Alan Steinheimer and I had an opportunity to check out the Orbiter while it was in Burbank for a two week window. It was good to get some hands-on time with it. It would have been nice to compare it with other units, but that will have to happen another time.

I'm surprised it's only 500Watts, maybe Arri has more powerful LEDs lined up to replace jokers and M18s.
@vontd9
@vontd9 4 года назад
@@Photographicelements Unlikely anytime soon. Very large COB LEDs generate an incredible amount of heat and the size of the heatsink and fan to cool an LED outputting M18 level intensity would make it incredibly unpractical. The material used in an HMI where the immediate heat is generated has a very high melting point, whereas an LED chip can start to melt and shift color temperature at much lower temperatures.

Kyle Van Tonder Thanks for the explanation! Heat management technology is changing very fast & has been the impetus for higher output LEDs as well as small 6k cameras. Aputure’s new 600Watt LED uses new thermal management materials & is the same size as their 300d, from several years ago. I was hoping Arri would be able to use a similar or better materials/ technology, but may have to wait..

I could see this as a hard backlight, bounce, or ellipsoidal replacement- a Swiss army light combining a few different beam types. I see a place for this in dramatic work for sure. There are not so many options for hard light with full color and complex control options. If you are running effects gags with the other lights, you’ll want a hard light that can do the same tricks.
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 4 года назад
I agree. It’s a versatile light and will be especially effective for dramatic work. Larger rental houses will want to have this tool on the shelf. The trick is for us smaller, owner operators who maybe don’t do a lot of dramatic work or even that much work with color and effects. It’s a harder choice to make given the price point and what our clients will be willing to pay. I’ll be getting one regardless and maybe it will become like the Skypanel where it just makes my set life so much easier that I’ll get a second... and maybe I’ll use it all the time and figure out a way to ease it into people’s budgets:)

Really interesting light. We're on the short list for January and hoovering up any info we can get on this light. For run and gun production this looks promising. But there's much to want, especially if the light would just take an existing etc. source 4 barrel system, what we get in terms of lens systems - and wish we could get more time seeing how much punch the light really has :).
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 4 года назад
Agreed. We all want something to replace our workhorse HMI’s so that we can close the door on non-dim, not CCT tunable, even non-RGB units. I don’t think we are quite there yet...
@timofreee
@timofreee 4 года назад
Cheers for creating good content from a gaffer O&O perspective. I also agree with your point, what will this replace in our arsenal? The whole LED movement is supposed to simplify and lower costs, but it seems like it’s going the opposite direction at times. I have mixed feelings about the orbiter, the amount of accessories and the specs seems like a good thing on paper, but in reality, it could just be expensive baggage on set.
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 4 года назад
And like some units, it may not replace and just become a new tool that does it hinge an HMI can’t do: dim, CCT tune, RGB, and effects. The kicker is the price and the accessories. I think it will find a niche, but it may be on jobs with deeper budgets...

Thanks for this Luke! The menu system still seems a bit clunky. I'd prefer something like the gemini with 3 rotary dials tied to the most commonly used functions. Instead there is a lot of clicking in and out of menus with the orbiter. Probably not so bad once you get used to it, but I think it could be better. I also wonder why the unit had to be so big and heavy when a nanlite forza 500 is 500 watts and about 1/5th the weight. The hive 575c is also much lighter and compact than this. You can also see the colour fringing on the projection attachment. Given the prices arri is likely to charge for that attachment I was hoping for perfection. The dedolight optics are probably superior value for money. And what was happening to the beam when you defocused the projection? That looked very funky. I was originally excited, but now I'm not so sure.

One reason the housing is larger is to allow for weatherproofing. Also, the control and power supply are all in the head. It’s hard when you design a fixture to please every type of industry... it’s just as easy to disappoint them all.

The controls seemed opposite the SkyPanel plus I kept thinking it was a touch screen like Stellar because it looks like Stellar. After 15-20 minutes of fooling around I was getting used to the new arrangement and I am not super tech-savvy. The bigger issue is where does it fit in? Sorta feels like a new category light and I already have a lot of choices. Felt a little more specialized... I think Skypanels will continue to rule the roost for a bit.

