Respect. I understand totally. I’ve met others that have the same experiences. This is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about compensation when it comes to to pipeline work. Family make huge sacrifices when doing this type of work. I respect you for doing what is best for you and your family. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, I'm Nick. 35. Future welder helper here. I got offered a job on a pipeline after I finish my welding courses, which classes start later this month. I have 2 years high school experience back in the day. Anyways, just stopping by to say Hi and watching videos on tips for welder helpers

How long do you think someone should be a helper before they break out on their own?
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 6 лет назад
Ironman 99 Just depends on an individuals situation. Everybody learns a lil dif. I’d say 4-8 years depending on welding experience and ambition.
@Ironman-el5lr

Thanks for the response. I'm already welding pipe in the power plant and petrochemical industry. Would you advise me becoming a helper before I make the jump to pipeline?
@ianswartz2741
@ianswartz2741 6 лет назад
I guess acing the 'g' weld tests would be a good start
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 6 лет назад
definitely wouldn't hurt you at all. it would get your network started in the pipeline field. but if you get the opportunity to take a test on a pipeline and you felt like it was a good option at the time you could do that also.

Hey Austin, have you done any hot cuts? How do you feel about doing them? Any scares?
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 6 лет назад
Carter 86 I have never done any actual live tie ins. But know several people who have. It is very good work to know how to do because it will be there when new construction slows down. But i would def recommend trusting the people and company you are working for when doing this type of work. From what I’ve heard its not too bad scary wise but in just a fast second anything could go wrong. Not worth the higher risk, and from what I’ve heard doesn’t even pay any better than new construction, but can be more steady work. Long term.
@carter4run
@carter4run 6 лет назад
Austin Ross I have worked in a new compressor station for almost 4yrs now and have just watched like 3 hot cuts and since watching you I haven’t seen any of those but have seen you do ROW work. I think as long as it’s 100% natural gas on the inside of the line and no O2 gets inside then the hot cut goes as planned. I am on the automation/electrical side of these compressor stations but learning about pipeline work and the gas business is all new to me and very interesting. Thanks for the reply!

Do you have any advice for someone who has never welded before and wants to become a welder but doesn't have the funds for school?
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 6 лет назад
Scooter Dex I would say try finding some kind of construction job that might involve some welding from time to time. Putting up metal buildings. Pipe fence. A shop job that involves welding. Just surround yourself with potential opportunities to weld.

If you want something bad enough then you will find a way to get the $$$$ you need. Make your lunch instead of buying it, same goes for all those take away coffee and food.

yes it does. i struggled with getting into pipeline work myself. before i ever pipelined i worked at a shop for 3 years running a mig gun. then worked on driving rigs for several months. worked for myself for a bit. slowly but surely one thing led to another. it takes a lot of drive and determination. submerging yourself into the general type of work, networking, asking questions. hustle, all this is what it takes to get in without an in.
