In this Video I am going to discuss Median Nerve Compression in wrist which causes Numbness in Hands and this condition is called as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
There can be different reasons for Numbness in Hands but in this Video I am going to discuss Carpal Tunnel Syndrome specifically.
There is a fibrous Band in our Wrist under which there is a Nerve which is called as Median Nerve. This nerve supplies thumb, Index finger, Middle Finger and Radial half of our Ring Finger. If there is accumulation of fluid around this Nerve or there is inflammation of Muscles around this Nerve then there is Median Nerve Compression which causes Numbness in One Hand or both Hands. This condition is called as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Symptoms of this disease are
1. Pain in one Hand or Both Hands which mostly occurs at night
2. Numbness in Hands
3. Weakness of Muscles of Hand and Fingers
Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are
1. Trauma to Wrist bones causes Median Nerve Compression
2. Obesity
3. Pregnant Women
4. Diabetic Patients
5. Patients Having Renal Problems
6. Goiter Patients
7. Patients Having Arthritis
8. Patients having Vitamins Deficiency
9. Patients Having Excessive Alcohol Consumption
10. Old Age
11. Patients Having Repetitive Movements of Hands in their professional line of Work
12. Female Patients which are obese and aged more than 40 Years
Treatment
First line of treatment for this disease is NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) and topical Gels which are applied on the Wrist.
Wrist Splints are advised to the patient which stop movement at the wrist joint and relieve symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Patients are advised to take rest from their Work if it involves Repetitive Movements of their Hands e.g. in Drilling or in Freelancers who use excessive Keyboard etc.
Physiotherapy is also advised to the patients undergoing from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Patients are also advised to take treatment for underlying Risk Factor.
If above mentioned treatment methods fail then Cortisone Injection for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is advised to the patients which reduces inflammation around Median Nerve.
Final Resort for this condition is Surgery to relieve Compression on Median Nerve by cutting Fibrous band which was previously shown in animation Video.
