The CROWS (Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station) is a weapon system developed by Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace in Norway. It is designed to allow soldiers to remotely operate a variety of weapons from inside a protected vehicle or structure.
The latest version of the CROWS system, known as the M153 CROWS II, has several improvements over earlier versions, including better optics, increased accuracy, and improved durability. It can be mounted on a variety of vehicles, including the Humvee and MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles).

Was a CROWS gunner in Afghanistan. I LOVED that machine cause it got me out of the turret and into an armored and air conditioned vehicle. The contractors that worked on them for us always gave me spare parts to keep my company rolling.

Wow! I am an UAV / autonomous spacecraft avionics engineer, and like love this type of tech. For future upgrade if I was on the CROW dev program I would add VR headset for the gunner in the vehicle and sound sensors outside of vehicle for him to pick up additional sounds and awareness. But will keep the LED screen for back up if VR headset fails and for gunner preference.

$190K is dirt cheap as far as a weapons system like this goes. Imagine how many insurance payouts for wounded or killed Vs how many vehicles see a gunner get wounded or killed. Now take into account effective increase of thermal and optics and computer assisted aiming plus additional moral to the unite attached to the vehicle. You’re probably saving $50K plus with every single one of these weapons.

In every war ever fought, the most difficult to replace piece of equipment is: The Trained Soldier. Keeping soldiers safe keeps the fighting going. It's easy to claim that the CROWS system is expensive, but what's the comparison to the cost of training a soldier? That cost must also include the time between being born and enlisting in the armed forces.

Never used the CROW. But there is somethings that technology can't replace. Again I'm not against or for it. Just my opinion from my experience as a gunner.

excuse me? im very well used to fps games, never played once with a mouse,they chose joysticks for a reason, guess what? pcs being better doesn't mean everyone has one,in fact it means the exact opposite, the better something is the more expensive, many gamers are under18 and have little money, or their parents buy it for them, know what that means? more people are used to joysticks and little buttons, vs a computer kbam setup which is entirely irrelevant to what kind of game someone plays. i honestly can't figure out where your minds at with this, and idk if i want to.

@imtoooldforthisstuff
@imtoooldforthisstuff Год назад
A couple of bad things about the CROWS: The feed belt tend to gum up, and a round or frag to it will require an exposed soldier to sort it out. Second, with a manned hatch the gunner can move their head faster than the turret can traverse. The gunner can be looking one way with his gun still trained in the direction of the activity. The gunner also often can direct fire from his advantage. I can see it being of great use in a dense urban area, with multiple units deployed. But nothing can replace the usefulness of a live eye on the gun.

Probably a very rare issue. Looks very efficient in the videos. They're mobile, can drive away or seek temporary cover to have someone fix it. Wouldn't take long. What would help is to have a pop-up solid shield for the top of the vehicle for someone to get out and get up there while behind decent cover. Perhaps switch-triggered by the gunner, for instance.

They need a helmet mounted optic the soldier can wear to move something like this. Give them an old Nintendo power glove and send them out on firewatch. They can engage with their carried weapon. Or engage with a turret to deal with an airborne threat. Granted the turret can deal with the ground namely in an outnumbered situation, probably a bit overkill to use against ground. Not a phalanx but a huge cannon like found on the AC130. An explosive bullet to prevent casualties like the phalanx but a little leaner on rpm. Modern flak cannon.

I’m not an engineer, but I got an idea how to make this thing even more deadly. What if you had one turret on top of another turret each turret acting independently. The top turret would have the 50 Cal or the M-60 , the bottom turret just below acting independently would have, the grenade launcher. For this, you might need two operators, one utilizing the grenade launcher, and the other one utilizing the large caliber weapon that would be interesting. If I’m not mistaken, Russia might have something similar. I believe they call it the Terminator but I don’t know if it has independent turrets. But supposedly, and this is a big supposedly because Russia tends to lie a lot and we’ve noticed that about their weapons true specifications, but they claim that it has three weapon systems that act independently and can target three different targets at the same time.
@MrDDiRusso
@MrDDiRusso Год назад
Stacking two turrets is less effective than you might think. It adds extra complexity, cost, weight and height to the system. If you need two guns on a turret, they mount them side by side. As you suggested, two turrets might require two operators which is not ideal. The more complex a system, the more that can go wrong. Something like this existed on the M60A1 tank and the commanders cupola was not popular with crews.
