There is no reason to get bored of anything in dentistry. There is always something new to learn. Very few people are professionals in general dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery. There is no reason why you cant take CE courses to start doing other procedures if you're bored
Thank you so much for this video! I am 14 and I’ve been considering on being a dentist! I always get asked the typical question ,” what do you want to be when you grow up?” And I always answered with “I don’t know”, but now i think that im sure I want to be a dentist of some sort!

If really, really curious about a dental career: 1. Shadow a dental student, not a dentist. The dentist has already “made it.” The dental student is struggling with the stress and reality of academics. 2. Buy a book on “head and neck” anatomy. Buy a book on dental anatomy and an anatomically correct typodont (dental model). Memorize every single illustration and nook and cranny. With a dental mirror & dental probe, study your own dentition. See if your family will let you examine their dentition. You can sterilize the instruments in a pressure cooker. 3. Take a jewelry-making class that emphasizes wax sculpture, rubber base impressions and the “lost wax” technique. Take impressions of the typodont teeth and cast them during the jewelry-making class. Sculpt from wax models of the typodont theeth and cast them. 4. View every single RU-vid video dealing with dentistry. 5. Earn a BS Biology, Health Science. Good Luck.
I graduate from highschool in a few days, I’m really interested in both chemistry and biology and am trying to decide which career would suit me better. I’ve always found the way the body functions and the idea of saving life’s awesome, but i also have good hand skills that i could use in dentistry .
I'm a future dentist, currently in first year of Med school. In India dentistry is seen as a profession for people who aren't smart enough to get into medicine. no one does it out of love (atleast the one's ik see it as a losers degree) and i genuinely love what I'm doing and no part of me has ever regretted my decision to become a dentist.
Private dentists are more likely to provide patients with what they need? Surely you mean provide patients with what they need and want. The NHS provides people with what they need, whether a dentist is willing to undertake that treatment at the rate of NHS payment is another matter
@@FutureDoc I left neurology practice 20 years ago so can't comment knowlegably about the differences now. Some things: Admission to med school requirements, Tuition, funding, debt, residency admissions - specialty and location, practice location, practice type, salaries, practice expenses and hours ( Many more I've doubtlessly left out ). Curriculum may be the only commonality between US and UK docs and dentists.
Hey Doctor. I’m really unsure about which one to go for, your video was extremely helpful, but I am still unsure as I’d love to become a doctor and go for medicine, but the amount of years it takes to actually graduate and BECOME a doctor, is too long and I don’t think I’d want to be using half my life studying, when I could do something else, that is shorter and earns me allot of money. Dentistry has also been on my mind, it only takes 5 years, but I want to have a huge impact on someone’s life, like becoming a doctor, dentists do too but Just not as much you know. I’m really unsure, I don’t know what to do. I’ve always wanted to become a doctor, always has been my dream, but the amount of years it takes, plus the amount you earn after years of studying in the UK, I don’t think it’s enough. Any advice?
Hello, both medicine and dentistry are challenging courses, they require a lot of time and dedication, and in the UK you won't be earning millions of pounds. A starting salary for a foundation doctor is 28,000 pounds annually. Once you become a registrar after multiple years of working in a hospital you earn 49,000 pounds a year. If you want to go into medicine, don't do it for the money. However, working in the medical field either as a dentist or doctor is extremely rewarding. It's unlike any other job, you are put in a very privileged position of being able to help others. Medicine as a science is beautiful and interesting, finding out how the human body functions and what we are made of is fascinating. It's a field that you will never get bored of, and in which you will never stop learning. If medicine has always been your dream, then go for it! But I'd suggest that you talk to some doctors from different specialities first so that you're 100% sure about going into medicine.
Hi doc, to be honest I entered medicine but I keep thinking that I’m interested in dentistry ( because I want to make good use of my hand skills I guess, without having to suffer the stress of being a surgeon) + I don’t really have a specialization in mind, so I don’t know if there’s something I’ll really enjoy There’s a slim chance that I can change to dentistry though. Anyways, I’m curious how you did both specialties? Did you start from scratch for both and get both degrees? How does it work? And do you think it was worth it?
Sameeeeeeeeeeeeee I’m a 3rd year medical student now and I’m still thinking about changing to dentistry but I’m too unmotivated to lose all that years . But i like to work with my hands so much
@@maisdawara3607 ooh Well I continued in medicine and so far I’m enjoying it alhamdulillah! I know exactly how you feel tho cuz I rlly like working with my hands too Hopefully you’ll find something you like whether it’s in medicine or you decide to switch ✨ My advice would be to try taking an elective in something you think you might like and see how it goes
One other thing to consider is may be as to who earns the prefix 'Dr' . Are dentists eligible? Many find the prefix as an honour / respect which can dictate their choice.
