HOWARD WALTER GILMORE won the Medal of Honor in 1943, after sacrificing his life to save his men. His final order was “Take her down.” That has become a legendary phrase in the Navy. As Gilmore’s story is told, footage of the USS Drum is shown and a description of life on a WWII submarine.
Sources used include “Silent Victory” by Clay Blair Jr.; Ancestry.com, Newspapers.com, Naval History and Heritage, The Lucky Bag (yearbook of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland) and exhibits at the USS Drum located in Mobile, Alabama.

Sorry! I wish there were more of me. I’m a bit jealous of creators who have partners to share the work. But I was also super sick for two weeks with RSV. My kiddo brings stuff home. It seems I’m sick more often than I used to be. When my voice goes I can’t do much if it isn’t recorded already.

Sorry, I worried about that but I really didn’t go into much technical detail really. It was definitely a land lubber reporting a few of the informational signs on the tour, lol. Maybe my next will be more her style. I think I’m going to cover a massacre from the 1930s.

great info, but me being German, you should should look at the stories of U boat crews. and we and the English often wonder why you give out your medal of Honour so easily ??. look at the medals of honour given to the soldiers at wounded knee, shocking for all, but thanks for the insight .

They are not commonly given out but you are absolutely correct about Wounded Knee. That was not normal though, and was probably done to make it appear more like a battle than a massacre. If memory serves I think they were taken away in recent decades. I remember being so shocked and angry when I learned about those medals. Disgraceful. I would happily do a Uboat episode. There is one in Chicago. Now that I know so much about US submarines I would be fascinated to see that U-boat and do an episode, next time I’m in Chicago.

@@tomhirons7475 I know of it but have never seen it in its entirety. I’m certain I would love it. I actually used a super short clip in this of them firing torpedoes.
