You didn't talk about the signs with the arrows. These are very important. They are critical if one wants to attempt to not be lost in Venezia. They always point out where to go to get to the important landmarks....Rialto, Piazza San Marco, Ferrovia (train station) , and so forth. It's so easy to get lost in Venice and these signs are a great help, if you know to look for them. Usually yellow, but occasionally white.
@WhatashameMaryJane
@WhatashameMaryJane 4 года назад
I was uncertain if I should include them or not. But they're not historical signs, they're just made for tourists in the recent years... Also, honestly, I shot this video at the end of a full day of shooting and I was extra tired... 😜

sotoportigo is an interesting word - soto --> sotto --> below or under & portego ~= portico (stile di bologna) = covered walkway. So basically a covered walkway that is "under", in this case under a building rather than just under just a roof.

The history and beauty of Venice is breathtaking! Love the language lesson. Knowing the meaning behind the signs (ie: the “ancient” version of street)would add so much more to someone visiting. I’m interested...the streets and waterways looked so peaceful and empty. Was it because you were there at a specific time?

Preferably not London it’s an expensive crime ridden dump. Also full of elitist snobbery. Lots of other great places though, Cornwall is god’s back garden, if you like the great outdoors and hiking then there’s the Peak District and the Lake District. York is another place for tourism due to history, also Roman cities like Bath or Chester there’s still a Roman wall that goes all around the city of Chester plus the Roman gardens and the amphitheater is still there.

Venetian is not a dialect: it doesn’t come from italian, it comes from latin, like the others romance languages. All the local languages of northern Italy, like lombard, piedmontese, venetian and friulano are in the same branch of french. Sometimes they are more similar to french, occitan, catalan or spanish than to italian

Very informative. How accessible/difficult is the Venetian dialect to you? (I believe you are from Tuscany?) Does the plural of fondamenta (fondementae?) mean the street fronts more than one canal?
@WhatashameMaryJane
@WhatashameMaryJane 4 года назад
Hi Sean. I'm from Friuli, the region next to Veneto, which has its own language, that has nothing to do with Venetian, but in some small areas of our region some versions of Venetian dialect have survived too. We've been part of the Venetian Republic for three and a half centuries. To us Veneto is a very comprehensible dialect. Even if in some cases, if spoken in a very close manner, it might be difficult to understand. Fondamenta refers to the street rather than the canal. But I might have misunderstood your question.
@seanwalker4868
@seanwalker4868 4 года назад
@@WhatashameMaryJane Sorry. lol In the video you mentioned that Fondamenta is a street that runs along water. You also said there was a plural form of it - I assume it is spelled Fondamentae. But you didn't mention what the plural form of it refers to. It could be multiple streets or a single street that fronts more than one canal.

Very advanced Mary Jane. When I worked for National Geographic syncing up film and video was how we did a lot of the audio work. From what you have shared of Italy it's a lot like the deep south in the USA. 35 degrees is kinda cold. Wow, Italy gets cold. It's 75 degrees in Phoenix, AZ. It's a great time to be here before it gets super hot. In June it will be over 100 degrees.
