The first major defeat the Europeans managed to inflict against the Turkish Empire was the Great Turkish War; with a coalition of Germany, Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Hungary and Venice. Ottomans didn't spare the Knights of Rhodes out of kindness. The Hospitallers just weren't giving up and had already killed tens of thousands of the Sultan's personal army. To extend the siege until every knight was dead would've simply not been worth it, so an honorary surrender was offered. Suleiman wasn't gonna waste time and resources for a couple hundred Christian knights when he had continental Europe in his sights. The Rhodes headquarters was one of the best defended fortresses in the world, and the Hospitallers were absolute demons. It ended up being a massive blunder, but at the time it was pretty reasonable to let the knights go.

The ottoman defeats at Malta and Vienna along with Muslim victories in yarmouk and qaddsyiah and Nahwand is a reminder for folks that numbers don’t guarantee you victories it’s the will power and motivation and strategy of your army and what types of generals you have that determine the outcome of the battle. In yarmouk and qaddysiah and nahwand the Muslim Arabs were heavily outnumbered and didn’t wear heavy armor while their opponents in all three of those battles had the more men and better armor yet they lost meanwhile in the siege of Malta and siege of Vienna the Muslim ottomans had the more numbers and didn’t have the heavy armor but the Christian Europeans did but they had a better strategy and better at siege warfare. Hence they won.

dont be silly. The majority of defenders were militias which wore little to no armour. The only really armoured people wpuld have bee a few maltese nobles and the knights

Something to clarify foe everyone. Most of the defenders were maltese militias called the dejma. No maltese was a knight of saint john, the knights themselevs numbered 541 men, the maltese about 5-9000 depending on source. The spanish in august sent a piccollo soccorso of 900 men.

When i say they should make this into a movie instead of another gladiator film i really mean it, the christians basically held a fort in a highly strategic position in malta in order to hault the ottomans from firther expanding their empires grip on the Mediterranean and their pirate raids for white slaves into western europe. It was incredible and the fact the knights stayed and defended for a dozen more years is incredible all in itself.