@@FutureDoc Hi no problem I love how you didn’t complete go bias for each one. Also when you gave the cons you made it so clear that in the end of the day it’s how you want the cons to be. You gave a brighter side in every con. You also went straight to the point but with great detail in such a little amount of time. I guess this made me appreciate it. Thanks 🙏
@@FutureDoc i really think dentistry is the better option for me :)) Taking medicine sounds fascinating but i dont like sticking to one job for long. And ive always wanted to have a side business since i love keeping myself busy as well as my options open!
@@gretace2474 Yes, it definitely natures your more creative side. Well if you'd like some help with applying, you know where we are. Happy to help as always :)
Medicine! Be a real doctor. I tried dentistry and it sucked. I got colitis & ended up with a permanent ileostomy. I changed majors to business & earned a “top 20” MBA. Only 3 subjects really matter: English, Math and Physics.
@@FutureDoc YES, YES & YES…BS Biology, GPA 3.4. 3yr Dental School, GPA 1.8. Got colitis & a permanent ileostomy. Three years to functionally recover. Many post-op appointments with therapists, surgeons & shrinks. Continually suffering through the Kubler-Ross stages of grief. Changed majors. MBA Marketing, GPA 3.4. Dental didactic was not difficult, just too much material - a data dump. Clinical too subjective - at the whim of your instructor. How did I go from A’s to D’s & back to A’s? Regrets: I wish I had never, ever pursued STEM, especially health science. Dentistry has ruined my health forever and I really, really resent it. As an military medic, I was über interested in health science and believed I should use my knowledge in aid of humanity - a life well-lived. Yeah, right…If I had a do-over, I would go into motorcycle sales and service. Enthusiasts pay tons & tons & tons of money for something they really, really, really crave, but actually don’t need - just the opposite of dentistry. When in doubt, reach for the money. Let someone else aid humanity. You - make as much money as you possibly can, in a way that doesn’t make you sick nor drive you nuts. 40 years later, my social security is still being garnished for dental school loans.
This might seem like a silly question but I’ve only ever considered dentistry so I’m a bit confused about medicine. What job does it give you straight out of uni? Does it just basically allow you to go into any speciality if you choose? I don’t really get it. 😭
You enter the Foundation Doctor Training Programme straight out of university, this is essentially a Foundation Doctor who works with some degree of supervision. After this you may apply to different training programmes for the specialty of your choice.
Once I finish dental school I can start working straight away at a dental practise, but when I finish medical school I have to spend more years working before I can properly start working? Pls help me understand
@@kingsafwaan9286 its dependent on your region. Dentist in California are dime a dozen. I think specialty in medicine offers more options and higher pay. Only way to make money in dentistry in usa is opening an office. If youre not business minded then not a good plan.
After graduation as a dentist you are ready to go😂 most dentists graduate having removed less than 20 teeth, having placed less than 10 crowns and fitted less than 10 bridges. In short they need a lot more training to be proficient
(Misunderstands the idea of relative vs absolute). A surgeon doesn’t come out of medical school having completed “less than 20” operations. They’ll have completed zero. It will take them years before they’re able to do even the most basic procedures without someone watching over their shoulder, unlike dentistry, where the first few months are spent honing skills they’ve already learnt (practiced during dental school - with someone watching over their shoulder) to perform basic procedures proficiently and independently.
Hi there, great video, many thanks. Quick question, for Dentistry and medicine, is it compulsory to take either physics or maths apart from the obvious bio and chemistry? I am interested in these two fields however I was hoping to study bio, chem and psychology in a levels. Looking forward to your response!
Hello, most universities require candidates to take Chemistry, followed by one of biology or physics, which means they don't care about your third subject, so you are able to take psychology! In fact, a lot of medical applicants do!
I still can't choose. Idk what i am gonna do. I need to choose til 20th august. I have enough points to get in a medicine (but not free education) and i have enough points to be a dentist(free education) i know to be a dentist is much more convenient in my situation but my heart tells me to study medicine but i am afraid of failing and hardness of the medical university
@@FutureDocYes my heart tells me to be a doctor but i am afraid of not studying well bc i am addicted to my phone and get distracted easily.I am afraid of being a bad doctor and medicine is not free for me it's expensive but dentistry is free so it wil be a huge loss of money if i drop out of medical school do you think medical university is super super hard? Do you think everyone can make it if they study?
I am actually in a very similar position minus the money problems (though I know that obviously makes it much more difficult for you), it's such a relief to hear someone say the same. I'd love to do medicine but I'm terrified I won't be able to manage my other responsibilities or look after a future family with the terrible hours of a doctor
Although it's a challenge, it's still possible to mould your career to work around your life and priorities. I know plenty of doctors whom have fantastic work/life balance. Myself included 😁
Hello I graduated from high school some days ago, Am pretty sure I want to work in medicine or dental field, but I don’t know what major to take, which would be a good one to choose and go for? If I want to become a dentist?

