Hi everyone! I recently finished a pathology rotation so I just wanted to come here to share with you my experience. Overall, the rotation was a lot more interesting that I thought it was going to be. I really enjoy the microbiology lab mainly because micro was a topic I struggled with during the first two years of med school. I find that learning things in practice or by doing allows me to commit to memory much better than just reading from a text book.
Hope you all enjoyed and I'll see you again next time!

Thanks for this video! I'm currently working in a clinical lab as a technologist and am going through the application process for med school. I love my work so much that I'd like to eventually be a pathologist. It's nice to hear a little bit about a pathology rotation!

So I am a freshman in college, and I'm super interested in going into orthopedic surgery and I find myself pausing your videos like 5000000 times and writing down all the terminology before I hit my Bio classes and O'Chems and mainly the labs. But I just want to thank you for finding time to upload these videos. If you weren't told you're a wonderful blessing, now you know. :)

too bad DO school does not have a pathology residency program what's the point of doing the rotation you can never become a pathologist
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 лет назад
+TRUTH BE TOLD As a DO you can apply to both DO and MD residencies. So as a DO you can still become a pathologist. My preceptor was actually a DO.

Did you see any molecular genetics pathology on your rotation? If so, what did you think about that subset of pathology? Would you say this is less common than microbiology or other types of clinical pathology? Overall, did you enjoy either clinical or anatomical pathology more? I'm actually interested in going into pathology and was so excited when I saw your video because it seems like there aren't too many resources or youtubers talking about pathology!
@drjennale
@drjennale 8 лет назад
Unfortunately our lab sent out all the specimens that needed molecular genetic pathology so I cannot speak on the different aspect of that subspecialty. The microbiology lab was a very prominent aspect and I would I would say that it is more common than molecular genetics. I found both clinical and anatomical pathology interesting but pathology is not my passion (but it seems that it might be yours - which is awesome!) - I like talking to patients and building physician patient relationships. If you are interest in pathology and interest in shadowing a pathologist, I recommend contacting your local hospital. Every hospital usually has a pathologist. You might have to go through a whole screening process but it will be worth it.

Hi Jenny!!! Quick question: So when you do rotations, youre only required 5, right? Pediatrics, General syurgery, OB/GYN, internal med and family med---so is the pathology and derm two of your electives? How do you choose your electives? And how many do you have rotations in? THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH for your videos!
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 лет назад
Rebekah Depends on your school. But usually 3rd year requirements are Family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, OBGYN, emergency medicine. If you're a DO then you also have 4 weeks of OPP. 4th year it is mainly electives - 10 weeks of surgery, 10 weeks of internal medicine, and 16 weeks unrestricted. This is to allow you to do audition rotations at your residency of interest. Again this is variable from school to school.

They say doctors are sad after 5 years of practice because of personal time they lack with their family and friends and everything else... I really want to be a medical doctor but jus scared of not being happy I need your advice on why I should still venture into medicine
@drjennale
@drjennale 8 лет назад
I do admit that most doctors are overworked and many underpaid but most physicians I know are very happy. Even with a full school/work load, I am able to still find time for my family and friends ... and apparently RU-vid. The reason to pursue medicine is because it is your passion. I wanted to become a doctor because of the patient doctor bonds I wanted to build (which I couldn't find anywhere else). Burn out is common in any profession, you just have to find a way to handle stress.

If you are young put in the hard work when you get a little older you can put in a lot more time with your family and you will have more money saved and invested. All careers are like this by the way you need work harder when you are younger so that you can save up money and build your career. Careers that do not require hard work tend not to be that well paid and when you are a little older you more than likely will regret having not put the work in.

Hi! I got accepted to PNWU a couple weeks ago and was wondering how you like it. I'm pretty sure I'll end up going there and wanted to know more about the quality of the rotations. I'm leaning towards internal medicine, but I'm also considering family med and peds.
@drjennale
@drjennale 8 лет назад
Elaine congratulations! There are some good rotations and others not so great - this can be said about most places you go to. But overall I've had great experiences - lots of hands on learning. And it's ok to not know what specialty you want to go into. You'll have a better idea after starting clinical rotations. I was interested in FM, OB, and Surgery at one point.

Unfortunately, no. I spent most of my time behind a microscope. But I had a lot of freedom during this rotation. If you're interested in something, the pathologist encourages you to take initiative and seek out those opportunities on your own.

@dehall4226
@dehall4226 7 лет назад
thenightdances21 most med schools don’t require it because it’s something you’ll learn in med school. Basic biology is all that’s really needed for the MCAT. But taking a course in undergrad about human anatomy probably would help.

How much time do you have outside of med-school? How do you make have money today? How did you make money when first going into med school?
@drjennale
@drjennale 8 лет назад
It depends on what rotation you're on, or how much time you need to study to retain information. This is different for everyone. I try to take at least one day off a week. I currently do make any money, I actually accumulating debt while attending med school LOL but I feel that it is worth it because it is my passion. Like most students I took out school loans to pay for medical school.

@drjennale

Thank you so much! I am slightly confused by your first question. As for your second question - surrounding yourself with motivated people. It helps when there is someone to pick you up when you're feeling down. And take breaks. No one can go at 100 all day everyday. Work hard when its time to work, and enjoy the breaks because you deserve them.

Are you able to do a video on your journey as a college freshmen to 4th year medical school? I am currently in my first semester in the Histology Technician program at my local community college. Are you able to give me any tips? I am currently doing the 45 minute study and 15 minute break routine. Also, do you think is is doable to work part-time 16 hours and attend the 21 month program? I am leaning towards quitting my part-time job but I will be a little tight paying for school. I know my parents will help me out with gas and insurance. I am still debating.
@drjennale
@drjennale 8 лет назад
I didn't attend an official program since I volunteered at the history core and learned everything before I was hired. If you feel like you can keep the job without your school work suffering then I say more power to you. But that being said, when I started med school, I knew that there was no way I could focus on my studies and hold part time job. In my opinion, you'll have a good paying job after you finish your program - just a little delayed gratification that is all.

medical school in the US compared to foreign medical school is very different. We attend undergraduate school for 4 years before attending medical school which is another 4 years. Since you will already have finished medical school - you might just need to talk the US Board exam. To actually become a practicing physician, you would have to attend residency, and that they may make you retake in the US (residency programs are anywhere from 3-5+ years). They usually start paying you in residency but not much - I am unsure how much it would cost for foreign students.
