If you think that a knight in a shining armor, was a good guy, think again. The knights during the medieval times were not good guys, but were actually cold heart killers!
When we think about knights, we usually have noble men in mind, heroic warriors whose gallantry was unsurpassed. We’ve all heard the tales of King Arthur and the knights of the round table, which included the dauntless and dashing Sir Lancelot and his spirited son Sir Galahad. But Arthurian legend is just that, legend, and knights in real life bore no resemblance to these romantic depictions. We might look at the oath the knights of the round table took, which was all about chivalry, not being greedy, not taking land by power, not being cruel, or murderous, to always be merciful and of course always to do your best to protect women - sometimes referred to as damsels. It all sounds good on paper, but it hardly mirrored reality. Welcome to this episode of the Infographics Show, How medieval knights were not noble, but cold-hearted killers.

It's just a bit weird for the rest of the nations of the Germanic language tree. We still have the word knight around too, it's spelled 'Knecht' and is largely used for farmhands or as an insult by school children :D But that's how the same word can have vastly different connotations in different areas. The equivalent of 'girl' (> Göre) is derogatory in German too, we use 'Mädchen' (> maiden). I'm sure there are reverse cases as well.

Interestingly enough, that quote is more true than many people might think when the knights of old are concerned. Chivalry as a code was very confusing and had as many loopholes as it did contradictions. For example: The protection of women was something that applied to noble women, often going hand-in-hand with the concept of courtly love, which in itself usually meant showing dedication and almost romantic respect for a noble woman, regardless of any actual interest or whether she was married or not, but I digress. The thing is, since this was expected of knights when it came to the treatment of noble women, the aforementioned loophole often allowed knights the unspoken but fully recognized freedom to do as he wished with peasant women, including rape and murder. When it came to loyalties, a knight was expected to show loyalty to their feudal lord as well as their king. If a lord decides to wage a war against the king, what was a knight in that lord's service expected to do then? Which mattered more: Fighting alongside the lord who granted you with wealth (and in some cases) further power of your own, or remaining a staunch and loyal supporter to the king of the land simply because they are the king regardless of their own merit? It was a complicated and contradictory system at best, and a self-destructive series of pitfalls at worst for one who was expected to follow it. Chivalry was just a way of trying to reel in the knights, make sure they were loyal, and in return point them in a direction where they could do as they wished to anyone a lower societal caste as long as they continued to serve the right people in whatever way they were ordered. A lot of people also think of Bushido in relation to Chivalry, but I personally don't think Bushido was really any better. The Samurai were honor-bound to serve their lord, and what was considered an honorable action was pretty much anything that they were ordered to do in service to their lord. If that meant burning a village, extorting or even killing the people therein, and sacking their goods, it was an honorable act. Say they were instructed to assassinate a rival lord and commit ritual suicide as recompense. This was considered an honorable act as well. What is truly honorable and what was once tolerated in order for those in a place of higher power to get what they wanted are two entirely different things, and in various instances history will be written in a way that does its dead-level best to either cover it up or otherwise hand-wave away as much of the ugly truths as possible. One thing I find fascinating about history though is that somehow the past can sometimes find ways of rearing the head of that ugliness in order to bring further insight and truth to the world of today.

This video forget the human element in the Medieval knights. The Knights are human outside of being use to kill enemies. Not every knight yearn to kill, just like every American doesn't yearn to kill. It's easy to say they are murderers, but when you're in war, the knight can lawfully kill the enemy as everybody in the world. What these guys want is the Knights to do nothing while the enemy is destroying their ancestor's village. Some commited horrendes crimes just for the sake of it but then they were killed by order of their lord. There is reputation and wealth to lose given by their lord. In war yes everyone killed each other and knights were elite soldiers but they were not evil for the sake of it. Most knights were deeply religious and so they had a code that they lived by.

They would do just about anything they were told to do. They were often powerhungry and brutish in behavior. These knights were not of orders but were essentially shock troops.

Yeah the specific word knight comes from necht or any variation of the spelling in Old English but the actual word itself is based on the German Knecht, meaning heavy soldier. This is a common theme across cultures. The warrior class (knights) are romanticized in stories and ballads, many of which are commissioned by their lords and kings to glorify those who serve them loyally. In the ancient days, what make a knight, a samurai etc... what was "noble" was loyalty to their king/master. They could be a mass murdering scumbag with no heart or humanity to speak of, but the stories would always portray them as honourable and chivalrous so long as they stayed loyal.

