@@emmabelignazingwhate5150 Ethereal means delicate and light and 'not of this world' so it's often used to describe fae or angels etc. I think in this case with the jeans and a t-shirt they're talking about Cady's final outfit. She's very pared back and simple and it looks gorgeous on her. She's not of the 'teenage' world of the time. She's not wearing a fashion trend or fad item she's wearing a staple outfit and really looks grown up. Which suggests that since her first appearence/outfit she's grown up and such.
Woah! Learning about that teeny detail of taking a leather strap off her African bracelet as a choker is what I love about these behind-the-scenes insights videos :)
We should have known it. To say it better, they should've shown us that. Why hasn't there been a scene where she made her choker? Or where she she choosed her outfit for the party? Those scenes are important to better understand and SEE the transformation shes in
This lady doesn't actually realise how much of an icon she is and how her costumes have changed fashion for an entire generation. I know I for one emulate the outfits and I know all of yall do too. 😂
The dress' colour scheme is the opposite of Regina's spring fling dress as well, I liked to think that was purposeful, as she had just seen Regina unable to fit into her dress a couple scenes before. ICONIC costume design.
According to Tina Fey, the strapless party dress ensemble was supposed to look comical and tacky. Everyone was disappointed when they realized Lindsay Lohan pulled it off.
Thats really funny because by the time the movie came out that combo of black/pink was a super popular look. I graduated 8th grade around that time and a lot of girls went with that color scheme for their dresses, myself included.
This film is so important because it depicts a reality. Not an idolization of reality, but a true reality. It yanks everyday people into a third person’s perspective and it allows them to realize what their position in society is. These kinds of films are important, especially for younger people, because they make them aware of how they actually appear through their actions. ‘Mean Girls’ highlights the concept of school being a microscopic version of society with a plethora of power-dynamics and this is emphasized, as seen in the video, by the clothing selections of each character. The mundane setting and activity of it all also gives an eerie feel to the underlying socio-political message of the film. The concept of the overbearing and suffocating power-dynamics pushing the boundaries between civilization and chaos is further emphasized during the cafeteria scene where Cady imagines herself and her classmates as wild animals as she is angered by Regina’s manipulation games. This scene, thus, ultimately states that human life is not superior to jungle life, but simply a more sophisticatedly vicious version of it. An excellent, watchable film. I agree with you 100%, it absolutely should be taught in film classes.
Even when I was first watching Mean Girls as a 12 year old I noticed Cady's change of dress parelleled with her steadily rising "status" as a Plastic/popular girl. Nicely done.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UcvKdNiA7uc.html here’s a half hour video going through everyone’s costumes! It’s not the costumer designer, but the RU-vidr has talked to the costume designer about it!
I love how she stays humble at the end about being happy she contributed to a movie that people liked, while mean girls is obviously the most iconic teenmovie of my generation. It’s the clueless of my generation!
I like how Cady wears hoop earrings not only at her party but also when Regina gets dethrone! Not to mention, Gretchen wears hoop earrings at the end of the movie as well!

Is just realized every movie Lohan was is is so timeless and iconic. But Mean Girls is just in another level. I wish she could comeback to acting. She’s extremely good! And she’s missed
I remember watching this on our DVD in the special features section, she looks virtually the same (the costume designer) with the same shiny look. I remember the look back then, alot of polka dots & low rider jeans & collared shirts
Sullivan Hodges I remember watching, and every time thinking about how nice the detail was that as she got more drunk and clumsy, she also couldn’t keep her dress up. It just added to her mood
Love seeing all the deliberation and planning involved in choosing the costumes!!! I think people often forget how much costume design contributes to how a character appears overall and our subconscious perception of characters, especially with movies that have a more mundane setting.
She mentioned costumes like a candy store. The mean girls are similar to the heathers. Heathers have a song about Candy Store. I'm such a fan I see heathers in everything lmao
I wish they talked about how Regina was no longer wearing hoops at the end scene. She was wear straight line silver earrings. And her hair was in a loose ponytail, PLUS she was just wearing a simple sweater.
wow for a moment there i forgot about the 2nd one. watched it once years ago and that was the end of it. the real mean girls watched like dozens of times
I feel like one of the main reasons Mean Girls is so cherished is because of the realness. The fashion isn't over done the extras are realistic with how they dress, I wouldn't know personally, but so are The Plastics for that time. Even the hallway scene has a realness to it, with the way that the hallways aren't completely empty as the plastics waltz through, the students are busy, getting to their classes, dont make a huge deal about the fact that the popular people are walking by. MEAN GIRLS WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY OR SO HEP ME BE!
i always love hearing about how wardrobe/costuming goes hand in hand with other aspects of film. it's so easily overlooked but so much thought goes into it
Is anyone like me? I really enjoy Cady’s transformation into Plastic. That’s scene where she’s walking down the hall in the blue ruffle skirt, was so satisfying, like YES! You made it! They plastics were meant to be villains but I liked them the best! I wanted her to be Queen 👸
I love this! Growing up I definitely picked up on Cady’s transition and everyone’s clothing. Clothing is such an important part of identity when you’re in high school. I really love how much thought and authenticity she put into designing these costumes. ❤️
I wrote about this film for personality psychology examining the personality and growth of all the characters and got a 100. Thank you Mean Girls! Love the costumes.
Wow I'm so delighted to hear the insight and details into the costume designing and storytelling. Its true, these outfits are iconic and myself and many others tried to emulate them (and still draw inspiration).
I thought it was cool how Gretchen's Halloween costume looked like a movie spy/operative as well as a cat. Because she's a spy (that's why her hair is so big) and a covert operative.
I *love* how all of the costumes have a backstory, even if nobody is gonna notice or care besides them. It just adds a bit of personality to the outfits. Love iT!!!
This was a great idea for a RU-vid video. The costumes were so important to the story of this movie and the costume designer really nailed every one of the costumes. It is always interesting seeing a master explain her craft.
