I took my Exam today 06/29/2022 and Passed both parts on my first try. I want to thank u so much for these videos. I watched them everyday for a week and even in my sleep. I kept my phone on repeat. I was so nervous I almost didnt take the test. I tried to reschedule when I arrived. After deciding to take it and passing, one of the instructors told me I did Great and reminded me of how I almost didnt even take it. Thank u again..

how do you know you have to stop counting, l mean when are you supposed to stop counting?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 7 лет назад
YOU are the one who is timing this skill. There will be a clock above the bed that you can use for timing. Pick a starting point and say "Start" out loud. This will tell the evaluator when you start counting, so they will begin counting at the same time. When the second hand returns to the starting point (one minute), say "Stop" so the evaluator knows when you stop counting so they can stop at the same time. This ensures you are starting and stopping at the same time and counting the same respirations. This is the only way they can grade accuracy because breathing patterns may change minute to minute. To evaluate, they have to count the exact same respirations as you do. So, you say start, you say stop, you control the timing. Make sure you count for one full minute though - that is specified in the care plan! Hope this helps!

This really gonna help me for my exam in two days have one question I think you have to wash your hands before placing the call night right?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 5 лет назад
Actually, no. The call light is handled by the patient - and patients in bed will scratch what itches...and then use the call light. That call light is not clean. Either is the privacy curtain. Or the bed controls. EVERYTHING in the patient environment can transmit pathogens to your clean hands after you wash them...which you can then transmit to others. So, you must complete your skill, including the closing, BEFORE washing your hands. The only thing you are allowed to touch after washing your hands is the pen and documentation sheet. We cover this in depth in our lesson on The Closing in our FREE online test prep course on courses.4YourCNA.com. It has way more information in an interactive format that is way more helpful that simple skills videos. Check it out! :-)

The checklist is MINIMUM skills competency...that means that it is not meant for learning the skills, only grading the skills. So, some actions may be performed that are not listed on the checklist because they are not GRADED items. But that doesn't mean that you will be marked off if you do those steps, because they aren't graded. Read and follow the care plan, pay attention to safety, infection control and patient rights and you will do great. You might be interested in our online FREE CNA test prep program at courses.4YourCNA.com. It's free, it goes WAY beyond the videos and it provides test-specific information. With NNAAP, I have to state that I will count his respirations?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 7 лет назад
Every state is different, but when you tell someone you are counting their respirations, they will subconsciously change their breathing patterns (speed up or slow down), which means you will not get an accurate reading. Telling the patient that you will check their vital signs is preferred, so that you obtain a valid reading. For states that test through Prometric, this is a graded checkpoint - that you do NOT tell a patient that you are counting their respirations. Hope this helps!

Can we use our timer on our phone for this skill? How are we supposed to know when 1 minute is up?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 6 лет назад
No, for the exam you are not allowed to have any electronics in the testing room (including phones). A clock with a second hands will be above the bed during the skill for you to use for timing purposes (as in this demonstration). Pick a starting point on the clock, say "Start" out loud and count the patient's respirations until the clock reaches that starting point again and say "Stop" out loud. Make sure the second hand goes ALL the way around to the starting point. Hope this helps!

I heard there’s a trick where you can lay your hand on the patients back or shoulder to help count respiration as well. Is that allowed for New York State?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 3 года назад
This patient will be lying in bed for this skill, so putting your hand on their shoulder or back would be difficult. Laying your hand on someone's chest (especially a female) may be awkward. Also, the weight of your hand may limit chest rise, so this is not recommended. If you need to use anything, use the alcohol pad that is provided at the testing center. They are cheap, disposable and readily available in the testing center (and clinical settings). Good luck on the exam! Please subscribe to our channel!

Na.Patty if you get a respiration of 21 per minute is that accurate or I must get from the range of 12-20? Please tell me thank you
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 4 года назад
Normal range is 12-20. That doesn't mean your patient MUST be in normal range. You count the respirations for one full minute (no matter what number you get). If that number is between 12-20, you simply chart it because it's normal. If you get less than 12 or more than 20, you tell the nurse. But you always count for one minute (not until you get a certain number). Hope this helps.
@deborahdavilmar6844
@deborahdavilmar6844 3 года назад
@@4yourcna what if you take the clinicals exam and take respiration and it’s over 20 respiration? Is that an automatic fail because it’s inaccurate if it has to be in the range from 12-20
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 3 года назад
@@deborahdavilmar6844 For the EXAM, you count respirations for one full minute and chart your reading. Period. Just count for a whole minute and write it down. It doesn't have to be a certain number or in a certain range of numbers. You count breathing for one full minute - no matter WHAT number you get - and write that down on the documentation form provided. The evaluator is ALSO counting the breathing at the same time you are. They will write down the number they get. If your number matches their number (or is within 2 breaths on either side of their number) you are accurate. For the exam, accuracy is NOT graded by comparing your number to NORMAL values - it is graded by comparing your number to the EVALUATOR'S reading. So, whether the reading you get is within the normal range is totally irrelevant, it's whether the number you get is near the number the evaluator got. So, to demonstrate, during the exam, you count 24 breaths (because the other person playing the patient is nervous because they are there to test too). You write down 24 - the number of breaths you counted - on the form provided. The evaluator counted at the same time and got 22. They wrote that number down. Your reading is within 2 of their reading, so you are accurate. Even though the number is not in the normal range, that doesn't matter. Just count the breathing for one full minute (no matter what number you get) and write it down for the exam. In a clinical setting, if that number is above 20 or under 12, report it to the nurse. It's that simple.

It's so difficult for me to keep track of time and watch respiration, what can I do?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 6 лет назад
You should pick a starting point on the clock that is easy to remember (like "12") and say start. You will only glance up every now and then to see where the second hand is, but most of your focus is on the patient's respirations. You do not stare at the clock - just glance occassionally, more frequently as the second hand gets closer to the starting point. With a little practice, it comes natural! Best of luck! :-)

In New York you can’t do that at all and have to glance at the clock
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 6 лет назад
You cannot stare at the clock and count respirations. You cannot stare only at the chest and time the skill properly. Whether you use a watch or a clock, the procedure is the same. You will pick a starting point and say "Start" out loud, turn your attention to the patient to count the respirations, and glance occasionally back at the timing device (watch or clock) to determine when the minute is over and say "Stop". For Prometric testing centers (which includes New York), you are not able to use electronic devices (such as stopwatches or cell phones) to time the skill - it must be done on an actual analog timekeeping device with a second hand. Hope this helps!

Why do you offer them a magazine? Is this really necessary?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 6 лет назад
For the exam, you must address comfort needs (both physical and emotional). Offering a magazine is simply one way of addressing comfort needs, but you must SOMEHOW address this. Hope this helps! :-) If you are enjoying these presentations, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a thumbs up!

This was not helpful. How do you count the respiration meaning how to multiply.
@shauna6046
@shauna6046 Год назад
You count it as breathing in and out as 1 breath

Disturbingly, I keep counting 10. How much am I allowed to be off?
@mercurialsilver5688
@mercurialsilver5688 6 лет назад
I count 3 by the first 15 seconds. Is that where the problem is. Because it looks like a couple might be subtle here.
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 6 лет назад
Please remember that this is a demonstration and not all respirations will be visible due to changing camera angles. Please practice this on a live person, counting for 1 full minute. You are allowed to be off by 2 breaths in either direction from the evaluator's readings to be considered accurate. Thank you.
