What is the Mediterranean diet? The Mediterranean diet is a way of eating that's based on the traditional cuisines of Greece, Italy and other countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. Plant-based foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices, are the foundation of the diet.

Agree. I only use olive, avocado, or coconut due to arthritis for inflammation control. Refined vegetable oil is one of the worst things you can eat. Soybean oil is in everything we buy. Read the labels before you consume.

Absolutely! I'm a personal chef and integrative nutritionist (not an RD!) but have studied this and many other "lifestyle" diets. I'm flabbergasted by the amount of RU-vid vids that have MD's, who have little to no nutritional science education, tout this sort of stuff.

Canola oil? Has the dietician ever had her omega6:3 ratio measured - mine is 4.4 and I've not eaten even rapeseed oil for about 3 years or more. I use olive, avocado, coconut and butter/ghee with toasted sesame as an occasional 'flavouring' only. And what is the irrational fear of saturated fats - surely the SAD recommendations and it's failure and the re-examination of the evidence shows that saturated fat is not a proble.

Great video! Good idea. Love it. Some fact points which she had wrong.. Canola oil is refined, highly processed, not healthy. Full of omega 6 oxydative fat chains which is flamatory. Use the extra virgin olive oil. It still has 9% omega 6 and should not be heated too high because that will oxydate. Honey 50% fructose, just a little. Why promote sugar? Spinach is Amaranthaceae and not from the same familie as bok choy (Cruciferous=very healthy) and has the highest level of oxalate of any. Less is better. :)

I don't use any sort of sweetener for mine because I usually have carrots in it and they're a bit sweet on their own since I can get them fresh right now, but I don't think two tablespoons of honey spread between 4 people is a big deal. I buy local and it really does help with when I get hay fever or my cedar allergies in winter.

Agree about heating the olive oil. Avo oil can take more heat. Canola is a No No. I’ll need to read more about the spinach factor. I have heard it’s better for you either cooked or not cooked. I can’t remember off the top of my head. But I believe it’s better for you when it’s cooked not raw.

The North American Olive Oil Association has a lengthy article on trans fat. They cite many studies. Apparently olive oil is very stable & does not convert to trans-fat even at high temperatures past the smoke point. Avocado oil is very expensive. It is great to cook in a wok. They heat evenly & use little oil.

I grew up with a Greek dad who ate a pretty traditional Mediterranean diet, and don't recall soy sauce ever being a typical ingredient. That being said, this looks tasty and i'd def eat it with no complaints :) I've also read and heard people say to stay away from canola oil because it can cause or make inflammation worse. I was surprised to see it mentioned here.

I think she was trying to make this recipe accessible for everyone so it didn't seem so daunting to get started. Also, don't forget, spaghetti are noodles brought back to Italy by Marco Pollo from China. Tomatoes are from The Americas so spaghetti and marinara sauce didn't exist until at least the late 1500s coming from external contact with other cultures. Mix it up, spread your wings!

People are taking too many drugs to compensate for poor nutrition. Which is a shame since in a few minutes and for very low costs you can make a great dish this.

Have you read Why Some Like it Hot by David Paul Nabham. The optimal diet for a person is a combination genetics, environment, and culture. People of Mediterranean descent do wonderfully on that diet. Others, not as much. Dr Nabham is a ethnobotanist and studied the diets of native Americans south of Tucson (Pima, Papago, Apache, etc). there is no way people in that area could eat said Mediterranean diet before modern supply chains. And if you are Heinz 57 like I am, figuring out what works best is a little more complex than to eat like someone from a specific region. It's not a bad diet, but it isn't the wonderful magical diet that will cure all your ills. And, Food is Not Medicine by Dr Joshua Wolrich is another good reference.

I have high cholesterol, obesity, and fatty liver disease so the Mediterranean diet is a great option for me to try. My weakness is those processed foods, salts and sugars. I'm definitely researching this diet as it's a very reasonable, obviously healthy alternative. The Mediterranean diet really does rely on you cooking your own meals and for me it's a matter of laziness and lack of motivation I would have to get over with to curve my own eating habits which are honestly atrocious right now. This was a very informative video not just for a good recipe but very educational on the foods you're adding and why you're adding them.

Couple things: your extreme wide angle makes your bodies look obese. Not a good look; stir fry is done quickly at high heat and you’re cooking slow. Spend a minute in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant; you’re using way too many ingredients to preserve each one’s unique flavor; a dietician is not a nutritionist; loose long hair is a no-no in a kitchen, tie it back or wear hair nets; fiber is the last concern and just comes along when eating fresh. And what’s with the constant poking of the food? I will not come back for this and think Yeung Man Cooking offers better kitchen and cooking skills and advice. My advice, Dr. Mike: stick to what you know. I’ve been following since the pandemic hit and thank you for sharing what you learned in your profession. What I just witnessed I’d call campus cooking.
