Hey friends!! I don’t think I put it in the video, but when it comes to washing your herbs… I wait until a good rain to harvest, but if you are picking herbs and you don’t know how they have been grown.. give them a good wash! Also I misspoke about catmint and breastfeeding! It is safe 🙌
Hello, thank you for another great video! So just to clarify, catmint is just another name for a Catnip, right? It's the same plant, as they have same latin name? Thanks!
How do I clean, dry, and then dehydrate herbs? I just cut Holy Basil, washed with veg wash and water, rinsed, dried between paper towels on a cookie sheet and put in my OFF oven but with the light on. Now..... I use my dehydrator? Air dry outside? Help is appreciated. Thanks.
hopefully one day soon the cost of freeze dryers will be accessible to those of us who are living on a fixed income. Until then air drying is what I do.
My husband came from the mailbox while I was watching your video. He had a package. I thought it was seeds I ordered but he said it was his. Then he says the good news is that he got it for my birthday which is Saturday. The bad news is that it isn’t a freeze dryer. He knows how much I want one! I only mention it several times a day! He’s such a comedian…after 52 years he’s starting to rub a bit thin…..LOL! Don’t know what I’d do without him!❤❤❤
My last baby was incredibly colicky and when I tell you a catmint and chamomile tincture meant INSTANT relief for him, I mean it! That tincture (glycerine) was my lifeline.
I assume you know about activated charcoal in their bottle just a n1/8th of a tsp for an infant or a capsule content worth as they get bigger say 8 mo - a year a capsule & a half worth. a year up 2 caps worth for collic, diahrea, food poisoning, gas & cramps. Best stuff ever for all living things. Don't leave home without it..
I used a catnip & fennel glycerin tincture a lot for our daughter (middle child) when she was a baby. It would have been very helpful for our oldest as well but I didn't know about it when he was a baby.
cat-mint has purple flowers and smaller leaves, looks like you are harvesting cat-nip white flower and larger leaves and the plant stands more upright taller. both in the same family with same/similar medicinal properties, I have heard the catnip is a little stronger. people like the catmint for its pretty purple flowers. I noticed the catnip seed pods are super pointy and sharp, so I like to collect them or cut them off before they go to seed so they aren't on the ground for the dogs to have to run on or for me to walk on. I love to harvest the catnip, it is a good volunteer plant and all over the yard. I have seen cats fight over who gets to roll on the freshly mowed pile of catnip lol. love your garden space!!
I plant a bunch of catnip for my honey bees. Also to attract cats to the yard for pest control for my crops. I made a lot of fresh catnip tea last year. But I stopped making it once I seen the cats rolling around on it. 😂😂😂
Is catmint the same as catnip? Thank you for all the information! I look forward to investing in so.e of the books you and your mom have recommended. But for now I mix my simple teas of predominantly Peppermint, mint, lavender, and jasmine; as those are the herbs I have. 😁
I used to grow catnip, lemon balm, and chamomile and alternate throwing fresh herbs in my water bottle prior to leaving for work. I killed my plants one summer because I was out of town. When I finally grew catmint again, two years later, it always made me extremely sleepy. I can't drink it the way I did for years.
That's probably because you mixed up catmint and catnip. They are similar but not the same. In this video she is picking catNIP and calling it catmint. Even she, who does this all the time doesn't get it straight.
Catmint is so fun because you get the "look" of lavender but longer blooming & not as fussy. I've tried to grow lavender a handful of times and it just doesn't like the way I do my soil, apparently. lol.
My catnip tincture (vodka) from last summer got turned into a bug spray this spring. It worked well on the gnats. I need to make a glycerin tincture for the kids.
I got an A3 paper guillotine with the finger gaurd that comes down Next to the blade for safety from an office supply store to chop all my herbs like catmint etc up. The guard comes down and holds the plant in place (As it would with paper) and I slice up my herbs with it... it's a game changer and so easy to clean 😊
As always, another informative video and I love that it's on catmint! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise in the kindest, most sincere way. You are a gem and I learn so much from watching your homestead grow.
I had catmint come up in my garden. I didn't plant it. But, I am sure as heck nurturing it and harvesting it. It has been such an amazing addition to my teas. I have anxiety and its been amazing to help my sleep.
more than likely it is catnip, not catmint. Google the difference and see if what you have is nip or mint. Cheers! I have a ton of the catnip in my garden, I never planted any of it, and it's taken over almost my whole garden.
@@gtiernan1 You are correct. I keep forgetting that they are different plants. I was taught when I was young that they were the same. It is catnip. It's really yummy but it is a bully. What I am doing is harvesting and using most of it, letting some go to seed to collect and I will start transferring it to a container. That way I can keep it in check. It is a mint relative after all. This garden area was my grandmother's and I am currently restoring it from the neglect the renters we had in the house did. (Long story) I'm fighting a lot of invasive weeds like Canadian thistle, creeping bell flowers, nightshade and such.
@@aloras405 oh, I hear ya. When I first discovered it growing in my garden, where I never planted anything like it, I thought it was spearmint! LOL - then I got educated and now, although, I love it, I have to thin it profusely as it takes over - everything!
Remember mints being grown around the houses when I was a kid ,as well as bordering property that has pest problems . Was told the house won't have bugs and the property wouldn't get snakes or mice by growing mint borders.
This is a timely video for me as I just rescued a root-bound catmint plant from a variety store day before yesterday! I’ve grown catnip (and other mints) for years but never catmint before now. I also just got a net herb drying rack for all the plants that are coming in so I can avoid using the dehydrator in this summer heat. You sure make a good argument for investing in a freeze dryer though!