The capabilities of this unit are definitely interesting but I'm doing mostly corporate and Commercial work. Seems like this would be big and complicated as opposed to a Joker. I don't think I've ever been a situation where a client asked me to put a colored gel on a Joker other than CTO or CTB. For me, as a director/shooter, this is way out of my range....but I’m hoping that Litepanels will come out with their version of this. I rented Skypanels then eventually bought a couple Gemini 2x1’s because I could afford those and I liked the lower weight. The Orbiter does look awesome but for the price it would have been nice if it was a bit lighter, smaller, and had more output.

Luke Seerveld yeah I was thinking of Aputure as well. What’s the advantage to having fixed lenses in the first place? Higher optical quality?
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 4 года назад
I think using the open lens, cone type approach, similar to their M series HMI’s that don’t require lenses, gives you more output. The Fresnel takes away substantial output in exchange for the potential of variable focus, if the lens or light source can be moved.

Hmmmm initially I was ecstatic about this light. The more I learn about it the less enthusiast i am. Especially when SSI ratings are coming into play. Most rgb lights just fall apart as soon as you drift from white. Honestly it's why my theory on led has been and still is 5600k balanced light period and gel it if I have to. At only 400wish output, which puts it in the aputure 300d ii range it looks less impressive. It's big and clunky, whereas the aputure is light and nimble. I've found I've drifted more and more towards just using aputure lights on set, despite having access to sky panels, geminis, etc. Maybe it's just me. I'm eager to get my hands on one of these units and get some numbers and readings.
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 4 года назад
Yes, it very much depends what units you surround yourself with already and what type of projects you get called on to light. I have enough jobs that call for color manipulation that having quickly tunable lighting is a big plus. The days of color correcting gel are mostly gone for me. That may not be true for others. I would say that our futzing with the controls may have looked clunky, but that interface will be easy to learn... it’s just deep and visual. Yes, you get fooled into thinking it’s touch screen, but I’m glad it’s not. Tactile buttons and knobs are so much better in a real world environment.
@MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 4 года назад
Luke Seerveld Have you come across any color rendition issues with tunable RGBs. I saw a demo (check Indy Mogul) where orange captured as red, although the color looked normal to the naked eye. The fix? Using a yellow gel instead of tuning in an electronic yellow gel.
@davinciproductions2533
@davinciproductions2533 4 года назад
No doubt it’s a game changer as far as capability is concerned but the price is out of control based on the output. The full kit is supposed to come in around $15k. I know not everyone needs every optic and I’ve heard from Arri at NY NAB last week that the light and one optic will be about $8500, but still, we’re talking about a 400 watt HMI equivalent. If this were an 800 watt equivalent I could see it and I think it would sell. But at 400 everyone will be thinking the same thing...”it’s very cool and I like it and want it but damn, it’s only a 400 watt equivalent which really isn’t enough in most cases. Guess I’ll figure something else out that will be cheaper anyway”.

@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 4 года назад
Hard to know. Marketing pushes us to believe what we want to believe. I would wait to see it in the wild in real comparison tests. If it was able to replace joleekos and was hard cuttable or could receive a focusable fresnel rather than fixed tubes or really had the throw of an M8 or J8 I would be all over it due to its added capabilities of remote dimming, full color, and effects... but although I see the promise of the design, I’m not convinced this is the magical tool we would like it to be. There is value being first to market with new units, but there are also drawbacks. That said, a lot of people, including me, were skeptical before the Skypanel came out... then we all had to have a few! The main difference in this case is that the Skypanel actually had more output than most of the other units out there if you added the whole RGB capability, which most of us weren’t even looking for. That unit pulled everyone into RGB land and impressed with its output. At the moment I don’t see the Orbiter being that kind of a game changer, but it will definitely be the talk of the town for a while:) Follow your heart, but keep your mind clear... your wallet will thank you.

When I saw this I thought 'oh, Arri are trying get onto the COB market'. If however you work in the (price) market of the Aputure or Nanlite Forza range then this is waaaaaaay to expensive and thus not in your price bracket. The issue is though, that if you're high end then this light just is never going to be needed. Arri are and will always be a 'high end ticket' company, which is fine. However this product is caught between a rock and a hard place.
