The piano player is Jim Steinman, he's the man who wrote all of the songs. The two of them came together to form one of the greatest singer-songwriter teams ever.

The album notes list Roy Bittan of the E Street band as a session player. Not sure, but I think the guy with the glasses is him. Stienman also is in the video.
@chicochi3

@Thomas Burch OK. I went to the original video and put it on full screen since I really can't see well with it being so small and stopping when I am trying to look. And my facial recognition technology (which I don't have BTW) tells me that the pianist with the glasses is Roy Bittan and pianist later in the video is Jim Steinman. Since videos were seldom if ever filmed over a one day period it probably has to do with who could show up for work on the day they were filming. And I believe the bass player visible in part of the video is Kasim Sulton. And the guitarist is Todd Rundgren. And the pianist you are actually HEARING throughout the video is Roy Bittan because video is not live. The performers are simply miming to the studio produced recording. When MMBxMOB asked "What is that?" it was definitely the piano.

I remember learning about Meat Loaf's death in the wee hours of the night, like way after midnight. And then I couldn't help it, I had to listen to this song. The lyrics were just too perfect for the moment. When morning came...he was gone. Like a bat out of hell, I'll be gone when the morning comes Oh, when the night is over, like a bat out of hell I'll be gone, gone, gone Like a bat out of hell, I'll be gone when the morning comes But when the day is done and the sun goes down And the moonlight's shinin' through Then like a sinner before the gates of Heaven I'll come crawlin' on back to you...

From the Google: "As a singer, he had astonishing capacity. In his songs, he can be heard singing from a bass F2 to a stratospheric falsetto E♭6, and everything in between. Vocally, he is a heldentenor, with a powerful, dramatic voice in a tenor register, with huge bodily resonance."

He gave you everything, he said in his head he lived his songs everytime because to him if he could not use his emotions to tell the story then he shouldn't sing . Now *THIS* is how you react to Meat Loaf! All other reactors, take note. I legitimately cheered when you said: "We're having that part, again", laughed when you gave up and walked away while at the same time I was blinking back tears. Just a brilliant reaction, thank you so much. As for the piano player, the person you *see* in the video is Jim Steinman, who wrote all the songs. But the person you *hear* playing is Roy Bittan of Bruce Springsteen's E Street band. Jim played piano on the first live tour with Meat to promote the album, and is an accomplished pianist himself, but Jim wanted Bittan to play on the record. The drummer is Max Weinberg, also of the E Street band. The lead guitar is Todd Rundgren, who only agreed to produce the album because he thought it was a hilarious spoof of Springsteen. I never got that myself, and I think it was coincidence that Springsteen and Steinman just happened to be writing their songs at around the same time, but neither set out to "copy" or "spoof" the other. To give a literary analogy, I think of Springsteen as John Grisham, and Steinman as JRR Tolkien. The motorbike sound halfway through the song is Rundgren doing it on his guitar, and he left both Meat and Jim sitting there open-mouthed when he did the whole thing in one take, leading straight into the solo. Meat has called both Jim and Todd "a genius", and Jim has called Todd "a genius", so that gives you an idea of the hierarchy when they were all in the recording studio! Finally, that ending...it's only Meat holding a C6 note for seven seconds, no big deal... ;) There's a radio station here in the UK that plays nothing but classical music (Mozart, Bach, Brahms, Haydyn, opera, arias, movie scores etc). When Meat died last year, they put a post on their social media pages about his passing, paying tribute to his powerful, astonishing, iconic voice and nigh-on four-octave vocal range. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about his talent, I don't know what will. Once again, thank you for a wonderful reaction. I genuinely still have chills from watching it. Edit: oh, yes; and Meat would definitely love that nickname! ;)

"Bat Out of Hell" is a concept album, sometimes known as rock opera. A concept album centers around one theme or idea and should be listened to as a unit and not by individual songs. Other concept albums are Sgt. Peppers (Beatles), Tommy (Who), Queen II (Queen), Paradise Theater (Styx). There are many, usually in the late 60's through the 70's. They were very ambitious projects from very ambitious creative teams. They were hardly, if ever, the first album from the team like "Bat Out of Hell" was.

LOL!! I loved your intro to this. "Big Sexy". You nailed it right on the head. He was a 300lb sex symbol, and he never knew it. He was the most beautiful man in my eyes. His allure and his charisma were like no other. You mentioned that this sounds like I Won't do That. That song was off on his Bat into Hell album. This one is on his Bat Outta Hell album. Lol. The visual similarity is fantastic. The best way to define Meatloaf is rock opera. Jim Steinman was the musical genius of their collaboration, but Meatloaf was the absolute life and soul with his amazing vocals and performances. RIP, Meat. ❤❤

Remember, the name of the whole album is also the name of this song. It's like the overture in a classical piece, and that means you'll hear bits of themes from the whole thing. That's why you heard a riff from Two Out of Three at the beginning and Paradise is paralleled here.

I love Big Sexy, too! Love your comparisons, the algorithm brought me. I think I’ll sub and stick around if you don’t mind! There are only a couple hands full of artists like him, that just had bigger possibilities than existed at the time. Another example of theatrical rock is Queen and the genius of Freddy Mercury. Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. Prince and his Revolution. But I am a lyrics person. When they break through and have just nothing else like them, that innovation and passion and their heads in the sky with the possibilities, it is life changing. Michael Jackson, Jeff Lynne and ELO. The entire album and live concerts is a story. It is greatest listened to in order.