You can have a lab make them for you. Most dental offices use labs for these. I also know some dentist use the labs and then just customize to their preferences. For example, the dentist may want to alter the shade/color of veneers themselves to best suit their patient.

I'm a 4th year dental student (total years=5) in a top university in foreign country, I would like to go to work as a general dentist in the states but I don't know what are the specific requirements to get a licensure as a foreign dentist, how does that work, how long and how hard? Hope to get answers that may help clearing my vision and thanks for any response 🙏👍
Hi @FutureDoc, please can you answer my question.. I had done Bachelor's of dental surgery from India and MSc Oncology from UK.. Currently I'm pursuing oral and maxillofacial surgery(omfs) from India.. Can you please tell me how to get into medicine (any country would be fine with me) after completing my OMFS degree? As you have told in your video that you hold both medical and dental degrees, please help me regarding this.. Thank you

Today my English teacher really discouraged me and told the class that I Wana pick those students who are weak in english and I can speak it fluently but grammatical errors are there sooo...
@@FutureDoc thank you doctor! But I wants to study in Dubai and I wanted to ask if it's okay not to be very excellent in english. Thanks for ur feedback 🙂
English is very important in all medical colleges in Arab countries. I failed in three subjects because of that, so you have to strengthen the language
@@markmohtar3503 often people who complain about their work are the same people who would complain no matter what they were doing. Jobs like medicine and dentistry are a privilege. Sure they’re hard at times and can eat at your time, but there are a lot of great aspects to both careers. You can make a career in either of these professions whatever you want it to be. Often stagnation is just a lack of imagination

After a level in heakth and social care can i study for dentist plzz tell me beause i am new in london so i dont now about subject so i chose wrong subkect now plzzzz tell me
That is one option, but currently the plan is to train in Maxillofacial surgery, which is slightly different. In the UK, it’s similar to a cross between ENT/Plastic surgery with a little orthopaedics thrown in for good measure
