Yes! You would have to put on backing plate, install impeller, set clearance then disassemble and start installing seal. For a closed face impeller clearance might need to be checked while removing pump for maintenance, or checked with casing for new installation.
Improper handling & installation process of mech'l seal. Where are the extra cares needed in handling, reassembling, & installation? -proper positioning to its proper location is quite unclear. - the way he projects & carried out the installation is way out of professional, journeyman way. The way he tightened the stuffing box cover, may cause uneven contact(tilt) on matting surface of stationary & rotating sealing face.
I have to ask just because i do this for a living to we don't use oil because the pump is for drinking water or to water food we use soap but i was told it is so you don't role the seal and chance a leak because the seal will garb the shaft and role.