Charles the Rash was slain in battle and left on the field. His corpse was found 2 days later stripped of weapons/armor and preyed upon by wolves and crows. His head was sheared in half from a halberd. According to the chivalric code he was supposed to be ransomed. It soon began clear the chivalry had no place on the field and the romanticized idea of honor was relegated to tournaments instead. The end

History is written by the victor's. Probably not an exact quote but the idea is the same. Very seldom do you find history recorded by the oppressed or "losers" of the conflict. And when you do you'll find they portray their side as noble and right and the other side as barbarians. Even the written histories should be taken with a grain of salt in my opinion

MyRkAcc That was one of the problems. One of the cruelest guards was simply mimicking a character from the movie “Cool Hand Luke”. One of the prisoners faked a mental breakdown to get out of the experiment, so he could study for a test.Then of course there’s the fact that Zimbardo’s data is inconsistent. Nobody else has been able to replicate the results. That inconsistent data makes the experiment suspect.

1:20 This is actually partially false. It’s true that knights weren’t just of the peasant class, but they weren’t explicitly nobility. In early centuries, especially the dark ages, knights were typically soldiers trained and regularly upkept by lords. See, back in the day it was expensive as hell to keep a standing army around, so usually only a handful of men would be regularly trained, equipped, and paid as soldiers. As the dark ages came to an end many of these knights had grown wealthy and powerful, effectively turning them into the upper class nobility. That being said knights are actually relatively low in the hierarchy of nobility, often being the bottom or second to bottom rung of the ladder. It was often possible for those of the upper middle class with influence to have one of their sons trained as a squire. In some rare instances a man who’s proven himself to be a great asset to his lord or country would be awarded land, money, and the title of Knight.

Well yes, in the past killing was not looked down as today, in terms of societies ability to demand justice, law and order, and just general view of life. There were still laws of course and punishments for murder. War, battles, and disputes were common and looked as what a man needs to do, especially nobles in most of history. Though, these men could still be great people to their kingdom, empire, town, etc. It's perspective honestly.

Suppose you watch Shadversity. Just remember there are various versions of history based on beliefs and interpretation from many people from many backgrounds, and not all are recorded. It's hard to tell if everybody liked war and turned the blind eye to killing in the olden days, which beliefs were general and which were associated to some smaller group of people inside society, which records were sincere, which were personal and which were propaganda. Shad tried to answer the question about medieval notion of war for the best he can do in research and interpretation, mostly based on the notion that today's people are different from them, while pouring in a little bit of his own beliefs, and he said it was not the definitive answer himself.
@Korksbebig
@Korksbebig 5 лет назад
@@ViniSocramSaint I never watched Shads video on the topic, also interpretation of how people felt isn't unknown, we can guess and often times know that things are propaganda. Killing was not accepted easily, as I said, but it wasn't as strictly taboo as today. Leaderships could send people to death, crimes were punishable by death, and war was quite a normal idea. There are various versions of history but there is also the general connection of how each civilization existed or co-existed. Many times wars were easily sparked compared to todays standards and crimes were heavily punished.

@@Korksbebig Oh, ok then. Go check him out sometime if you didn't yet. He swings to the right when it comes to social stuff but he is neutral when it comes to castles and medieval weapons Now going on a little about what I think Yup. All we can do is guess. Sometimes we are spot on, sometimes we are simply tricked by beliefs or a false paths which evidences point at. I said that shad - and maybe you - use the notion that old people were different, I guess we are all the same, meaning we think in the same way, are affected by war in the same way, put up with or believe in bs in the same way, etc. That there were more conflicts solved by hand I don't doubt, and I also don't rule out good old corruption, abuse of power, religious ideals, deception and folklore also making some people spill some blood "for a better cause", and propaganda being used to glorify it while honor is mixed with success in war, so the younglings go fight while thinking they are gona have a blast and after learning it is not so good, stay fighting for "the honor". I also guess some people simply understood why they had to defend themselves or attack others, mostly out of desperation instead of tradition or even honor. All in all, I guess it's not like people were more ok with war and killing than us, it's just that they had to live with it in a more intense way. There were no pressure to follow human rights at the time, so people in general would not measure their actions as much and definitely not "stop to understand" most times. But we always had to live in society, so I guess we always had laws, some rights were still expected and the same kind of order as we use today was enforced, as having to respect others to certain extent, being punished if you don't have the power to get away with doing bad things and depending on the group of people, not having to care or, needing to be hostile or even take as much advantage as possible from the group's outsiders, misfits or lower classes Sometimes I guess the notion that caring about each other's rights and situations being a new thing is thrown too loosely, almost like the absolute default

But there had been so many types of Knights throughout these centuries that this video failed to mention, there was the mercenary Knights that function pretty much like top class merc already geared with their own equipment, household knights who were paid with wages by the wealthy nobles, roaming landless Knights, landowning Knights who acted as vassals and so on.