Catnip is the plant that is widely used as a medical. Catmint is widely used more as an ornamental. I believe she's using catnip but a lot of folks use the names interchangeably
Mrs. Honeystead as a former trucker I know exactly how important sleep is to ones health Mam. Excellent video and love the mix of great information and humor Mrs. Honeystead thank ya for the knowledge Mam.
This is so wonderful.. everyone should all put our extra seeds in the garbage... tiny seeds in the sink like pepper seeds.. small..sink ones need to be checked before done we don't want to hurt the oceans . . Everything does end up back there anyway... we can all help mother nature!❤
When my first child was a baby, she was colicky and my pharmacist sold blackberry root tincture and I worked like a charm, stopped the colick immediately. thnx for sharing.
Thank you for the video! I’ve been growing catmint for years but only for my honeybees and my cat! Now I’m going to have to expand my garden so they can share with me!
We have had catmint growing in our garden for about 5 years. It comes back every year in the spring and we have hard freezes (zone 7). Catmint is also one of the first plants to come up in the spring, and the first plant we have that flowers for our bees. I have been splitting the plant in half and spreading it all over our yard and property because of the flowers. Thanks for educating me on what to do with it. I will definitely be harvesting some to make a glycerin tincture. I'm trying to learn more about glycerin way of preserving herbs. I have only made ones with vodka so far but would like to make more kid friendly tinctures. Love your videos and apothecary!
I have so much catnip that likes to come up in my flower garden every year it spread 😂. I didn't know it was so good for sleep and baby colic, now that my baby is 1, wish i knew sooner. Now i will go harvest some, and try making a tincture for friends with little babies 👶 Also tea for my family. God bless you all. Now im thinking of getting me some bee friends.
I often wonder how much of the oils the bees absorb from the nectar and pollen. 🤔Real food and variety seems to be key doesn't it,🤣who would have thought.😂Have a great evening Kaylee and family.😁
I would love to know what to do with my Toothache plant. I have a good size spot of it growing… now how do I use it, preserve it etc. I don’t have a freeze dryer, but would love one! Thanks for any help you can give.
Good Afternoon hello 👋🏾😎🆒🔜🆗🙌🏾💪🏾👉🏾🦻🏾🦻🏾😊👏🏾📲🆗👍🏾 how you doing your work and vegetables and fruits and flowers plants before the winter until the next spring ❤ ?
@TheHoneystead, you might want to ask Hoss about their affiliation with the former Montesano company (now Bayer). There's info spreading about this link and Hoss might be getting some backlash. I don't doubt the dealings you've had with them have been lovely and personal, but many people are strongly against everything that Montesano has done to the farming industry and America's land. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Your apothecary garden is AMAZING! I strive to have such a lovely herb garden; mine is rather haphazard, many of my herbs have been "planted" for me by birds... one of them, which is growing in abundance is catnip. That is the plant you are showing in this video, not catmint. Catmint is actually a much prettier plant with beautiful purple flowers. Cheers and thanks for sharing your apothecary. I am slowly building mine. Just harvested and dried a boatload of the catnip. I will get to my catmint next... Have a blessed day! PS - you can go to Rain Country's video channel and she has a catmint vs catnip video and explains the differences really well.
I have catmint in my house gardens but I wonder if the ornamental kind from the local nursery is different from the kind you planted? My flower parts on mine are much taller/longer/sparse
I love using cat mint. I’ve alway air dried or dehydrated. I’m interested in a small size freeze dryer. What size are you using? I’m guessing extra large based on the volume you do.
I made a dish using oregano flowers on sourdough flat bread with cherry tomatoes - so yummy! I store dried catnip flowers for cats, but am using leaves for tea. I need to harvest the rest of my toothache flowers. Is it ok to dehydrate older flowers that aren’t bright yellow anymore?
Since this is my first year I’m harvesting and freeze drying everything I can get my hands on. Putting in jars n vaccum sealing them. I haven’t started tinctures yet. Found some ginkgo growing in between lanes of road in residential area. Got a bunch of ashes real good n freeze dried. Don’t know what has been sprayed in it but it’s in the city limits so don’t think they do much in this small town. Question: I have plenty of narrow leaf plantain but hardly any broad leaf except in dog lot ( won’t use that!!). Which has more medicine.
I love your videos you give so much information and explain it so I can really understand it!❤When you say keep in a cool dark place so can you tell me coolest to hottest temperatures or an estimate of a good temp ? cause my basement temperature sometimes gets a little warm but not hot!
Is it ok to just strip the leaves when harvesting and leave the blossoms on the stim for the pollinators? My catmint is in full bloom and i would love to leave them on if thats ok? ;) if not can you add dried blossoms to your tea? Thank you ❤
Is catnip Nepeta cataria or is it Would like to catmint? Have read several articles that state catnip is Nepeta cataria. Would like to grow some but there seems to be some confusion on the spices Have seen catmint referred to as nepeta faasseni or mussinii and catnip always as nepeta cataria, flowers are also different. Thanks for clearing this up for me
QUESTION: what has more medicine catmint leaves or flowers?. My mother wort and marsh mallow finally growing well. Yah peppermint rosemary oregano not so much. I have them in cloth grow bags n nothing in those bags growing well. Germination was terrible. I will not use them again.
Too bad I don't live closer to you or I'd come over and help you harvest your yard. lol It looks lovely! I was wondering when you and your mom plan on having another workshop for budding herbalists?
I have a question about the teas. For instance, the heart and blood tea that you made, how much should you use for a cup of tea? I have the same kettle that you have and I love it!
