Instructions and tools used are listed below:
I really struggled with how to easily describe determining measurements and did the best I could to do so.
I wanted to do a video where I went into detail on determining measurements for crafting. I was asked to do this video and hope it's helpful for those who are metric users or are new to determining measurements.
When using any measuring tool, count the number of dashes between the inch mark (don't count the first large line) and the next inch mark. It should have either eight or sixteen notches. Often times, the quarter inch, half inch and three-quarter inch will have a longer dash than the marks in between for ease of use.
You should first count the dashes, and if there are eight between one and two inches, then the second dash is 2/8th of an inch (or 1/4 of an inch), the fourth dash is 4/8th (or 1/2 of an inch), and the sixth dash is 6/8th (or 3/4 of an inch.)
When using a tool with sixteen dashes between one and two inches, you'll count them and the easy numbers to remember are
4 is 1/4
8 is 1/2
12 is 3/4
If you need to find 5/8 on the tool that is in 16th, then you multiply the 5 x 2 to get 10 and then 8 x 2 is 16 so you are going to count to the 10th dash (not counting the first dash that has the inch number written on it). You'll also note that often your tool will have longer dashes for 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 and with a tool in 16th, will have a small dash for 1/16th (or the first line after the inch mark) and then a little longer dash for 2/16 or 1/8....Always remember that if you can divide the top number into the bottom number, you can reduce it to the smaller number....For instance, if you have 8/16th, you can divide 8 into 16 and that is 1/2.
I hope this helps those of you who struggle with measurements or are new to them.
Martha Stewart Score Board-This tool is no longer available, but the most similar tool I've found to it is the Stampin' Up Score Board.

Metric is truly easier when that is what you learn. But of course most of us learned in inches and really struggle with the metric measures. So glad you covered this topic. I can always use a brush up.

So glad to help...Metric is easier, but crafters and our craft tools are still primarily in inches, so I wanted to make sure all viewers had a video on inches....

Sandy you took me back to school with the measurements, I think they teach decimal in school now but I am still in inches , old school. Thank you for all your video's . Hugs from the UK .

I wonder how decimals help kids read a ruler...I had a tough time figuring out how to explain this, since I'm not a teacher, but glad it was a refresher...Don't you primarily use metric in the UK?
@cathmillward3585
@cathmillward3585 5 лет назад
@@craftingforalmosteveryoneWe use a mixture of both because we trade with country's that still use imperial but the children in school are taught decimals so when we go shopping they show both measurements.

Gloria, I can't tell you how happy it makes me when I read that one of my videos has helped someone to better understand something. If you ever need me to clarify anything else, please let me know, as I'm thrilled to be able to help solve a few of the riddles of crafting...I had so many questions when I started crafting, and luckily, found the frugal crafter who really helped me with questions....I really hope you'll send me a photo of something you've created...saundralparker@yahoo.com Sandy

Hello Sandy!! I can’t believe you were able to teach this amazing measurement video so concise and easy to understand. I have searched and searched for an easy to understand video! I should have known you’d be able to help me!! You are really such an amazing teacher! My husband I call you my Crafty Professor now! Thank you so much for producing this informative awesome video. ~ Katz

I'll be changing my YT name to the Crafty Professor...haha, I love it...Thank John for me (and you) for such a nice compliment.

Sandy i think that if someone is having trouble with measurements this will diffently help. Great video! It is funny that the US is the only place that I know of that uses inches etc. When I was in school they said we were going to metric. That was a long time ago.

I wonder why I'm not appearing there. I had a few weeks where I didn't post much because Rich got shingles and a bad cold, and then I got the cold, so we didn't have many videos. I've been posting three or four in the last week and more to come...I'm bad on the horse, haha....Thanks for asking...You might want to unsubscribe, then subscribe and push the bell so you do get notifications..I'm not sure if that will work or not, but hopefully it will..You might not have to unsubscribe either, just didn't know if the bell is always there or not....Sandy

I really struggled with how to explain it and am glad you thought I did a great job. I thought I was confusing....I like how you remember the small dashes are smaller measurements. How would you explain 5/8" when using a tool that's in 16th? That's where I went into math and wondered if there was an easier way to understand it.....

I had a job where we measured in 1/8ths. And then had to convert to decimal and put on a spreadsheet I just learned it plus I cook and measure cups are fractions. But my job is where I really learned eights.. 1/8 = .125 1/4= .250 ect. Now I dont know 1/16ths. On converting into decimals
@craftingforalmosteveryone
@craftingforalmosteveryone 5 лет назад
I thought it was odd that some of my craft tools are in 8th while others are in 16th, and if you're used to the metric system, I think our craft tools would be kind of tricky. I had a hard time explaining measurements and realize I'd be a poor math teacher....thanks for your note...Sandy
