high-school. I love corn nuts as a snack so I started messing around with chickpea corn nut recipes. Some of my earliest memories are in the kitchen with my grandma. I loved being in the kitchen so much I started my first year of culinary arts school through the trades program the high-school and university had. Sadly going through that first year course also made it so I didn't further my culinary arts schooling which I do regret. Instead I went to a community college and became a healthcare assistant working in senior living facilities. I miss the kitchen and get that love back every time I get to cook.

Thanks so much for this Josh, I really need it. I've been really struggling with my mental health lately, which makes it incredibly difficult to work towards my goal of learning to cook more often to make family meals for my dad and my friends. Having quick and easy recipes that I can make when I'm having a bad day and have no energy will save me from living off microwave mac and cheese cups again. I love and appreciate all the content you make. Can't wait for the second book and to watch your success continue to blossom and thrive.

The best tip to healthy meals - buy fresh vegetables. Preferebly those in Season (tastier and cheaper) and those that can go with a lot of combinations. So for example: Zucchini, leeks, carrots, mushrooms, Kohlrabi, Broccoli... Frozen: Spinach, Peas, Cauliflower Tomatoes and Cucumber for snacking. With some other cheap staples - potatoes and onions - and some dried goods (like rice, noodles and chickpeas) you'll have lots of options.
@morganearly9742
@morganearly9742 6 месяцев назад
@@theresabu3000 this is a really great idea! Unfortunately, while I’m not really a picky eater, vegetables are my least liked food group :/ but I’ve been trying to find ways to prep veggies that are more appealing to me, like with stronger flavors or full dishes instead of as sides. I do love cucumbers with tajín though!!

I can't explain how much I love the diversity of content I've seen over the last couple of years. Who doesn't want to watch someone who knows what they're doing work really well at their craft and show you how to do it too? That's super satisfying to watch. But then add on the willingness to set aside those more "expert" or "fine" techniques and teach people how to make good cheap food? God these videos just get better and better.

Love that ethos of using largely overlapping, cross utilizable stuff. Years ago I had the idea to do something like that, but across an entire kitchen pantry- particularly honing in on how easily you could jump from one global cuisine to another far across the seas by changing out just a few items. Cheers to you for all the hard work and success.

Made popcorn in the wok for the first time, using Alton Brown's method (same as this video, but he adds the salt at the beginning). Put the butter along the edge at the end. Perfect. For all of those college students, a wok is perhaps the first pan you should buy. Follow that with an Instant Pot. Being a decent cook who prepared both of my college-age kids with essentials, those two pans, and a decent knife 6-inch chef's knife is enough.

The thing that got me through most of my pre-work life is the simplest thing ever and I could eat buckets of it: 2 med/large potatoes, 2-3 eggs, any neutral tasting frying fat/oil (cheapest kind around my parts), pan with a lid, s&p, dried herbs (italian dried mix works well, if not available: oregano, thyme, basil will work but will change the taste profile as the pretty much only seasoning, so pick your favourite). Cut potatoes into ~2 mm slices (i can do it over the pan at this point, accurate cuts are not required) and dump them into the pan while it's heating up the oil, spreading them until you cover an entire layer. S&P + herb the whole thing then cut the other potato, layer it on top and S&P + H again. Cover with lid. Fry on medium heat untill bottom layer is golden brown. Flip so the top layer can fry too, cover again. As I'm lazy I tend to add eggs right on top of that, so when nearly done, remove cover, crack in the eggs, preferably away from the sides of the pan, salt the yolks a bit for taste, cut the heat entirely and put cover back on - important! don't lift the cover at all, to check the eggs just shake the pan a bit, solid whites won't move around (unless your cover is not see through xD). Wait untill whites are solid but yolks are still liquid. Serve in a bowl rather than a plate, remembering to burst the yolks, since they will cook in the residual heat of the potatoes. It sounds silly, but somehow it's more than just the sum of the parts. And it's cheap as f%^&. You need only a pan and a heat source. The only struggle you can have with this recipe is heat control. Some pans conduct heat better, some heating options do as well. If your potatoes are browning but they are still raw in the middle - your heat is too high. If they are wilting and not browning - the heat is too low. That's it. Options - it goes surprisingly well with garlic mayo based sauce. You can add cheese on top after turning and before adding eggs. Onions added before cheese would work too. Any leftover sausage can be cubed and thrown on top of 2nd layer right at the start to heat up and get crispy after turning. Raw meats should rather be prepped separately and added to the bowl. As I'm now a responsible working adult, I tend not to eat this often, cause it's anything but healthy. I got time and means to make "better" things, But I'm pretty sure I made and ate hundreds of kilos of this thing in my younger days.

24 mini corn dogs = $1.81. 5 cheapo franks cut into 5 pieces each, 1 egg, half cup each of cornmeal and flour, 1/2 C sugar (could be less and healthier), 1/2 C water, 1/4 C melted butter, pinch baking soda and dash of salt. Put one frank piece into each sprayed mini muffin pan cup and spoon in batter. Bake at 375 for 10 minutes. Any excess batter can be baked or quickly skillet fried and maybe add bits of cheese or leftovers but don't toss perfectly good food. We just had these for dinner and couldn't be easier.

As a student who literally hates cooking (for myself, it is hard to cook good, and very time consuming), I loved this video. Especially the sandwich for breakfast and the noodle. I usually have my lunch in the college but, that noodle can save my nights, and the sandwich, my mornings 😂 Thank you, I will most definitely try those two, and maybe also the popcorn. My house”s microwave is kinda broken, it isnt working properly, so, as a man who loves popcorn and chips as snacks while watching some movie or series, microwave popcorns doesnt work for me for a while now. So maybe I will give it a go as well.

You are far better off investing in a cheap fridge and you can get ones for less than 150 bucks esp second hand. If thats impossible due to accommodation rules then learning to bulk cook/meal prep once a week utilizing a communal kitchen is what I recommend. You should not be surviving off meals that are made with ingredients that dont need refridgeration no matter how broke you are.
