Part of my STFM motherboard series.
I've previously recapped my Falcon's PSU and installed a custom-designed Exxos PSU in my STE, so, to complete the set of obvious retro machine PSU upgrade options, today I modify a Meanwell industrial PSU for my STFM.
I re-use the bracket from an old PSU, but find it hard to make the Meanwell fit accurately. Power switch and the IEC socket also have to be forgone.
Better than using an unmaintained original? Yes.
Better than a recapped original? No, but safer.
Better than the Exxos supply? Not by any measure, unless you're really pushed for price.

Nice video! I typically use the RD-35a as it is much more compact as it's easier to fit especially on the original bracket and inside a case. It also matches the output of the original PSU more closely. I have fit an RD-50a as well, just very snug and can't use the RF shielding.

Yes, that one looks absolutely ideal!

Do you need the rf shielding these days?

Great stuff! I just got a 520 STFM that has the RD-50A installed, and like Greg said "...just very snug and can't use the RF shielding." It came without the shield, but has the standard power switch and IEC jack. BW's Technoshed

The "swelling" 400V Cap must not be faulty. I also re-capped my 1040STFM PSU and removed the plastic thing after to see that the vent of the Cap is still good and not blown. This plastic cap is just for safety reasons in case the Cap really blow up to prevent more damaging to the rest of the PSU. But in fact the caps are that old it's better to re-cap all to give it a longer lifetime. :)

Loved the video! Do you plan to make another (small) video about adding a switch to this PSU?

Many thanks. If I get fed up of pulling it in and out of the wall socket, I may. I’m still also irritated by the fact only one screw goes in. Too many projects, too little time, alas!

Do you have a link for 3d printed Atari ST Case?

No, I don’t believe anyone has published one yet.

Thanks, I have two 1040stf and a 520 st fm board that was hacked on by me as a teen I ordered one of these power supplies and am attempting to fix the damaged 520 . I'll probably put it in an old PC case and put all my mods on it. Leaving the 1040 s stock and original. Should I recap the motherboard?

I haven't recapped any of my motherboards yet, although the reset circuit can be a bit flakey after all these years and that big cap is ripe for a servicing. I would probably only concentrate on them unless you see a lot of jailbars or have other interference. The motherboards are quite delicate and I'd say pouring unnecessary heat into them is probably a higher risk than any of the smaller caps are.

@@thetechnoshed the big cap right after the ps was bad as usual. Some of the ones near the shifter were also slightly bad and got rid of the lines on the monitor when I replaced them . I bought the cap replacement kit from exxos as I was lazy about ordering and so I just replaced the ones I got in the kit.

Crimp with the part near the handle the lug sticking out goes in the middle to squeeze the middle down

That’s interesting. I’ll try that next time. So what are the coloured indents at the top for?

@@thetechnoshed I will have to did my old pair out I was going from memory and my wire strippers have crimpers at the bottom like yours 3 sizes small to large 0.5-1 mm2,1.5-2.5mm2,4-6mm2

Why is it safer than original? Should I recap my original if it appears to still be working ok?

Old PSUs slowly fail losing regulation, increasing ripple or injecting voltage spikes. I don’t want to lose custom chips on my machines through a lack of maintenance. Especially on the Falcon.
