In neuromuscular disease and spinal cord injury, measure lung volume recruitment with a breath-stacking bag (LVR bag) to compare the maximum insufflation capacity (MIC) and the patient’s spontaneous vital capacity (VC). The difference between the two variable (MIC-VC difference) demonstrates the effect of routine lung inflation and assists with the assessment of disease severity. The MIC-VC lung volume difference also correlates with glottic function, the patient’s ability to cough effectively to clear secretions and ability to be successful with mouthpiece ventilation.
Greg has no measurable VC and in this video, his measured MIC when breath-stacking with the bag is 4.86 L (MIC-VC difference is 4.86 L).