"Bat Out Of Hell" is NOT part 2 of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". "Bat Out Of Hell" if the 1st track on the album The songs "Bat Out of Hell"; "Heaven Can Wait"; and "All Revved Up with No Place To Go", were originally featured in Steinman's Peter Pan-inspired 1977 un-finished musical "Neverland", which was finally completed in 2018 and renamed Bat Out of Hell. Thus while "Bat Out of Hell" is part of a theme - it is completely unrelated to "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"

Good reaction my friend, but lose the "soap" when you describe these compositions. It can be called "rock opera", but calling it soap opera is inappropriate. ✌️🕊️ One of his last GREAT sessions was a duet with a younger lady named Marion Raven, called, "It's All Coming Back To Me Now". Prepare to have your mind blown again! 😊😁✌️🕊️

Meat Loaf has sung with Pavarotti. After singing in a Central Park production of Shakespeare's As You Like It in 1972, wealthy art patrons offered the 25-year-old $60,000 to train his voice and make his debut at the MET. "I went, 'No, I can't do that, because I'll wind up in prison for murder of the conductor.' I may be an opera singer, but I have the rebellious nature of a true rock and roller."

I understand Meat Loaf was great in concert. You might try John Prine, I'd suggest Bonnie Rait "Angel from Montgomery" as an introduction. He can really paint a picture with words,

When I was a kid in the '70s, my family lived uphill and through the woods from an outdoor concert venue. We could sit out on our patio and listen for free. I got to hear so many: The Allman Brothers, Blondie, Journey, Tom Petty, The Ramone, and many more, including this: Meat Loaf on the Bat Out of Hell Tour.

This is 26 years before "I won't do that" so no it's not part 2. LOL. As I mentioned before in the other vid, the girl in the video is not the actual singer. Foley gained public recognition through singing a duet with Meat Loaf on the hit single "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" from the 1977 album Bat Out of Hell.[5][6] Foley's part was recorded individually and in one take with Meat Loaf present in the room so she could sing in character.[7] Although Karla DeVito (who toured with Meat Loaf in support of the album) is featured in the music video, DeVito is lip synching to Foley's vocals.[8]

Imagine you're back in the 70's and this team shows up. Meat Loaf, Jim Steinman, and Todd Rundgren. And you've never heard anything like this before. Everything was done by order of Jim Steinman. He was the boss. BTW-Tudd Rundgren was previously producer at Apple Records (no relation to Apple Computers but they do like to sue them). At Apple Records Todd Rundgren was producer for a band called Badfinger who were probably the biggest act that Apple Records ever "discovered." Read the story of Badfinger some time. Biggest tragedy in the history of the music industry, but they were truly a great band. Jim Steinman (songwriter) plays keyboards. Todd Rundgren plays guitar motorcycle revving (on orders of Jim Steinman). Singers are Rory Dodd and Ellen Foley (although the female singer you are seeing is Karla De Vito. It's complicated). "Bat Out of Hell" was a concept album. You really need to listen to the entire story to know what they were doing.

That ending totally shows his opera training! It is absolutely appropriate to just react with "F* me!" He is just awesome. R.I.P. Jim Steinman and Meatloaf. Both of them worked with others but tbh Meatloaf wasn't as successful without Jim.

Not that anyone expects anyone to read comments on old videos, but in this case I'm going back to my youth when this album was released. We bought records on vinyl, and this song is side one song one. Paradise at the Dashboard Light is side two song one. As this song ends, those of us with the album would expect to hear the spoken word opening of the second song, "On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf...." You Took the Words Right Out of my Mouth. If you haven't done any of the others, I would ask you to react to each song in order on the album. The last song on side two was too long to be played on radio and could not be shortened. Meatloaf once said he thought it was the perfect love song, For Crying Out Loud.

This is probably the most well produced album ever. It was made when Bruce Springsteen was on hiatus from making records so they had the two best players from E. Street band, both among the top five in rock history on their respective instrument, Roy Bittan on piano and Max Weinberg on drums join them. Kasim Sulton, Roger Powell and producer Todd Rundgren from Utopia handles bass, synths and guitar respectively. Some tracks had Edgar Winter playing saxophone. Meat Loaf on lead vocals with Rory Dodd and Ellen Foley on backing vocals.

Talk about instrumentation, the motor cycle sounds were done by Todd Rundgren on the guitar

Todd Rundgren, who was crucial to this whole album even existing, on motorcycle guitar (whatever that is) for this song. Anyway, vintage rock opera from the '70s and one of my desert island albums. Thanks for playing it.

Unfortunately (but not unsurprisingly) he needed surgery on his throat after the Bat Out of Hell tour and missed the next planned album "Bad for Good" (Jim Steinman did the vocals on it instead). Meatloaf came back for the third Album but In my opinion, his voice never fully recovered. You won't hear anything quite as impressive as the ending we just heard on any later albums. However, as suggested by several other people, For Crying Out Loud, the last song on the the Bad Out of Hell album, will have you walking in and out of your room, if you can bring yourself to move at all. After listening to that (preferably after the whole album) I'm still left emotionally drained, 45 years or so since I first bought it.
