A quick First Look at the Aladdin Mosaic 4'x4' Full Color Flex Mat. There was also an opportunity to use a 50 cm #4 Cine Reflector for an edge light. No big wow factor, just another set up using the tools available😀

I am curious if you thought about just using a CRLS #1 reflector without the Orion. The more mirror like reflectors are really good at redirecting a soft key light to use as a hairlight. Also possibly you could have used the light coming in from the window to direct the edge light a bit more without needing another light. Although I do hear you saying 'holding with the window' and 'wasn't enough'. So likely maybe the reflector on its own wouldn't be enough. But for future gigs, one of the aspects of the #1 and #2 reflectors is that they are good for reflecting soft light! :)

Thank you for the note! I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I’m still wrapping my head around the concept of using a small reflector to create a larger source, which makes sense when you combine a source with larger diffusion, but seems counterintuitive when you start with a small reflector and use no diffusion.

What do you mean by blackout at 1:11 ? Is the CRLS used as an edge light, a hair light, or both? Thanks!

Yup, that’s confusing! The first reference to Blackout refers to Blackout Lighting Console, which is an iPad app that can be used to remotely control your lights. I was really using the Cine reflector as an edge light. See what happens when you try to squeeze in an episode before the interviewee shows up?😬

@@meetthegaffer I was just confused because I never used the app before. This is a nice, simple setup. Keep them coming!

@@meetthegaffer I've got it. Love it. It's great for interviews, and car details. used it on a Landrover shoot. comes in a nice case (similar to astera titan case) and is fast to assemble and disassemble. Also and this is well thought out, it is repairable by the end user or service. The light have is divided in metal sections about 2 by 4 ish which can be replaced if they fail, and can be bought.

Thank you for the notes! Having a large, soft, easy to assemble, easy to repair unit that provides full color output is a wonderful tool.

Did you manage to get it working in blackout? because I didn't.

I have not yet tried. I have had some difficulty communicating with Aladdin about receiving profiles in order to create a custom profile. My Korean sucks🤪
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer Год назад
OK, try using the same profile as the Aladdin All-In 1,2 Color RGB 8-bit. According to the Protocol Map on the Aladdin site the Mosaic profile is identical. And that profile on Blackout has just been updated to use all five channels, so be sure to sync the database first. I’m trying to get more clarity from Aladdin on whether there are other Protocol Maps for the different Modes, because there is no crossfade or effects or gels in that simple 5 channel profile. Every manufacturer does it differently, but I wish they would all adhere to a logical methodology so the software developers could easily input new profiles for us to use instead of gaffers having to create custom profiles that may or may not work. 😖
